Marco Reus

Hmm 'flat out rejected' is a bit strong. It was a combination of Reus thinking he wouldn't get as much game time at Bayern than Dortmund and him being a Dortmund fan. Also I believe he said that Gotze was a reason he joined Dortmund as well, although that quote could have been made up.

A part of me wants him to stay at Dortmund regardless. I don't want to see them continuously lose their best players, they're a lovely side and a great club.

I dont think so, I think I read somewhere (when the Dortmund transfer happened) that he flat out rejected Bayern and said he'd never sign for them.

He chose Dortmund over Bayern back then but he didn't say anything against Bayern. Two years from now Ribery will be 32 (and Robben 31) so that might be the perfect timing for him to come in as a replacement. Not sure if Pep would want him though, since he might lack the technique for extreme possession football.

I'd love to get Reus and Gundogan, that would complete our team. If Dortmund would only sell us one, then I'd take Reus and get Herrera.

He never said that. He thought about moving to Bayern for a while, negotiations defenitely took place between Bayern and his agent/him. I still believe that Puma played a really important part in him signing for Dortmund. They tried to get back into the game for a while, signed a longterm deal with Dortmund at the same time as Reus signed for Dortmund and he then also became all of a sudden the new face of the Puma campaign. I doubt they want to loose Reus to Bayern (and Adidas), that's why I wouldn't be surprised if Dortmund actually found a way to keep him longterm with Puma sweetening the deal for him, at least as long as Dortmund continues their great work. Of course, a lot can happen in the next 2 years, but for now, I doubt Reus will ever move to Bayern.

Ahh cheers for clearing that up... I was typing off of vague memories. I hope he doesnt go Bayern though...

United need to do what other teams do for players if they want the best. Ozil joined Arsenal because they offered him mega bucks - even in comparison to tidy wages in Madrid, likewise Aguero (and others) at Man City.

Not all players are purely motivated by money, but offering someone double his salary along with a move to a top European League and regular chance of winning trophies will be tempting. It may not be enough but you're in with a chance.

Some players are like that, but when you're on pretty good wages, at one of the best teams in the world, at arguably the best league in the world right now, playing for your home town club and the club you supported as a boy, in front of 80k people every game, why would anyone want to leave? Gotze left because he was a Bayern fan growing up and was born there, but Reus was born in Dortmund, started in Dortmunds youth team, and is now one of the best players in the world there probably. Can't see him wanting to leave any time soon, unless Dortmund fall off randomly.

I don't think 60k for a player of his calibre is good wages when we can offer him 80-90. I dint think he'd do too much thinking.

Fans are far to romantic about this sort of thing in my opinion. Gotze, will have looked at Guardiola moving to a massive club and considered the success they're likely to have and wanted to get in on that. They are, after all professionals.

Reus may love playing for Dortmund - but football is a short career, and it could all be over in a second. People grow up, get married, have families and as in everyone's life, money suddenly becomes a major factor. Agents will be telling their players one thing - move while you're hot property.

If someone offers to double your wages, and pass you a few million signing on fee then you consider it. If he's on £60k and United offer to pay him £120k he'll consider it - who wouldn't? It may not be enough, he may be settled, but an opportunity like that may not come along again.

Since when did that lanky streak of piss become an ITK? Unfortunately this is likely how it will end up

He was spot on about Ozil and Gotze over the summer, one of the more reliable people on twitter imo.

I reckon he just knows some guy at Bild who feeds him information. In any case his tweet sounds more like a personal prediction than insider knowledge.

If his confident evidence is he wants to join his mate.. I wouldn't pay it any mind. He'll fit in well at United though if it was to happen. Reminds me of A Beckham if he had blistering pace.

There's no evidence to suggest that Manchester United can complete such a transfer. We haven't, to our knowledge, made a concrete offer of 30 million or over since 2008 and are competing against club's that have more money, more ambition in the market, and the tendency to pay hefty agents fees.

I like Reus - albeit he was terrible against Arsenal - but I don't think there's any chance of him playing at United.

Weren't we on the verge of signing Lucas last summer, arguably the most wanted Brazilian seeing as it was obvious Neymar was going to Real or Barca? And his fee was roughly £30 million, I think.

Maybe. What was the actual fee, do you know? I really don't know. I know it was around the 30 million euros mark. But either way, he didn't come.

Though a deal, worth an initial €40 million with up to €5 million in bonuses, was struck last summer ..."Choosing PSG is a great challenge. Leonardo helped me a lot in making the decision."
- from ESPN.

We had everything agreed and he was set to fly to Manchester to sign the contract, but in the last few hours he got a call from Leonardo and signed for PSG for double the wages. I'm pretty sure that both clubs paid the same transfer fee, which was his buyout clause, but he signed for them because of the wage difference. There was nothing we could really do, as we weren't going to break our wage structure.

We could certainly afford a £30million buy out clause. We paid near that for Fellaini just a few months ago, whilst also bidding for other players indicating that the transfer budget is far higher.

I think Sir Alex said it was the agent fee's that were the problem, or maybe that was Hazard. On the fee though I'm pretty sure we were willing to bid around 35m for both Hazard and Lucas, but the wages/agent fees ended up being the problem. I think Lucas' agent wanted around 8m or so.

The Gundogan and Reus rumours are obvious. Almost every club with some sort of reputation/money will be tracking those two but it doesn't mean anything.

Not entirely sure why a recent CL finalist at his boyhood club would leave in the near future for a team in major transition, but let the rumour mill go on.

I would throw money at Dortmund for Reus and Gundogan. Class acts, the pair of em.

Maybe because this side in transition happens to be the Premier League Champions and "Manchester United" I'm sure it wont puzzle too many people.

Dortmund is as much in transition as United, if not more. And it'll continue until they establish themselves as a top club in Europe, which will take a few more years. Transition is never over when you have to replace one of your key players every summer, it's obvious that they changed their style to suit the new players again this season, and with Lewandowski definitely leaving, they will again next season. United will keep the key players if they want to and build around that strong core and have most likely a really strong team again in 2 or 3 years. I'd understand if a world class player wants that certainty after a few years. Also a single CL final doesn't mean a lot, if the club doesn't turn it into constant success in Europe. I really hope (and believe) that Klopp can make it work and Dortmund will continue their good work, but it's still really difficult to convince a player of his quality to stay for the journey instead of earning more money at a bigger club with a better chance of winning the CL.

Still, if it's true that the release clause can't be triggered before 2015, he won't leave anyway. So the whole discussion is more interesting next winter, if Reus didn't extend his contract until then.

James Ducker was on MUTV talking about this earlier, and looked for all the world to me like he'd pulled the story out of his arse and was making it up as he went along. Blamed his editor on the "Kagawa flop" headline too.

Bullshitter, for me.

For what it's worth:

WTF:lol:. I have not heard of Fjortoft since the mid 90's.

What does Fjortoft have to do with any transfer for Reus? I doubt we will sign Reus but that's so random it sounds about as credible as the average CAF ITK.
