To be honest I think it depends on what the opinion is based on. If it's watching a player play football that's fair game, we all have opinions. I had opinions about Fellaini when I heard we were in for him and I hoped that my opinions were wrong then.

But if it's the price tag that is the basis of the opinion then that's getting it the wrong way round. All over this forum we've got people bemoaning the fact that we didn't buy players like Benatia and Strootman when they were cheap and available. I'm going for the idea that we're buying him at the right moment, until proven otherwise.
I don't disagree with the latter part at all. I've said for quite a while that the only way out of this corner we've painted ourselves into is to spend big. A slight reboot is required. But, to play devil's advocate, I think a lot of people get concerned about certain fees if they believe that it'll impact our ability to strengthen other, possibly more important positions. I don't think that's necessarily invalid - though it's not where I'm at at the moment - as we all know we're being spun a yarn made entirely out of shit by Woodward about where we're willing to go financially.

I'm really keen on seeing Varela or Janko play for the first team, don't know how soon that could happen though. I think Valencia is pretty poor, looks like a passenger without any determination or bite anymore, Young looked fresh and aggressive in pre-season.

I think people got excited by Young going forward as we had most of the control in pre season matches. I pointed out his defensive frailties and panic after the Liverpool game as well during that game and nobody seemed to care and it came to fore vs Swansea as well. Anyway, Valencia is more solid in terms of keeping shape and just sheer physical presence/tackling down that side compared to him and in terms of his first touch etc.... Yeah, going forward he was ordinary but that hurts less from Wingback compared to as a Winger. He can still have games where he will burn his fullback and do a steady job otherwise.

I think LVG hasn't had a proper look at Varela and Janko and other U21s so far which is a shame. Sticking Lingard there seemed to indicate sticking with what he knows already. Again a early downside of changing managers and him joining late after the WC.

Spot on, as usual.

still a question mark over this transfer?
Seems he's confirmed it, but the guy seems a little obsessed so maybe speaking out of turn, and with Woody's record i wouldn't be surprised at all if this doesn't go through and we get him next summer instead.

Agree, but it may be that LVG did like the option, the option has agreed, but the other team will only do business when they have a replacement. As yet that may not have happened hence no announcement. It is a bit like PSG, sell one or two players and Di Maria is probably theirs. They haven't sold so it is a stalemate. Di Maria may have us as an option, but he is waiting until the last possible moment because PSG may drop their demands for their players and they sell. It only needs one event to make most transfers happen. If we get Di Maria, maybe Real Madrid get Falco and another set of events happen. Who knows. If we get what the LVG wants, it will be interesting how many fans will back track on bashing Ed. Ed doesn't choose the players, LVG does.
Possible, can't wait for deadline day to come.

Roses are Rojo
Chelsea are blue
We wanted Benatia
But feck it, you'll do

The thing is, if we play with Rooney and RVP upfront I can't see us playing nice football, it could work because of their individual class, but if there isn't enough prowess from the wing-back positions it will be very hard.

Gonna be a pretty tough start for this guy, isn't it? He'll be pretty much straight into the first team in a totally new league. It's a big step up in class. We best be patient as it wouldn't be at all surprising if he looks out of his depth at first...

I dunno, i'd consider the world cup final and Germany a much bigger test than Sunderland.

Marcos Rojo is a red, is a red, Marcos Rojo is a red, is a red, so just rename that fecking thread, fecking thread.

In 2006 I'd have considered the Champions league final to be a bigger test than crappy Man City but Evra still struggled... :p

Hope to see this in the near future...

Can someone post text, not just twitter thingy? Google is playing with me again, motherfukcer is trolling and I can't see it :(

Kind of feels like we just threw Nani in as a makeweight.

Like, "Sorry about the mess then, how about Ando? No? Mmmmaybe Nani? Yeah? Wages...what wages...?"

I am pretty sure Valencia can do a Solid job right side in that role. Young on the left is more unconvincing defensively, though there's James as well who is more unconvincing going forward. Varela did pretty well playing as a Wing back in this system on the left for the U21s last week too and deserves a go at some stage (weird Lingard is playing RWB ahead of him).

Anyway, if we control the match in midfield and defense and our structured as a team then the Wingbacks have to contribute more in attack than defense anyway. For that we have enough options. We can upgrade and it would be good but not as essential as a Midfield signing.

I think by playing Lingard instead of "proved" James or another defensively solid wingback option - Varela, the manager showed that he really wants to attack and require some goal threat from these players. But Varela is solid going forward as well, hope he gets the chance he deserves, looks like he is going to be played on both sides for reserves in order to cover both wingback positions in the future like it was made with Fabio.
And I agree with you even if we have quality in wingback positions we desperately need a midfielder. Fans were calling for a creative midfielder we have already in herrera but achilles heel of our midfield was always a defensive midfielder or holding one. Carrick turn out to be solid option but only performed on united standards in fergies last season. We were overrun by many anyway. The world class signing we were planning should be CENTRAL MIDFIELDER, than we can plan to switch to 4-3-3
