What's an "unsuspecting" club? Nobody will pay £10 million for him if they've bothered watching him for the last two years.
Hey, PSG paid 50m for David Luiz. Everything is possible. We got money for Bebe and Obertan.

Through all the pain and agony of the last few days I'd forgotten about that. Woodward/the Board/LVG/whoever is involved with transfers are slowly approaching that level of stupidity, though :(.

That, was humour.

I bet somebody would pay that, he still has four years left on his contract which helps.

Im not sure how that really helps - we have a player we dont want with time left on his contract. If I were a buying club I'd point out the fact that he had years left on big money which they would have to pay and make a dirisory offer.

What did Dier say?
He didn't say anything, that's the problem. He refused to sign a new deal and showed up with his agent and an offer from Tottenham. Then he claimed he was mistreated by the club and the president, even though there's nothing that would indicate it.

Feck me, 4 posts in three and a half hours, we're obviously looking forward to this signing.

For those wondering how good Rojo is, I can tell you he's much more reliable as a Left Back that he is as a Centre Half. That's because he is a very reckless tackler and loses his pacience very fast when facing quality strikers. He's fast, solid with his head, reasonable long range passer, but not very aware in terms of positioning.

He also has an unsettling tendency to get sent off in big matches.

We need a centre half and other than Ed pulling Hummels or Benatia out of the hat, this was always likely to be a meh signing. Can't remember watching the guy play if i'm honest and it wouldn't surprise me if that was true of most here.

So basically the alternative for Arsenal's reject is Spartak Moscow's reject?

Everyone seems to be pretty down about him but I thought he did well at the World Cup. If we actually sign him I don't think he's a bad signing at all although I must admit to not seeing him play at club level.

It also isn't the deal. Nani would be on loan.

Still don't think much of Rojo though.

I only saw him at the World Cup playing left back which I presume isn't the position we want him for, couldn't tell you how well he defended though, cause he spent most of the time in the oppositions final third.

Pretty pathetic it takes this long to sign a second rate defender from Portugal.

I remember laughing at Liverpool signing Lovren for £20m and here we are trying to buy Rojo for just £4m less, and that's if we're lucky, I wouldn't be surprised if we get coaxed into paying the buy out clause of £24m.

Thaigo Silva was once a Porto/ Dynamo Moscow reject who almost considered retirement while dealing with tuberculosis TBF.

Thiago proved himself at Fluminese for two years before moving to AC Milan (who hardly claim to be the biggest club in the world anymore). Also he nearly died with TB which is no joke.

I am not against bringing in unknown talent however at this point the defense need someone better then some unknown defender who caught the headlines by playing 1 good season in a third rated league especially since Woody had been rambling about how rich our club is and how much money it can spend.

Well Rojo has been performing at a good level for Sporting which is definitely a step above Fluminese. And he was an internal cog of the final reaching Argentina side who has almost 30 caps albeit in his secondary position while Thiago had none at a similar age. Being unsuccessful at a younger age in no slight against him and doing that would be rather myopic. Plenty of footballers have a slightly delayed maturation period. Hell Benatia couldn't cut it at Marseille, was loaned out to Lorient and Tours before being transferred to Ligue 2 Clermont. Yet now he's one of the best central defenders around.

As said I wouldn't have minded an unknown talent in other areas but the defense need a leader, someone with top quality who can guide the likes of Smalling and Jones to become better players. Ending up with a one season wonder such as Rojo is pretty disappointing and doesn't reflect the mentality of a club who claim to be the biggest club in the world.

Fair enough can't really disagree with that. But going by recent media reports we are targeting atleast 2 defenders so Rojo + someone like Bentia could be a plausible turn of events.

If we do get Benatia and Rojo then things would make sense. However I much doubt it.

To be fair Id rather have Rojo then Vermealen.

The vast majority of you have seen next to nothing of him, so can't possibly know if it'll be a good deal or not.

Don't forget we watched a lot of Sporting Lisbon games last season, apparently watching Carvalho, Mark Red here could have caught the eye too.

If we sign just Rojo it will be massively underwhelming, but his signature coupled with Benatia's and it's a good addition. We need top quality in defence, but we also need more depth for LB and arguably centre back, so you could understand signing Rojo in that event, whereas merely signing the Argentinian as a first choice centre back for the forthcoming season is like accepting our plight and mediocrity.

This is Fellaini all over again..
Last season Fabregas,Gundogan,Kroos but we ended up getting fecking Fellaini..
Fast forward one year and no Hummels or anyone who is anyone... Rojo!! Even his name sounds like a childs toy..

Interestingly enough, in Argentinian, Marcos Rojo means Manchester Red.

to be fair he does look like a SAF's signing. Rojo, Bebe, Nani, Mame.

How much of him have you seen to call him that? @Sly rates him highly and he is a Sporting fan who watches them every week. Pretty sure you are talking out of your arse here in his assessment.

Ando!! Don´t forget him!

I think that's more Martin Ferguson's deal to be honest. According to him Ando is better then Wayne Rooney. What a great chief scout, it clear that he got the job because he purely deserved it.

Are you sure about that? didn't get that impression myself when reading Sly's posts.

The Red Devils have agreed to include Portuguese winger Nani in their bid to sign the Argentina international.

Manchester United has agreed to a 20 million euro deal for Sporting defender Marcos Rojo, with Nani going the other way on a season-long loan, Goal UK reports.
Rojo will move to Old Trafford after extensive negotiations between the two clubs, against the backdrop of the Argentina defender holding out before apologizing to his teammates and supporters.

With United covering the majority of Nani's salary — one of the highest at the Premier League club — the deal is something of a triumph for Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho.

He had refused to accept United's initial 20 million euro offer for Rojo, drawing the ire of both the player and Doyen Sports, an investment fund that owns 75 percent of the Argentine's economic rights.

With Sporting contractually obliged to pay 20 percent of any fee over 5 million euros for Rojo to his former club Spartak Moscow, and 75 percent of the income going to Doyen, a 20 million euro sale would have effectively seen the World Cup finalist leave for free.

I think he'd be a good addition to the squad. With our injury prone defenders it's good to get someone in who would be willing to sit a few games out and wouldn't really be feeling under pressure if he'd be starting.

In bringing Nani back to the club where the forward began his professional career, De Carvalho has landed one of Portugal's most prominent footballers at a minimal salary cost to Sporting.

De Carvalho was determined to play hardball with Rojo's agents after the player refused to train with the club in order to help push through a move to Old Trafford. Rojo apologised for his behavior in an interview with the club's television channel Sunday, though it is understood it is partly designed to facilitate the transfer.

"It was all a misunderstanding, I was a hothead," he said. "I'm sorry for what happened because I feel that I was unprofessional.

"I want to tell the people that I didn’t behave correctly, but I’m am very fond of this club. They are the ones that will decide my career, and I hope it will be the best both for me and the club. But I want to stress that I’m very happy at the club, and I like the way I’m treated and the care they give me."

The deal underlines United's desperation to provide Louis van Gaal with personnel capable of playing the high-risk 3-5-2 formation the new manager is attempting to introduce at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman began his first Premier League campaign with just three experienced center backs and one international left back in his squad, duly falling to Saturday's 2-1 home loss to Swansea City.

Rojo, 24, is comfortable operating as one of the three center backs in a 3-5-2 or as the left wing back. During his two season at Sporting he was used primarily as a central defender.

Nani has four years remaining on the highly lucrative contract United awarded him early last summer. Though then-manager David Moyes considered persuading the Portugal international to remain with the club as a key element in structuring his squad, the pair rapidly fell out and Nani rarely made the first XI in subsequent months.

Liverpool has made Portugal Under-21 international Tiago Ilori available for loan as it attempts to rebalance its squad for the new season. Ilori, an initial 7.5 million euro signing from Sporting last summer, has yet to start a game for the Reds but had expected to be a part of Brendan Rodgers' first-team plans this season.

His position, though, has been complicated by Kolo Toure's refusal to accept a transfer to Trabzonspor, leading Liverpool to seek another developmental loan move. While Bordeaux is interested in Ilori, he would prefer a switch to another Premier League side.
