Marcus Rashford vs Anthony Martial (2017 / 2018 Season)

"Is more comfortable"? What a cowardly way to downplay Martial´s style.

Anything Mourinho says is wrong :wenger:.

Rashford wouldn't have made the run Martial did.

Oh really now.

Its just simple Martial is far better player than Rashford. I like Rashford but he never seems in control of the ball and against top sides where you will hardly get much hold of the ball, the few times you get the ball you need to make most of it, which Rashford as of now, is unable to do. So Martial to start for me always with Lukaku

He is a better player because he controls the ball better? :wenger:

I cant take any of this serious.

We've obviously got the perfect formula on this. Rashers to start, Tony Martial on after the 70th. We've for the most part been devastatingly good when this has happened.
How is it the perfect formula when we need our subs to change the game in our favor every time? Its always the most obvious sub too. Just play them both from the start. Teams always play their best players from the start id it fits the system. So why the feck wont we? Because one of them does wellas a sub? Guess what, he'll 100% do better then mkhitaryan or mata do from the start so just play them both and leave the lesser players on the bench. This suggestion that if a sub keeps doing well from the bench then he should stay on the bench is so dumb.

You know who would be a really good super sub agains tired defenders? Messi. Barca might as well keep him for the last 30 mins and hope he saves them every time late on instead of giving him the full game to tear apart the opposition. Real smart.

People do realise that if Mourinho starts both and has Rashford on the right, if a team sets up like Huddersfield and nullifies Martial, he'll just take Martial off and move Rashford back to the left mid game?

Of course people will say that depends on Martial's performance, but that's the point, Mourinho just does not think Martial is better than Rashford on the left, and playing Rashford on the right is a waste of his effectiveness.

The very contrived answer to you is: Bring your idea to Mourinho, for sure he'll take this novel idea to heart. The club paid him millions and he hasn't figured this out, what an idiot!

Sarcasm aside, I think the fact that our subs (whether Martial or Rashford) have changed the game for us and turned draws into wins and small wins into big wins is huge. There's no guarantee that both of them starting would yield better results, that's the problem. And if we become stuck, having a powerful option off the bench makes a big difference.

One starts, the other one comes on and scores.

Must have happened about 8-10 times this season!

It's our own version of Ronaldo vs Messi debate. As Zlatan put it, Messi (Martial) is a more of a natural while Ronaldo (Rashford) is a trained product. As it's proved though, you still can't really seperate the two, no matter what one values higher in a player in terms of talent. I think the same applies to Martial and Rashford. I hope we'll find an effective way to incorporate the both of them into the team at the same time.

Martial has been less effective when he has started imo.

I agree with this, but think it's partly down to not having a run as a starter. We saw last season that Martial needs his head in the right place to perform. When he gets the chance to start, he feels he has to have a world commanding game in order to keep his place and tries to do too much at times.

I'd keep it as it is for now, however when we have a nice set of fixtures in a row I'd give Martial 3 or 4 starts in a row to see if he can give the same performances he has been giving as a sub, from the start.

One caveat to that would be Chelsea next weekend, if we go with 352 again, I feel Martial is better equipped to cause them problems in partnership with Lukaku.

I love Rashford, he bleeds United and is a cracking player without a doubt. But when he has his head screwed on Martial is a beast. Either way, we’re lucky to have both of them as options because you could see either of them having a crack at any of the top 6 first teams. If De Bruyne forgot how to play football, that is.

They are in the same level and close in ability .Hopefully they develop to a greater level.

Fed up with this alternating crap, just play them both, they're too good to spend half their time on the bench. I understand the job they are doing is working for the team, but worry Martial will want to leave if he doesn't get enough game time.
Surely one of them can adapt so that they can both start.

They are both better than Micki and Mata so please play them both.
All everyone want to see is a front line of Rashford -Lukaku and Martial

Have you noticed what Mourinho said comparing those players today? If I recall well, that Martial is better to attack between the lines conducting the ball, and Rashford better at attacking the space.

Rashford is only 4 goals away from his entire total for last season and Martial is only 2 goals away from his. Both have come on leaps and bounds this season.

I think we'll see them both start together with Lukaku as soon as Zlatan is fit for the bench. If you start the three of them together now, and it doesn't work out, who do you turn to for the impact off the bench?

Then move Martial to the right. They have far more quality than any of the other options in either position and I think they'd both prefer to play on the right than sit of the bench.

Playing Martial on the right means he's gonna be pushed to go on the outside rather than cut inside, that's not really his game.

He'd be fine. Far too good a player not to be. You're just looking for problems

What? Im just being logical about it. Why should we force him into a position where he will be less effective?

For the good of the team. Plus they'd both prefer play than spend half their time on the bench. No idea why you're so convinced either of them wouldn't do well on the right. Both have all the attributes to play there.

Rashford is playing at a good level consistently,Martials swinging from one extreme to the other. He was terrible against Huddersfield,he was brilliant yesterday.....Rashford just seems to be doing it more consistently....

That's a complete myth, Rashford's had some stinkers as well. They've had about equal form thus far in the season.
Either way, they're both going to be hot and cold at that age, and they're not really effective on the right wing the little bit of time that they have played there, but as someone else mentioned it's not as if there's been great production from the right wing between Mata and Mikhi so why not try one of them there and they can sort of rotate during the game depending on how the defense responds. I feel that Lukaku plays better with Martial than Rashford, so if we can have Martial without losing Rashford, I can see Lukaku getting even more chances to score.

The only issue is I don't see Mata or Mikhi having that sub impact the way Rashford and Martial can.

Hopefully, if they both started, we'd be playing well enough for impact subs to not be as important in most of our games. We won't know until we try, I guess.

A question: this idea that you should keep one of your best players on the bench as an impact sub. Was this just invented to justify Jose's selections? I've never really heard it before this Martial/Rashford debate.

Perhaps someone can give me some examples of where else where this clearly well known strategy has been used?

Agreed the improvement in both is significant , both have great potential and still massive room. for improvement for me Rashford is the grafter and will run and run for the cause but if a ball is put in behind the defence I would much rather see Martial on the end of it as I feel he is much calmer in front of goal .But I wouldn't trust either as our main striker I don't think either is capable of 25 goals a season

I am hoping that you have been a United fan for sometime now? If so let me refresh your memory. Have you forgotten a certain Norwegian who used to play for us? His name is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After that a certain Mexican who is playing for West Ham now. Javier Hernandez. Both used to come off the bench regularly to score and win the matches for us.

It certainly is nothing new at Manchester United.

Neither were one of our best players, and Ole wasn't a 21 year old talent.

You'll do well to convince a young highly talented player that his future is as an impact sub. Even our homegrown players fecked off at some stage because they wanted to play regular football instead of being fringe players.

So much snark but you misread my post. I said one of our BEST players. Ole and Javier were class but I don't feel they were amongst our best players at the time. Impact sub was an obvious role for each. Im looking for an example of picking a weaker starting team so that we'd have a good impact sub.

Playing in ever match and scoring and even starting some games is not being a fringe player. If Martial or Rashford keeps coming off the bench and scoring and winning the match then so be it. So long as they get enough game time and win trophies they will be happy.
Playing the two of them together and when we are not winning, who is the one you need to bring off the bench to score and win the game? Daley Blind? Luke Shaw? Or route one Fellaini? Fellaini is injured right now and not available.
By the way Ole was 23 when he joined us and had not made a name for himself.

Not being snarky but I do not think of this the same way. To me the game is always 90 plus minutes. The subs are as important as the first starting 11. If at the end it is better to have that player on the bench to come and win games, then it is the best way to do. Rashford or Martial tires their defence and then either of them can come in and take advantage of the tired defence and win games. If they start together then we have no one to bring off the bench with that pace and skill to win the game. Only route one Fellaini and he is injured now.
By the way I think Ole is the best goal scorer among all of our strikers at that time.

Fine. But can you give some examples of teams keeping one of their best players on the bench to play that role? I'm genuinely wracking my brain and failing to think of any?

The whole point is that by playing them together, we should be winning most of the time anyway, or at least playing well, so a super sub shouldn't be as much of a worry.

I get the concept. But I'm pretty sure just about all teams ever tended to start their best players most of the time. I'm not being smart here. Genuinely just looking for a few examples.

They have played together and it was not much of a success.
From the start? The only time that happened was against Burton Albion (where they played well), wasn't it? I'm talking about these two along with Lukaku in a trio; we've yet to see how that would fare.

You do realize, that Martial has scored 17 goals in a season for us? This, in a misfiring LVG side and in his debut season in English football.
