Why are people believing this as something any different to all the other BS rumours?

20m € seems way too much, though there are not that many other options out there. Left-footed CBs on a decent level are pretty rare. Another option would be Martinez from Sociedad, but the Spaniards are keen on the release clause (30m €) with Barcelona interested. Laporte from Bilbao would be another option, but again, certainly not cheaper.

Bottom line: Whoever we're pursuing as left-footed CB, it won't be cheap. Either we pay the price or we look for a right-footed CB rather than a left-footed one. Though that won't be much cheaper.

Well, I'd say both Martinez and Laporte are worth the extra money, because the're far better than Rojo from what I've seen of all 3 despite both being younger.

Because no one with Barca, Marid, Chelsea, City, Paris or Monaco in their name want him... and he'd help make up numbers in our most deficient area.

Haven't seen much of him besides his WC performances (which didn't particularly impress me at all).

Judging purely by what I'm reading online (and in the full knowledge that half of these opinions are from people who've probably seen even less of him than I have) I think it's fair to say this would be a less than stellar signing.

However, consider: A) A lot of us (me included) were unhappy at the idea of signing an injury prone defender in Vermaelen, so surely this guy is bound to be an improvement? B) We are desperately short of number at the back, C) we are clearly struggling to attract the highest quality players anyway, D) time is running out and E) I can't think of that many available alternatives.

So not ideal but, at this stage, probably necessary?

It is because;

1 - A realistic target
2 - The other big teams are not interested
3 - English press havent got a clue about it (Herrera and Shaw were done out of nowhere)
4 - The whole Instagram following then unfollowing thing he did last week.
5 - Fits the profile of players both LVG likes and United recently have been buying - Up and comers.
6 - We wanted a Left footed CB that can potentially play LB if needed,

From what I remember of him at the World Cup, he looked to be strong but a little clumsy and all in all an okay left back. Didn't look like someone who start ahead of any of our defenders. Blind was much more impressive.

Martinez isn't far better at all & Rojo's had a better season. Would much rather have Laporte though, great player.

He's mainly a CB though, played there 25-ish games for Sporting this season. So we'd sign him as left-sided CB and as backup LB in a 4-3-3.

Martinez is playing in a far superior league to Rojo and seems far calmer at the back also.

Not for €30M.

True, if we're getting ripped off then that changes things.

However, I'd suggest that we've made it very easy for clubs to hold us to ransom by leaving so much necessary business until this late in the transfer window.

I suspect any signings we make at this stage are bound to be overpriced. That's the cost of desperation.

I thought he was very good going forward during the World Cup. I am surprised that he's more of a centre-back. Maybe this is our first successful Argentine signing which doesn't end sour? :nervous:

Would probably make more sense than Blind as Rojo is a natural CB, the position we're probably most desperate to strengthen. The fact that he can cover LB is probably a bonus.

Playing in a superior league doesn't equate to being a better player. Martinez has had a very average season.

I think he trained but was really rubbish at it.

Evra wasn't a barrel of laughs either from what I remember.

 I would pay to see Berbatov trying to be as rubbish as possible. He musts be good at it.

Fair enough, maybe still not quite good enough for us, his tackling does sometimes look suspect, but I'd still take him ahead of Rojo. Definitely superior in his distribution. And though playing in a superior league doesn't always equate to a better player, playing in a poorer league often gives the impression of a player being better than they are. I really don't like the look of Rojo, Martinez at least looks calm in defence. No doubt I'd rather Laporte though, especially considering his age.

Yeah what impressed me most were bid driving runs and strength.

He could become a great player but essentially he's had one good season & been hyped up because he was linked to Barca & PSG. San Jose looked as good as him last year but nobody would ever call him a great player. Aurtenetxe played at a similar level at the same age but hasn't seemed to progress all that much.

Because San Jose is 25, age is obviously going to be factored in when talking about players. Laporte is obviously not at the highest level yet but for someone who's just turned 20 he's great.

So he has the potential to be a great player. I was confused because in your first post you called him a "great player", which he's not.
I suspect we may mean the same thing though & i'm just being pedantic.

Im not gunna lie and pretend ive followed his entire career. I was very impressed by him at the world cup however. would be a brilliant addition at 15m euro and would bring ridiculous athleticism to our central defence, not to mention pace!

Why are people believing this as something any different to all the other BS rumours?

Because it's an unspectacular signing and people expect us to make these sort of signings rather than the Di Maria, Vidal and Benatia types. He also has a release clause apparently.

He fits a back three, left footed and can be cover for Shaw at LB. I didn't think he was anything special at the WC, but I've never seen him play for his club, so who knows.

Am i missing something?? people talking as if we have signed him??

Genuine question, as i have been in work... Have we signed him?

Apparently we've bid 16m (or 20m euros) but that's their asking price so it'll probably be a formality from here on in.

Serious portuguese sources said that we made an offer or two.

Blind had an excellent game against Spain at left back but after that he faded. Blind's best position is left back or central midfield, not centre-back.

OK... Cool

Decent enough player from what i saw at the WC. Not Hummels or Benatia that people were hoping for but he is good enough to help us qualify for the champs league. Then we will have a more realistic chance at signing players of that ilk.

I'm sorry but this transfer just seems like utter bollocks like all the rumours. Who reliable is reporting it?

Seems that people are just believing it because he isn't a worldbeater. When somebody has probably noticed a left sided centre back and decided to make up that we want him.

Front page of 2 different Portuguese newspapers, one of which Sly said is usually reliable. It'd be a strange rumour for them to make up simultaneously. Clearly something in it.

I'd be happy with Rojo. Looked very composed for Argentina at the World Cup. Only thing missing is experience, but that doesn't bother me too much.

Just browsing the interweb and the general consensus appears to be front page of Portuguese paper equates to done dealio.
