Marek Hamsik

I don't really have that much to add to the topic, other than everytime I've literally watched Hamsik, I have been left disappointed.

To his defence, I've not watched him that much in Serie A (+-8 matches in Serie A) and there are tons of players who perform much better for club over country.

On topic of other midfielders out there (available midfielders no doubt), from the few that I do watch as much as I can, and who might be available my pick would probably not be De Rossi either.

- Schweinsteiger would be my muppet fantasy
- Banega looks the talent
- I think Javi Martinez might actually be more suited to the player we currently need in midfield as he will add some steel, plus great technical/passing ability
- Modric would improve us
(don't watch too much of the French League, but they have 1 or 2 CM's to keep an eye on as well)

He would be a good fit but he is going to sign a new contract and Levy would not want to sell unless we pay some ridiculous amount. Didn't Chelsea offer £40m and get rejected? That is already too much for him.

Yeah, absolutely agree with you, he will be overpriced - maybe the 2012 off season he might be a little cheaper, but I doubt by that much. I was just listing some personal alternatives to the De Rossi/Hamsik debate which was happening in the thread though.

Schweinsteiger would IMO be unattainable, but I do rate Banega and especially Martinez as young players, who would be a better fit then Hamsik/De Rossi. This is all IMO of course.

Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Slovakian international midfielder Marek Hamsik.

The 24-year-old has also been linked with local rivals City in recent weeks, with manager Roberto Mancini admitting he was interested in the talented Napoli playmaker.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson has held a long-standing interest in the player, reportedly rated at £35 million, and Manchester United have been handed some positive news if they wish to pursue a signature at the end of the season.

"Anything can happen in football - but these deals are only going to be activated at the end of the season," talkSPORT reported agent Mino Raiola has said.

The Red Devils were heavily linked with moves for attacking midfielders in the transfer window, with Wesley Sneijder and Mario Gotze thought to be on the agenda for the Manchester United manager.
However, the emergence of Tom Cleverley has made the need for a signature less severe, with many predicting Manchester United would fall short in the position this summer after the retirement of Paul Scholes.

Whilst that has not been the case, Ferguson could still be keen to strengthen in the area next summer, and Hamsik has now emerged as a legitimate target if Manchester United are happy to go head-to-head with their big-spending neighbours.
Still ongoing.

Cracking article.

City have expressed an interest in Hamsik. The agent is quoted as saying that anything can happen, but no deal will be concluded until the summer. MAJOR BOOST IN UNITED'S PURSUIT OF THE £35M RATED SLOVAKIAN PLAYMAKER.

Wut?

Of the 2 articles I picked the other was even more spurious.

Still at it ehh Gambit ? :)
Absolutely. His agent has said he's in a prison at Napoli, albeit a golden one.
Gambs, this calls for your "candle burning" picture

Calciomercato says we sent our scouts to watch the Udinese Napoli game this week. There were a fair few players they were checking out but the priorities were Hamsik and Mehdi Benatia according to them and julienews.

Marek Hamsik set to sign new Napoli contract on Monday
The president of the San Paolo outfit has revealed that the 24-year-old midfielder will pen an improved deal this week, and that he anticipates an exciting match against Juventus

Marek Hamsik is set to rubber-stamp a contract extension with Napoli, president Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed.

The Slovakia international has been a mainstay of the San Paolo side's midfield since joining the club from Brescia in 2007.Speaking ahead of Napoli's Serie A clash against Juventus, De Laurentiis called on Hamsik to show his true colours as the club are about to offer him a new contract.

"If Hamsik wakes up and proves his worth [against Juventus], because he has been a bit off in the last few weeks, it would be a splendid introduction to the appointment we have on Monday regarding a contract extension," he told Corriere dello Sport.

The Napoli supremo went on to comment on Sunday's match, which will be crucial for his side's Scudetto chances as they sit five points off the top of the table.

"I am convinced it will be a very good game, as they have been in the last few years," De Laurentiis said.

"All the necessary ingredients are gathered, but we must discover the advantages Juventus get from not playing in midweek, and how much strain Wednesday's match [against Bayern Munich] has put on my players."

:(

Didn't he recently sign a contract that will keep him there until 2014 or something like that?

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

Sorry gambit.

Yup but thats coming up to the 2year mark so they're making sure he's signed up instead of losing him on the cheap.
Gerrard signs a long term contract nearly every year
and he never played for any other club.
Sorry gambit.

No, in a way this is better. This wayi can keep on harping on about him here in the transfer forum.

I swear this was posted before, anyways one of the Napoli players ran into the box before Hamsik kicked the ball, but you could see on the top a Juve player also entered the box before the kick was taken.

Why does this matter again? He scored anyway. If that had hindered him in anyway then I can understand.

It was a Napoli player, so I guess the argument that it could be distracting for the 'keeper. Presumably if only an opposition player had run in and Hamsik had scored, it wouldn't have to be retaken.

It's more about the Napoli player having an advantage if Hamsik shot was saved, the Napoli player would have a better shot to score, since he was in the box before Hamsik scored.

Its pretty stupid, similar to how goalkeepers are penalized for moving from their line.
Both calls are stupid, because they are not called all the time.

And it's a penalty. The taker should have the advantage. Don't see how hard it is not to run inside the box so long as the taker doesn't stutter in his run-up. Stupid footballers. Can't keep still outside box, can't keep still when in a wall. It's only stupidity that's the cause of it.

He's about to sign another new contract.

Has anyone else noticed the pattern of players never mentioning us when they list the clubs they would be 'open' to joining?

It's definitey not because they wouldn't want to join us or that we are not an attractive prospect. It's surely more an indicator that we don't even seem like we could/would make any of these transfers happen in the eyes of the players. As though, due to our debt, we are nt even in the race...

:lol::wenger::confused:

Or it could be, as we've always done, we just assume everyone in the world loves us and can't imagine why a player wouldn't go to us so we make excuses why he shouldn't.

The Barca and Real favoritism is obvious at this point - both playing wonderful football with wonderful players, depth, and continental history. The Chelsea one is odd but you see them popping up as favorites recently (the Belgium boy comes to mind). These younger players grew up watching a dominate Chelsea squad so we have to face facts that Chelsea is a team players would choose. London is a far better picture for sore eyes than our lovely Manchester to be fair. And Chelsea have a new exciting, young manager with an owner who's willing to spend to rebuild.

We just have to accept that history doesn't matter to people outside of our the UK and Ireland. Maybe a player sees Fergie as on his retirement bed in a few seasons, our decline in squad strength, and the dire football we're playing and think Chelsea a better place.

Not saying any of that is true but for a player, they're bound to consider a few of those thoughts.

I agree with you in everything that you've said, except the part about people growing up seeing Chelsea successful... they hardly had decades of success, IMO the London factor and the wages are the main reasons why someone might favour Chelsea over us, and rarely because players watched them being a success when they were young (as opposed to watching us being successful).

Other than that I think you're spot on though, especially the first line!
