Marcus Rashford vs Anthony Martial (2017 / 2018 Season)

Depends upon which team you are playing. Against the likes of liverpool city bayern barcelona even madrid it will not work. Against the minnows who sit deep it might.

Oh yeah I know, but most of the time we play minnows so it would be good to have a system which works well against them.

James Milner has played every position on the pitch and done okay but you don’t think martial can switch wings?

Are James Milner and Martial the same player? Do they rely on the same things to be effective? We all know Martial's game is largely based off cutting inside. Somehow, Martial fan boys want to deny it now.

You’re completely ignorant of his other qualities. He’s an excellent Pacey dribbler, and could easily adapt to taking people on on the outside, aswell as working on his left foot to become even more unpredictable. It’s nothinh to do with being fanboys, people just understand attributes better than you.

Yeah, he is a good dribbler. Are people prepared for Martial to play on the outside and largely play the crossing game? Largely taking away his ability to cut inside?

The reason Mourinho wont do this, is because it's a stupid idea.

Hilarious that IM the one that doesn't understand attributes . People also have a better understanding of attributes than Mourinho does as well .

Martial on the right to remove a large part of his game, make him less of a goal threat, on the same side as Valencia who owns that side by himself?

No thanks, inverted forward on the left or a striker with a partner.

Martial as a right winger is one of the stranger things ive read on here. Maybe we should put Lukaku on the left wing as well?

Martial is so amazing we can play him anywhere and win.

A loss vs Huddersfield and draws vs Stoke and Liverpool is not winning. Unless we're conceding the title to City, winning is the only satisfactory result. I think Mourinho should utilize our quality in defense, which isn't the FB position, and our quality in attack, which isn't Mhki, Mata, and Lingard.

Mourinho has mentioned that Martial is better between the lines. So stick with a 3-4-1-2, with Martial in the hole behind Lukaku and Rashford, at least until there are enough healthy midfielders and quality FBs to play a 4-3-1-2 in EPL matches.

He has more to his game. Sure posters also will think can sane play on the left being left footed until he has been played there .

Its not even that. Martial has shown very good performances on the left and in the middle with a partner.

Jardim, Van Gaal and Mourinho have all played him in one of these ways for the overwhelming majority of his career. All 3 of these managers are quite tactically aware and accomplished. Its probably the case that Martial himself doesnt want to play on the right either, since he has played so little there.

Rashford on the right makes more sense, since he has a kick and run style of play. He also has a very direct delivery, he whips the ball in or smashes it along the ground, none of that floaty stuff. Even then Rashford hasnt shown anything special on the right, his best has always been as a striker.

I agree Rashford on the right makes a lot more sense.

You absolute loon.

You've already said that wasn't an option because Martial wouldn't be as good as Rashford on the left so Jose would be forced to take Martial off and put Rashfords back to the left. Now you're ok with Rashford on the right?

How about this? Let's clone Rashford so we can play him on both sides. The sell Martial so you don't have to worry about one of him getting dropped. Problem solved ;)

Martial is a professional fecking footballer. Some of you are implying he turns to jelly when he even approaches the right side of the pitch. What an utterly baffling line of reasoning. Of course he could play there. Would rather see Rashford though. Point is both should be starting with Lukaku and if you can't see that through your condescending posts @haram then there's no point engaging you.

I said Rashford on the right makes more sense than Martial on the right mate. I did not say that's what we should actually do. Why has Mourinho not already played one on each side? There are reasons. People dont seem to get that. They think Mourinho is doing all of this for banter.

Do you guys not get that playing Martial on the right makes him significantly less effective?! Of course you could stick him out there, but then if he can't do what he's actually good at whats the fecking point? Do you want Martial going on the outside trying to cross it more often than not or cutting inside? How is this even controversial???

Putting him on the right is just playing him for the sake of it. It's a terrible idea.

You know what?! Lets just start every game like this.

Lukaku - Ibra
Rashford - Pogba - Matic - Martial

Perfect! Get all the forwards on for the sake of it!

Your argument is just so damned simplistic. It's as though Martial's entire game is dependent on cutting inside, and therefore by having him on the right, he'd be rendered useless. Martial goes inside and out regularly when on the left, it's why he's such a nightmare to mark at his best.

Everything is in absolutes with you, it's why it's so hard to agree with you. I do agree he'd be somewhat less lethal on the right, but it wouldn't be by much. He'd terrorise defenders going on the outside and deliver more crosses. He'd probably score less and assist more. Anyway, Rashford on the right and Martial on the left looks better than Rashford on the left, Mata on the right and Martial on the bench.

Well, I'd rather see Martial on the left and Rashford on the right. I even have reservations about this, however I cant be bothered to go into it now anyway.

Having Martial on the right is a waste of time IMO, especially when he has flaws on the left already. Making him even less effective is crazy to me.

Martial would probably not be great on the right but you never know. Never liked him there though. I'd play him on the left and shift Rashford to the right. The guy claiming we should not 'negatively affect Rashford' is hilarious, as if we're moving Messi to the position he doesn't prefer.

Either way I think both players are better than our other options and I'd figure out a way to play them together. They're not incompatible or this big problem as suggested.

I’m sure you’re not being condescending on purpose but I’d suggest taking a break from posting until you can share an opinion in a less annoying fashion

No, I probably am doing it on purpose a little. If people are going to call me a 'loon', I think they deserve a little back.

He's always a bit anal about this topic. Ironic given the 'dick' comment he aimed at the other poster.

Completely baffling that people dont see why Martial on the right would be a problem. You guys really are something else. This has nothing to do with what is best for the team. You guys just want Martial on the pitch. Martial FC indeed.

So you have an issue being a fan of a player on their own team?

Have to agree with @haram here. Martial on the right is a total non starter, I don't even see how its much of a debate. He's a fantastic player but once you do that you limit his skill set considerably. Jose's aim is for the team to win rather than getting Martial 90mins every week. Personally I'd have Martial as a starter but its not that clear cut between him and Rashford atm. Martial started 2 of the 3 league games we've dropped points in this season.

There's also been this impatience for some to have both on the field together. As Jose says, Mata plays a very important role in our team with circulation of the ball and opening up in pockets, its a key part of the way we play. Mkhi has been in rotten form but he also has a specific role in our team and the truth is neither Marcus or Martial can do these roles. They are either left forwards in the 4231 or strikers in the 352. In addition to that they are both young 19 and 21 and still learning the game. In due time they will be ready but its clear both are showing an improvement in their games from last season to this season.

No, I have an issue when people put a player over the good of the team.

People saying that playing Martial on the right would be for the good of the team is laughable. These people just want him on the pitch, regardless of whether it would be right for the team or not.

I agree. There's a bigger picture we need to look at.

I think anyone with a brain and eyes would see Martial left and Rashford right as the best option. However since a certain poster was adamant that Rashford had to be on the left and Martial therefore had to be on the bench, we discussed whether Martial could improve the team from the right. I have little doubt he'd do a better job than our current right wing options and I think that the suggestion that he couldn't play there is idiotic. But yes, to avoid any confusion for those not reading all the posts Martial on the left and Rashford on the right is the preferred option.

Are James Milner and Martial the same player? Do they rely on the same things to be effective? We all know Martial's game is largely based off cutting inside. Somehow, Martial fan boys want to deny it now.

Why do you think when playing on the left he cuts inside a lot? Can you think of any possible reason why he prefers going to his right rather than his left?

Yes we may see Rashford on the right, my point is that he is most effective on the left and we shouldn't affect his game by moving him, just to start Martial who will have repeat performances of the Huddersfield one in similar game contexts.

You are the most biased self righteous member I have ever met on a forum in my life who accuses people of what he is so blatantly guilty of.

I have been steering clear of your part for a while now but that emboldened part was just too much to ignore.

When rashford had back to back shitty games against everton and Southampton did you see anyone come in here and use that as a justification of why he should not start as he would surely repeat those piss-poor performances in "similar game contexts"?

That's the exact reason I stopped replying him.

I noticed whenever Martial has an average or bad game, he goes on a rampage on the Martial thread making thousands of posts demeaning the player to prove his silly points and feel better.

I can't ever take someone so stupid seriously. Best to ignore him.

The funny thing is after a few pages of pretty hilarious shit slinging we seem to be agreed that if we were to play both in a front three the best bet would be: Martial - Lukaku - Rashford

I also like the sound of Martial in the hole behind Lukaku or with him in a 3-5-2.

As to the question of playing both v maintaining Jose's plan of having them share the left I'm comfortable with the latter for now, allowing us to own the left hand side for 90 minutes. The combination of Rashford for 65/70 and Martial for 20+ has worked for us several times this season, including this weekend in a big game. However it's clear these two could be great attackers for us for years to come, so Jose will need to start coming up with a way of including both in a starting line-up.

I would not be content with the current state of play forever, and nor I imagine would the two players in question, but Jose will surely have discussed with them how highly he rates them and, I suspect, his plans for how to utilise them in future. I don't see the 70/20 on the left being a long-term solution but nor am I desperate to see both these lads start. It's working for now, the players are developing nicely, why rush into a change?

I tried, I really did but that comment was so blatantly self righteous for someone who is supporting a player with rashford's track record on said issue

I'll go back to ignoring him now that I've said my piece...

Same here. It's just hard to let people off with such hypocrisy. We would really be better off just not engaging him at all

Because one of said players is no longer comfortable with the idea

However, the France international hopes to be given more chances after taking on his manager's instructions to play a key role in a vital win.

“We lost the last game, so it’s important for us to win and score," he told Sky Sports.

"The manager told me to find the space and I know Lukaku is good with his head.

"I want to play. I don't want to be on the bench!"

I'm not sure it's really working. Results are ok but we haven't exactly been banging in the goals over the last month or so. We've struggled to create chances in the last few games. We can't keep waiting for Martial or Rashford to save us from the left. We need to threaten from both sides and through the middle. Not just the left.

It's a given Martial wants to play and doesn't want to be on the bench, the only time to truly be worried is when a great player is happy to sit on his arse!

I agree with you to the extent that Jose has a tricky bit of man-management on his hands, but if he can make it clear to the both of them that they are central to his plans now and in the future and that both will get chances to impact matches (be it as a starter or from the bench as we saw again the other day) then I'm comfortable with Jose continuing with his ideas for now.

What I certainly don't want to see is our manager dancing to the tune of a player and, let's face it, his agent making noises through the media. I would hate to see Martial leave, but I trust that Jose sees both he and Rashford as central to his plans and will manage the situation properly.

Both have bad games already this season, as well as some games where they excelled or gave immediate impact from the bench.

Both have potential to be at least a really good player for United, if not worldies. As in Ribery/Robben level instead of Messi/Ronaldo level, I would still be very happy, but truth to the matter is that both are still very young and haven't been able to produce consistent performance throughout 90+ minutes, let alone the whole season.

Both are improving, physically for Rashford and his shooting techniques, and for Martial his dribbling/tricks and his defensive awareness. I am glad United have two of the brightest talents out there. Just hope both (especially Martial as Rashford is local lad) have patience in waiting for playing time and continue to develop themselves with the team.

I think in order to play both, Martial on the left and Rashford on the right would be the best solution for now. Martial with his dribbling skills and tricks and Rashford with his direct style, being speedy and crossing ability.

I think it's time to try them and Lukaku from the start, I know playing from the right is neithers preferred position however any other club would work on a way to get them all in the side at the same time

Next sunday......

Given that Jose very likely will play 3-5-2 / 3-4-1-2 / 3-4-2-1, and with Mkhi super out of form, the chance of them both starting has increased, at least slightly. I still think it's less than 50%. But at least it has increased ! Whether how they will fit into the system, Jose will figure it out, so take it easy guys !

Hopefully we can close this thread soon :o. Hope, there is only so much we can do IMO

I think when Pogba and Fellani are back we might actually see these too start but with our midfield difficulties Mou doesn’t want to trust them along with a 3 of Herrera Matic Mhiki.

It does highlight how much, IMO, we miss Pogba

How about we play both? Crazy idea i know..

IMO Martial is better than Rashford on the left because of his better technique and ability to cut inside, which makes him more unpredictable, Rashford on the other hand should be better on the right (hypothetically) because he is more direct, has blistering pace and it means he could swing in crosses with his stronger foot without having to stop and re position like he does now

IMO, Mata is a mixed bag on the right and right now i'd much rather have him pulling the strings in the middle than having an terribly out of form Miki there

I honestly don't fathom why it has to be one or the other, both of them deserve to play

I just feel uncomfortable that our two best talents are meant to compete.
