We went in for him twice. One time our board cocked it up the other Batistuta turned us down.
That's my point all along. While its unfair to compare United to Real (we do try to produce kids), its also true that in we had our own set of galacticos (in terms of our domain). God Knows what SAF would have brought if he had a bigger budget (salary and fees). Would he have settled for Mickey if he could get Maldini, or Ince if he could get to Rijkaard? God knows.
We may have been on paper the richest club in the world* but our salaries never reflected that. We always paid less then Real/Barca and there were times when even teams like Fiorentina could pay more then we do. Its all a matter of salaries. Being a neutral would you prefer to work for Microsoft for 2 grand a week or would you prefer to work in a corner coffee shop for 10 grand a week?
* In football being the richest club is pretty subjective. How do you quantify richness? If United produce 30m profit and Rochdale United has an owner who can afford pumping 200m per year for 1000 yrs then whose the richest out of the two? That's why certain clubs keep on outbidding us despite producing less profit then we do.

Don't know if anyone cares but Hamsik hada great game on Sunday, best perfromance for 6 months. Still looks out of place on the Right wing though.
Latest rumour, Zenit St Petersberg, have offered €30m for Hamsik, and are willing to pay him €6million a year net.
Wouldn't be a good career move for the lad, we have a gaping, Hamsik shaped hole in our squad but it looks like we're going to continue on as if our central midfield is good enough to realise our ambitions.
After his great performance the other week, Hamsik had another up and down game, scored a cracking 25 yarder, but missed a sure fire header, and practically gifted the opposition a goal.
That was some of the worst defending I've ever seen. It actually made me laugh out loud.

Became inconsistent in the last few months due to an injury then playing in a different position. Before that he had a brilliant 3 seasons.
