Marcus Rashford (Out) | Rashford: “For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps.”

If we have to then we should be able to subsidize his sale. Because he is not only tapping into the finacial side of things. At this point, his mere presence is problematic for the club to move freely anywhere.
1) He is a poster boy, an underperforming one for years, taking in large amount of money. Every time a manager plays him or drops him, it divides the fans. He could do charity anonymously but seems deliberate well timed to coincide with scrunity he gets. I could be wrong. Its another distraction we could be without until we get to our winning ways once again.
2) He sets a tone of mediocrity that trickles down all over the club. Having a star underperforming colleague that pays twice as much as you, will motivate nobody. What are we trying to tell the kids coming up? Be mediocre and as long as you are local boy you are entitled for large amount of money.
3) How many times that we passed up decent punts on player because someone says 'because marcus plays that role already'.
4) Being ruthless now is mandatory at this stage because its been a decade now, and its getting harder and harder to get back to the winning ways. You are allowed to be sentimental only when you are winning. This will clearly send a message and fortify the direction the club is taking.

No top clubs will tolerate marcus. Not even as a squad player.
  • He has underperformed when the team has underperformed, maybe a talismanic player should drag the rest of the team up, but there are very few players who actually do this.
  • What is he meant to do about his wages refuse to accept them, demand he is paid less?
  • The only reason he divides fans is because of the potential he has.
  • Why should he do charity anonymously? I am sure he does more than is actually publicised, but the whole reason charities want celebrities is because of the attention they bring, highlighting their causes, bringing in more support and awareness, worth far more than any anonymous contribution would bring. In addition it is extremely good PR for the club, is it timed to distract, coincide with scrutiny, who knows, maybe he does more when he is feeling low because it is something which makes him feel good, maybe the press just focus intensely on him in these moments, but this whole line of criticism seems very cynical and like picking flies for the sake of it!
  • He sets a tone of mediocrity etc. ??? maybe he does but who is at fault, the manager for allowing it? the club for overpaying him? blaming Rashford for being local, overpaid and not benching himself when he isn't playing well, I think you want him to be a leader, and outspoken, forceful personality and he simply is not that, he is a very unassuming, quiet guy.
  • Point 3 could say that about any player, any position, what is the point? there is theoretically always something better, shinier, faster more...
  • I agree we should be ruthless, or rather decisive would be better and we should have been for a long while, and not just with Rashford.
People want to hate on Rashford because he is not what they want him to be, he promised so much and for a lot of seasons and individual matches he has been that player, he has won us matches with individual brilliance, he has worked hard, knuckled down, but it is going south, has done since the start of last season and so now lets throw him under the bus, he can be the sacrificial lamb to blame all our woes on.

I get it, I really do, Rashford has been extremely disappointing for the last 18 months, if for nothing else his seeming lack of effort, his appearance of sulkiness etc... is what burns the most, at the very least as fans we demand 100% effort. And it really is only the last 18 months where this has been an issue and where he has underperformed, but lets also acknowledge that the whole squad has been shite, guilty of not putting in the effort etc... for the last 18 months.

Rashford is under more scrutiny in the press and from fans than any other player, it is a Utd thing, we are the biggest club, even when we are shite we sell more papers, get more clicks and occupy more time in the news cycle than any other team, and not just by a bit, by a long way, he has the misfortune of being a homegrown, well paid poster boy, who lets face it embarrassed the government during lockdown which brought even more scrutiny on him, I am not excusing the sulkiness or the lack of effort, he has the money if he is unhappy just go away and find your bliss, but what I do not get is why any fan of Man Utd wants to hate on him so much, what has he realistically done to make any fan feel this way, sure you want him dropped, sold, whatever... but give the man some respect, he has done nothing to engender this level of nastiness.

I think Rashford should go, I think the time is right, I think he doesn't really fit Amorim's system, I think he needs a break away from Man Utd, I hope a deal can be struck that gets him to a team who play football that suits his style, and that he reignites his scoring, heck I would be happy even if that was at Arsenal (as long as we continue to improve too) although I think he would benefit from going abroad where he would be under far less scrutiny.

People hate Rashord because hes taking home the best part of 400k a week and not producing anywhere near that level of performance. He has to go for the sake of the team/club.

Yes it was, thank you
It was a post that didn't criticise the poster and referred in very general terms to the watchers of an individual widely known to not be a Manchester United supporter but who pretends to be for clicks, and who circles negativity around Manchester United in order to make their living. If we are on a forum where watching that dickhead talking shite about United from his bedroom every day is to be defended then perhaps this isn't the place it used to be.

I won't lie—I am a bit miffed by the sympathy he's receiving here and on social media.

The main problem with Rashford is that he's not giving 100% on the pitch and he's not working as hard as he should. He has only himself to blame and should not be getting sympathy for not giving 100.

The other issue I have is the timing of the interview. Saying you want a new challenge a day after you were dropped for your lack of application shows that the player lacks a champion mentality.

I’ve defended Rashford a lot but I do find it weird that a lot of people are refusing to acknowledge he’s played a massive part in this himself. He gets all the privileges of our most successful academy graduates without putting in half of the work or showing the same commitment on and off the pitch. I know some feel the need to provide balance to the relentless criticism and I completely understand that but even if you ignore the off field stuff and look at his performances alone, I don’t see how anyone can argue he’s not been given a fair opportunity.

Posters seem to want to reside in this negative bubble of endless moaning, hate and controversy.... I'm glad not everyone subscribes to this miserable existence

Be happy that you seemingly have gotten what you wanted there's no need for posters to be shifting there sights to people that want to be hopeful, optimistic or empathic.... go do you

Saudi, China, or plenty of clubs on a loan with obligation to buy, similar to the Sancho situation.
I admit that I haven't really looked at the situation over there for quite some time, but isn't the Chinese football offensive already over for a bit? Haven't heard of them making any expensive purchases of high-profile players in a while. I also can't really imagine Rashford being interested in playing in China, or Saudi Arabia for that matter. The only "retirement league" I could see him going to is MLS, and they won't pay a fortune.

Atletico should go for him if they can find an agreement regarding his wages. He would be their second best player, and arguably best player if he finds form in a good role, and their current best player in Griezmann is turning 34 soon.

Do you honestly think he has the righht mentality to go there and play under Simeone?

Yes. 100%. Doesn't show bottle. Remember last year, was it Newcastle - when he was played on right wing and absolutely strolled around? Has a billy big balls mentality. The wage packet that the idiots in charge gave him allowed that to occur. Doesn't try hard enough, and showing now with this that he doesn't have the tools for the fight. Have said it for a few years now that we should part ways, great to see it might finally happen. Nothing against him himself, if he can go on and prove me wrong elsewhere, fair play to him. But as a Manchester United player, I hate watching him.

Walking off the other day, not acknowledging the manager after being subbed. He thinks he's far better than he actually is. Another Pogba.

People hate Rashord because hes taking home the best part of 400k a week and not producing anywhere near that level of performance. He has to go for the sake of the team/club.
Yeah apart from he isn't taking home that or anywhere near that given that he pays 40% tax over £50k and 45% over £125k his annual take home is just over half what he earns £9.6m out of £18.2.... but that is hardly the point, still no reason to hate, want him benched, dropped, sold.... yes, want him criticised yes, but the pure bile and hatred I see from some is just pure wrong and inappropriate

People keep saying he's been poor since that great season he had in Ten Hags first year. The reality is he's been bad for much longer. I remember being disapointed when he wasnt sold the summer before that. I seem to remember a match when a ball rebounded off the keeper and he didnt bother even trying to go for it. West Ham maybe?
That was typical of his contribution at the time.
When he had that great year, I thought, 'shows you how much I know about football... I'd have got rid of him in the summer'.
The new pointing to the temple celebration was supposed to signify a new dawn; the penny had dropped, supposedly.
I Feel like he's probably lost his hunger... came on the scene very young. It may well be that his career as a seriously talented footballer is over.
As a United fan looking on it seems pathetic and frustrating...
As a 40 year old man, looking at a 27 year old man who is a multimillionaire and already achieved his dreams I totally get it.
it takes lazer like focus and unbeleivable drive and determination to be an elite-level athlete. Even the slightest loss of this will result in performances that arent good enough

The reason people want him benched, and sold is because his attitude, application, and performance absolutely stink.

His wage packet demands a lot more than say .. someone like Malacia who is on pittance in comparison.

Just like in business, the intern is not expected to do as much as the CEO.

For context here's the excerpts from the presser:
BBC said:
"This kind of club needs big talent and he's a big talent, so he just needs to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus."

Asked about Rashford's desire for a "new challenge", Amorim said: "I think it's right. We have here a new challenge, it's a tough one. For me it's the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation and I already said this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. I really hope all my players are ready for this new challenge."

Amorim added the club will "try different things" to help Rashford find the "best levels he has shown in the past". United face Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Thursday. Amorim refused to confirm whether Rashford or winger Alejandro Garnacho - who was also left out of the squad to face City - would feature against Spurs.

"We have one more training session, but it's the same situation [for] all the other players," said Amorim.
"If they train well then I have to make a choice. We will see at the end of training."
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c627wvd9vwvo

Personally, I think that while he's offering an olive branch of sorts, he's also being diplomatic. United are better with an "on form" Rashford. But this has happened all too fleetingly in his career here. He can still work his way back into the team, if he's not mentally checked out. Which it sounds and looks like he has.

On the flip side, I understand the difference between what Amorim sees and what Rashford sees. For Amorim, trying to revitalise United is a new challenge. He just got here. For Rashford, it's been a challenge for the last 8-9 years under 5-6 different managers. New manager coming in talking about a new challenge, will feel like Groundhog Day to him.

He is given more than a fair opportunity. The discussion is now beyond football skills, it’s about attitude and passion on the pitch. He seems uninterested and not willing to adapt change. ETH and now Ruben ask for intensity on the pitch. With marcus, it is unfortunately the opposite. Sometimes I feel he just jogs or walks around the pitch when he should be creating space or tracking players back.

His comments about leaving just after being dropped for the city match obviously puts his attitude and commitment to question.

I read amorim’s comments about his willingness to work with him and support him. I hope ruben doesn’t make the mistake of keeping him. He anyway doesn’t fit the new formation.

Time to move on

As if Rashford hasn't had at least 3 very good seasons at United in the last 5-6 years? He also didn't have the advantage that Foden has (up until now, funnily enough, just when coincidentally his performances turned bad?), a great team, GOAT level manager, and being part of a football club that knows what they're doing and have competent people leading it, where winning on the pitch is the most important objective.

"At least" 3 very good season in 5-6 years ? Which ones were those then beyond 22-23? Are you not manipulating statistics by restricting "very good season" to only the last 5-6 years when this is his 10th?

Oh I see, so it's not Rashford's fault it's everyone elses. Ain't that a surpise.....

Is that you Marcus? Or do you work for his PR team?

I want him sold too TBH, unless he can show me something he hasn't recently!

But the rest is hogwash, Malacia earns £75k per week, heck Obi Martin is on £30k I do not think they should get away with any less effort.

Point is his wage should have nothing to do with it, it should not be part of this discussion, another discussion about whether he or other players are overpaid, maybe, but hating on him for being overpaid, what is he meant to be a fecking idiot, it is money, if somebody pays you more than you are worth bank it and laugh....

All this money bollox is just distraction and jealousy, just boil it down to whether it is better to sell or keep player, based on performances I think the answer is clear

And as for CEO, normally do feck all and know feck all, almost certainly the hardest working person will be the intern

That's about it. New challenge, next steps, almost with an undertone the next steps are assumed to be onwards and upwards, leaving this place after outgrowing it, but not justified by the context

Instead, if there had to be an interview at all, he could have modestly agreed that we don't all reach our peak all the time, it was understandable the manager leaving him out this time, now it's not a big thing and it's behind us, roll on to opportunities to try harder and do better in the coming weeks

Saudi, China, or plenty of clubs on a loan with obligation to buy, similar to the Sancho situation.
But who are those plenty of clubs?

Doubt he us going to Saudi, China don't do these sort of deals anymore

Loan with an obligation, would still very likely require him to accept a pay cut or us to cover part his wages

I really don’t like the fuss around this. It brings more media attention and I don’t think this is needed. We just won with City and instead of talking about it, we are talking about Marcus interview. And of course Amorim needs to reply all of those questions about him during presser .

That's absurd and not true at all.

Regarding the wage, yes it does matter, he's a senior player, a supposed star of the team and league, earning wages worthy of a world top ten player, all at the while the club is in a difficult situation with people losing their jobs left and right, he should at the very least leave no room for even debating his work ethic and dedication.

I don’t see how anyone can argue he’s not been given a fair opportunity.

I don't see many, if at all any, contributors arguing he's not been given opportunities.

Some of the bilious reaction to Rashford is curious. He's far from the first top-earner to fall out of form for a long period, but still he's
openly discussed as 'toxic' and 'symptomatic' of all our myriad problems.

It provokes the thought something else than performance is in play here. Possibly his lifestyle. Possibly the caf's pro-right wing commentariat having their cake.

Who knows?

If he's going we should just thank him for his service, discuss replacements and move on.

Definition of the problem SAF was talking about about player becoming bigger than the club. 100 articles, podcasts, social media content and to top it off a presser specifically for Rashford.

We just beat city by actually outplaying them for the first time in like 15 years and all there is online is the media talking about the world ending because Rashford may leave, sick of it!

What hit me the most about his PR piece is how he brushed aside the derby win to turn the attention to himself:

“but it’s happened, we won the game so let's move on. It’s disappointing but I’m also someone as I’ve got older I can deal with setbacks".

Like it's a surprise we won without him.

The more media coverage Rashford wants, the more right reasons there are to sell him right now.

I can't wait for the day the Rashford media circus is over.

The media and pundits protected him all this time. Only when Amorim came in and took action, everyone is calling Rashford out

Pogba was heavily criticised!!

Agree to most part. All being said and done, at 350k he is not worth any of what he brings. People are not hard on him, people are not being hard on him enough. That's the problem. He gets away with everything. No other top player for any top club will survive this. Not for this long. Only at man utd, and only him. He needs the club more than the club needs him. We need a better poster boy. If we are to move forward, you have move him on. Even on a loss. You can't be keep doing the same thing (carrying him) over and over again for years and expecting to have a positive direction all of a sudden?

What was the point of this article? He could have easily secured a move away from press limelight.

Rashford does need a move away. Hopefully he kick start his career somewhere else
To get his point across , he obviously contacted Winter to appear at this event so he could give an interview

Quality control
The ones who protect him or try to find some excuses of this situation are cu-cks. Really.

He is selfish, entitled and bad influence on the club.

Just look at the harsh truth that he isn't good enough and his mentality isn't United-worth. Accept it and move on.

Raise the standards, dear fans! Nobody cares if he is from the academy - then he surely must know what true United standards are. And he pees on them. Sorry, but that's what it is.

I think he had go, he's a player who's effort and output didn't match his superstar wages add to that, he doesn't fit the new managers system. That being said, I don't begrudge him doing that interview. He's trying to leave on his on terms.
Just after the game, there were not only wide spread reports about him being put up for sale, but these reports also framed his sale as the symbol of cultural reset that was needed by the club. They were pushing him out and made it public.

I stated earlier this week, I didn't see the benefit to the club briefing out those reports.
Why not send the culture message after he's left?

I'm sure I'm missing a piece of the puzzle.

I really don’t like the fuss around this. It brings more media attention and I don’t think this is needed. We just won with City and instead of talking about it, we are talking about Marcus interview. And of course Amorim needs to reply all of those questions about him during presser .
This is what i mean when i say he divides the fans and provides distraction to the club everytime we need to rally up. When people begin to question him, his PR machines will pop up and some charity event will be timed to perfection. Marcus will announce he is fitter than ever and ready to step up. Next few games he will pseudo press and run from left into those blind alleys again and again until he score a few goals. We as fans will cheer him up once again. All is forgiven.

I am definitely ready for a post-Rashford era new challenge. Sick of this massive hype that fizzles out to nothing when he is actually on the pitch.

The timing is really shitty in the sense that we've just out-performed City at their own ground and claimed a great victory, but we're talking about 1 of the players who wasn't even in the squad on the day instead of the 11 that were on the field.

I'm happy for him to go. He's been here a while and I feel that we've already seen the best of him. I can't see him doing better than the 30 goals in 56 games that he managed in 2022/23. Those are great stats, but I honestly consider that to be an outlier rather than the norm. He's a player who doesn't want to play up top and only seems to perform in one specific position. He is also very up and down mentally, his work rate massively fluctuates depending on his mood, and he's massively over-priced for what he produces on the pitch. He's a brand, but one that I think has out-lived his shelf life. His mouth is bigger than his talent.

A good way of thinking about it is if Rashford was on the market right now, would I beg United to sign him? The answer is no.
