Marcus Rashford (Out) | Rashford: “For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps.”

Probably sell for £25-30m to offset his wages demands on a new club. Still, that's profit for PSR and massive wages off our bill. Was so happy when Sancho left on loan and will feel exactly the same with Rashford. It's what's best for our club.

Henry Winter
Marcus Rashford had a day off today so he returned to his old primary school, Button Lane, south Manchester, and handed out 420 Christmas presents to all the pupils. It was a long-planned event, eliciting delight from the children. One boy scarcely more than four years old, had a special message for the Manchester United striker. “Thank you for the food as well, Marcus.”Rashford will leave United one day, possibly in the January window given the mood music inside Carrington, but his influence will remain with many children across the country following his ongoing work tackling child food poverty. “It was emotional to hear that, 100%,” Rashford told me of the four-year-old’s words of thanks. “I don’t like to see kids go through what I went through growing up so as many kids as I can help I will. That's why the programme needs to go on for as long as possible and it needs to keep improving.”Wherever you stand on the Rashford debate, and he certainly generates headlines, he has been a force for good in so many children’s lives. One of the Button Lane teachers said that Rashford’s present will be the only one some of the 420 kids receive this Christmas. Another pointed through the window to the 3G five-a-side Rashford funded. Some balance is required in the current Rashford debate. I was shown some of the DMs he receives on a regular basis and they are utterly despicable. There are rumours of a lack of professionalism. “I do feel misunderstood but I’m fine with it. I’m a very simple person. I love football. That’s been my life from the beginning.”At 27, and having scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for United (and 17 in 60 for England), Rashford remains a huge talent, and will be in demand, possibly from Spain, when he leaves United. Yes, he could do more on the field, certainly out of possession. Yes, he was dropped from Sunday’s match-day squad against Manchester City by Ruben Amorim, who questioned his application in training. “It’s disheartening to be left out of a Derby,” Rashford replied, “but it’s happened, we won the game so let's move on. It’s disappointing but I’m also someone as I’ve got older I can deal with setbacks. What am I going to do about it? Sit there and cry about it. Or do my best the next time I’m available.”He awoke this morning to headlines detailing United’s desire to sell him. I ask Rashford if he’s staying or going? “For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps.” All of his words were prefaced with respect for the club which has been his home for almost 20 years. “When I leave it's going to be ‘no hard feelings’. You’re not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That’s me as a person. "If I know that a situation is already bad I'm not going to make it worse. I've seen how other players have left in the past and I don't want to be that person. When I leave I'll make a statement and it will be from me.” From the heart as he’ll always be a Red? “Yes! 100%. 100%.”He’s 27, peak time for a player, combining experience and athleticism, and he should be embedded in a team, creating an even bigger legacy. “I’m halfway through my career,” Rashford replies. “I don’t expect my peak to be now. I've had nine years so far in the Premier League and that’s taught me a lot, that’s helped me grow as a player and as a person. So I don't have any regrets from the last nine years. I won’t have any regrets going forward because I take things day by day and sometimes bad things happen, sometimes good things happen. I just try and keep a fine balance.” The best is yet to come? “100%. That's my mentality.”He craves an England return and chance of making the 2026 World Cup. “That still excites me. It's playing for your country in the biggest competition in the world. I've had the chance to do it before (Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022) and it's an unbelievable experience. If I got the opportunity again, I'll try and grab it with both hands.”Even though he has scored three times for Amorim, the new head coach’s 3-4-2-1 system does not appear to suit Rashford. The player himself makes a point about his adaptability, whether left wing, No 9 or No 10. “I have traits to play in all three positions. Some positions are more natural to me, some positions I have to train more and do a bit more tactical (work). The left side suits me the best.” But Amorim doesn’t play 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. He plays with two 10s. “The left 10 still suits me but you have to adapt your game. The biggest skill-set is adaptability. People might not see it but eventually they'll see I’ve played in plenty of different positions under all the managers.”If his days under Amorim look numbered, Rashford will pursue his dreams elsewhere. The last time Rashford returned to Button Lane, he was asked by a young girl “what’s your biggest achievement?” He replied, “I haven't achieved it yet.” That attitude echoes his love of “Relentless”, the book by the American mindset guru Tim Grover. Rashford’s not fallen out of love with football, he’s still aspiring to achieve things in the sport that’s his world. “Definitely, regardless of what gets said about me I have my own dreams. I’ve achieved parts of it. But I’m not at where I want to be. But the problem is when you get there, you create another thing. It’s a cycle that never stops. There’s not really an end point.” Just the pursuit of excellence. Rashford needs to intensify that pursuit. He has the talent. And it looks like that talent will move away from #MUFC. He will still return to Button Lane. Marcus Rashford won’t forget where he came from. Nor will he forget United.

I'll always look back on his early performances when he broke through fondly, especially that debut home game against Arsenal where he destroyed them. However, he has disgraced himself these last two seasons and has overstayed his welcome. The question is, why did he stop giving a shit despite being a boyhood fan who grew up at the club? I guess we'll never know.

best decision for everyone involved. Not sure he'll have a big market, given the combination of high wages and poor play, but who knows ... if he comes out with this in public, he might already have something lined up.

I think it's a bit off that Winter piece which is like a come and get me plea advert while he's still very much employed and can't be sold for another few weeks at least.

I’d probably expect PSG as the most likely destination. A small fee around €30m and he gets to keep his high wages.

Did we need to be so public in declaring he's for sale? Expect us to get insultingly low offers now, one of which we'll succumb into accepting too out of sheer desperation. Daniel Levy probably licking his lips preparing a £15million bid.
I don’t think that is a problem when you consider his past performances.

He never really bothered to learn the game. So unintelligent as a player.

Long overdue to be fair. He's always been a player reliant on purple patches of form and individual moments rather than a consistent and reliable team player. It's one reason Utd as a team have been so poor, because we've relied too much on individuals from like Rashford and more recently Garnacho, in the past Bruno, you can't keep on relying on individuals to win you games. if you want to compete for league titles again, we need 11 fully committed players, Rashford hasn't been that for some time.

They still haven’t really replaced Mbappe in terms of a star name, so the Temu version of Mbappe is probably the next best thing.

He’s been dropped by our last few managers even Ragnick could see it he must be toxic which is certainly disappointing being a local lad and supposed fan.

Great PR team though doesn’t he

Why is everyone saying he is going to PSG? Based on what? He was linked 2 years ago?
They’ve been linked with him for a number of years and it’s still the same ownership group over there. I can’t see any PL teams being able to match his wages and I don’t think it’s yet time for him to go to Saudi league.

Could be a London club but PSG have been linked in the past and their owner has named him before.

Damn! Such a sad state of affairs, always hoped he would go on to be a United legend in them early years and will be weird not having around after nearly a decade, but it was obvious to all something was gonna give.
Whatever happens next I wish him all the best and hope he recovers his career. Will follow him closely.

That was before Enrique taking over.

Winter put out a PR puff piece for Rashford and he mentioned Spain as a destination, so I'd be reading more into that than any theoretical link with PSG.

I see Rashford as the type of player that you can afford when the rest of your team is well oiled and established, a luxury if you will, I wish him well.

Also it’s in line with everything Ineos have been doing so far, they aren’t taking prisoners on any level, I like it

Who in Spain outside of Barca and Real could take on those wages.

His contract length will mean it wont be that low.
On the contrary I'd argue the opposite. The fact he's expecting a crazy high salary for at least another 3 years will definitely factor in how much potential suitors are willing to pay for him.

Curious timing, makes me wonder if he's been told outright that he's not going to be picked again, possibly in response to the club finding out he's agreed deals with other club/s. Putting this out there at least stops the questions if he remains sidelined. Be interesting to see the club's response

I stood by him for a lot longer than most and I'm always sad to see our best academy players leave but it's clearly time now for he and the club to part ways. Wish him all the best and hope he can rediscover his best form

It’s just a coincidence how Henry Winter just happens to be at the event to do an interview with him I’m guessing

A long shot but I think he'd do well in Atletico's counterattacking system. That's if he survives getting a mullering from Simeone if he's not putting the work in on the training pitch and match days.

I don't think I've read an article or piece that's more self indulgent than that in my whole life. What tripe. I thought it was satire when I started reading it.

It's clear as day that Amorim, the new coaching staff and INEOS have completely seen through his bullshit.

If he's not prepared to apply himself and give everything by fighting and working for his place in this team, especially after everything that this club has given him?

It's a complete show of disrespect from Marcus. Local lad or not, he shouldn't have the privilege of pulling on the shirt or walking out at Old Trafford again.

Adiós.

That’s a mental interview to do. Winter doesn’t put it out there without Rashford’s consent either.

When was the last time one of our own players publicly stated they were ready to leave in the middle of a season?

Such a bizarre, self-interested thing to do.

I hope he can go to a respectable club that can compete at the highest level and he can revitalize his career there. Barca/Atletico/Bayern/one of the Italian big three. Or Arsenal if he stays in England.

Can only see him going to Saudi for any decent money.

Personally think he would do well somewhere like West Ham.

Maybe direct some of your ire towards Henry Winter who has shown his ‘independence’ for all to see. The interview is as probing as Oprah’s of Harry & Meghan.

I critique Rashford all the time but I am genuinely disappointed it's come to this.

I can still remember his debut goals. What a week that was.

Kinda funny that it started for him on a Thursday night and looks like it'll end on one. Can't see the manager overlooking Rashford going public about leaving days before a competitive fixture.

I genuinely thought he was going to be a lifer and break Rooney's goal record. C'est la vie.

Not sure why some people are annoyed at him for this. The club have made it clear he's basically transfer listed. Best for both parties.

Was this interview done before the derby, perhaps why he was dropped? Or was it after the derby? If after, he shouldn't be playing for the club again.

He's more Spurs or Everton level now.

Can’t see Simeone putting up with his lack of effort and lack of consistency.
