Marcus Rashford (Out) | Ornstein: United want to keep, will only consider substantial bids

Depends on Garnacho's long term position.

It's either left or right, 6 prem goals so he could be in 10-15 goal output this season with huge potential to increase.

Him as the direct option one side and then an Eze type who can drift inside would be a logical long term solution.

Normally the PSG link gets floated when Rashford wants a new deal. I personally think you should sell him but him having years left on his deal makes that unlikely this summer.

it’s all moot anyway, there’s absolutely no way the new owners sell him without having a proper look at him first. I’m sure Brailsford and the new staff will fancy themselves to get more consistency out of him and to put a much better team around him on the pitch. I can’t see us selling unless it’s a crazy bid given the new money behind us. He’s surely on his last chance though as the main guy.

He
Ha, good one

100m is good money for him and since he's come through the academy massively helps our FFP solution. He's already got his biggest contract signing here so there will be very few chances here on in to make money on him.

With Mbappe going one of the only clubs who might spend the necessary money might do. It might well be good business all around - I'm sure he'd tear it up in Paris, and we could use the money to dig us out of the Anthony/Greenwood/Casemiro/Sancho/Mount shaped mountain of wasted money we've created.

But in a world where Hojland goes for 70m+ what would be the right valuation?

We'll regret not shipping him off if we decline a serious offer from PSG or another club outside of England.

As someone else noted, shipping him and McSauce off alone could fund a few key players who might actually contribute consistently to a turnaround of the club.

I’d try to sell him.

For whatever reason he just doesn’t look bothered to be here and I don’t think he’s that good a player. Once that pace goes, he’s a very limited player. There isn’t going to be some playing renaissance a la Ryan Giggs with him.

Maybe the change of scenery revitalises him or maybe he begins the slide into mediocrity.

It would be a hell of message by INEOS to the rest of the club that no-one is safe regardless of being the poster boy, and everyone doesn’t get complacent and comfy, which I believe the Glazers have let happen with players like Pogba and Sancho.

Imagine Rashford trying to play the late Giggs CM role

Wouldn't be too sad to see him go. Replace him with Neto and put Garnacho back on the left wing.

If he does go it would be a far better move for Marcus than for United. A sale we would regret.

Our fans as always are absolutely nuts, Rashford has been the only player for absolutely years now that consistently scores against the very best teams. We don’t have anyone else like that in the squad and we’d have to spend every penny received to replace him & then hope like hell the new signing works out.

He’d also be the last major one of the Pogba Lingard Rashford Henderson Williams Martial and even Greenwood vintage of homegrown and young players that aren’t very likeable. None have been particularly well managed.

Rashford is really really likeable. A local lad who hasn’t forgotten his roots and stands up for people much less fortunate than himself. A really well spoken lad also.

There really aren’t many more likeable footballers so no idea what you’re basing your opinion on?

Marcus is just the latest scapegoat in a long line, seemingly because he’s human, has human traits and emotions, and is fallible like a human. He seems to be held responsible for not single-handedly winning us every treble since his debut, and there is more than a touch of jealousy of his wages and lifestyle too. It’s sad really.

Not selling him at this point would be silly business. Poster boy or not, everyone gets moved on one way or the other. So far in his United career, he's won us feck all, even if he goes on to be better it won't be to the point of us regretting fleecing them for 120m+ and simply walking out of our FFP issues at the most critical turning point of our club over the last 35years.

Please please please let it happen.

If United manage to get 100+ mill for him, this would be the second-best deal of the summer, just behind Liverpool fleecing that Saudi club for Salah.

Doesn’t make a lot of sense. Mbappe is their #9, despite buying Ramos and Kolo Muani. That Barcola kid is on the LW. So will they get Rashford with the intent on playing him as a ST? Would be a strange way to go about things.

I think a LW makes perfect sense when you look at their squad:

--------------------------------Kolo Muani/Ramos--------------------
Rashford/Barcola------------------------------------------Dembele/Asensio
---------------------Vitinha/Soler-----ZaireEmery/Lee-------------
------------------------------------Ugarte/Fabian--------------------------
Mendes/Beraldo-Lucas/Kimpembe-Marquinhos/Skriniar----Hakimi/Mukiele

and Barcola is only 21, so him being a backup for a few years makes sense.

That said, I would imagine that Leao and Kvara are the first and 2nd choice in some order for PSG, ahead of Rashford.

But yeah they spent a fortune on two traditional #9s and their defence is quite set, so the obvious move to replace Mbappe is to buy the best LW they can and hope one of the strikers comes good, maybe with the extra money from not paying Mbappe you ship out Ramos at a loss and buy Osimhen. Maybe try to grab a star CM or AM too, like Wirtz or Bernardo if the money is burning a hole in their pockets.

Not sure I buy the argument that he'd be all that difficult to replace. I mean yes when he's on form like last year and hitting 30 goals a season but that's been one season in his career for a 350K a week player and we'd be hopefully looking at getting a player that has other great attributes to his game besides goals (better chance creation, technical ability, and workrate which is absolutely crucial to the way EtH sets us up to play with aggressive pressing etc).

I'd be genuinely astonished if this happens because it would be quite a statement and now would be the best time to do it really, when he's in his prime, also it would probably be a good move for him, maybe less pressure in a different league? I have no faith it will happen though.

@Adnan Who would you have a young replacement then?

Id be down if we’re going reasonable like for like:
  1. Tel

My guess is we'd buy a backup for Garnacho for a moderate amount and then spend the fee and wages elsewhere (new right side of defence, a #6, an RW and another striker).

It's hard to argue with selling him if we can get 100M for him, the downside risk is much higher than the upside at this point, it's a ton of money, we still basically need to rebuild most of the squad and Garnacho is one of 4 players (Mainoo, Hojlund, Lisandro) you would expect to be here for the next 5+ years and is probably best off in his same position.

Same logic as selling Bruno if only because Bruno is 30 next season as opposed to 27 like Rashford. I won't be shocked if we sell them both and pocket 150-180M to rebuild like Chelsea have done, even if it means we aren't in the CL for a couple years. That could buy 4 quality players if we identify them right.

He's absolutely not worth 100m, I've no idea where people get that number from. He's had more poor seasons than good and if there are clubs out there watching, they'll know that too. I'm reading that Leao would be available for 100m Euros and he looks a player that creates as well scores. Rashford is a £60m player.

League 2022/23:
Rashford: 17G 5A
Kvara: 12G 10A

League 2023/24:
Rashford: 5G 2A
Kvara: 6G 3A

He's an exceptional young talent, and people who watch full Napoli games can judge better, but it seems from stats and the highlights I've watched he's taken a pretty big fall in form and productivity this season - and inconsistency is the big complaint people have with Rashford. It would also not fix that decade-long problem at RW unless Garnacho is to be shifted permanently.

For all those saying he needs to be replaced with a different type of player, more a playmaking type , that would leave the team with
1 inconsistent young striker, 1 winger with decent goalscoring but not really a finisher, 1 AM with occasional good shooting, 1 CM who likes to get in the box and destroys the midfield shape while doing it...
and that's it. You can fill that team with prime Xavi and Iniesta and Silva, and they would win nothing.

In this market he is. Lukaku was 100m, Grealish was 100m, Felix was 120m, Coutinho was 105m, Antony 85m...

Leao is exactly the same type of player as Rashford. Same weaknesses, very similar playstyle too. He's also not scored in the league for 3 months. He's score 3 league goals all season. A classic case of the grass is greener.

Rashford wouldn't be our starting LW if we had a capable RW, Garnacho has proved that he'd start over Rashford already this season.
And who is competing with him for that spot if we Sell Rashford and don't buy another LW .

I am all for selling Rashford but if we do that we absolutely need another player who primarily plays on left .

Grealish is a better player than Rashford. Felix was a few years ago and Am paid for the potential, that couldn't happen with Marcus. Coutinho was also many moons ago and he'd been killing it in 'the best league in the world' at the time. And do you really need me to explain why Antony cost that much?

He's not the player I would go for but he looks a better player on the eye test.

Would gladly sell him for 40 - 50 odd million. He’s a footballer with very very little football intelligence who is almost entirely reliant on his sole trick of cut inside and shoot. We won’t get anywhere with our supposed star men being of his standard.

Doesn’t work that way. Those signings were made at the peak hype levels of those players. Rashford’s peak hype was last year and since then he’s been a bit of a joke so obviously he’s not worth 100m. It’s like asking for 70m right now for Antony becuase we once signed Bebe for 16m.

Would sell him. But PSG would be crazy to sign him, their current forwards are all better than him.

I hope to God they take him off our hands.
200%
We need money badly, and he is way too inconsistent

Unfortunately, I am not buying that anybody in Europe wants to buy him and pay him his current insane salary. It's all media clickbait. In reality, only United fans think there's a line of big clubs who think he is an MBappe replacement. It's a delusion. Others see his inconsistencies even better than we do, since they are not blinded by "local lad" sentiments

He's not the player I would go for but he looks a better player on the eye test.
How many games have you actually watched, though? This happens quite often, we tend to overlook an opposition team's players' weaknesses especially because we don't actually watch enough games to see them. It's like how lots of people think Kimmich is a great 6 but if you ask most Bayern fans they say he needs a 6 next to him. If you ask most other fans who our best player is they would say Rashford. Ask the average United fan nowadays, I reckon most would say Martinez or Bruno.

A don't agree. We need a different profile of player. He's a pure counter player. We should be looking to move away from that if we're to become a top side.

Agreed.

The big issue with Rashford is that I don't think he loves football. The pressure, expectation, and criticism that come with being a high profile player. Even when he scores a goal, it is more relief than joy. Contrast that with Rasums or Garnacho, and it is night and day. You can't wipe the smiles off their faces. If the opportunity arises and we don't sell him this summer, it will be a massive mistake. Right footed inverted wingers are also easier to replace than almost any other position.

Fanboy rubbish. People dont like him because he looks like he detests every minute he plays football for the club. And struggles to break into a slow jog most of the time.

That plus being absurdly stupid and selfish in decision making when he does get the ball.
Maybe if he wasn’t subject to a media narrative, and subject to weirdos chasing clicks and cash writing absolute rubbish about him he might look happier?
Maybe if he got less abuse and hate from his own teams so called ‘fans’ then he might be more motivated to perform? Just a thought.

Always the victim. The "abuse" and "hate" really only started because the chap decided running wasn't really his thing.
