 Remember when Ten Hag said it would take him months to get up to speed?

Then he didn't play him at all because it turned out he wanted to keep McTomminay and Amrabat?

He was very obviously undercooked earlier in the season. Huge difference between earlier performances and what we saw today. We don’t need to find a reason to blame Ten Haag for absolutely everything.

He's hardly played! Ten Hag didn't fancy him, that was the only issue.
This is his 11th game and 8th start.

You don't have to carry on dreaming up new reasons to slag Ten Hag off. He's gone now, he can't hurt you anymore.

I think people also forget EtH did/said exactly the same about Casemiro in his first season where it took him 5 or 6 weeks to get a regular spot and 'up to speed' and people complained about him not being used. When he was fit enough he was in the team though.

Why is this thread still open? I thought it was conclusively decided after a few sub appearances that he was a terrible waste of money and a poor ma's Fred.

He's a beast. Looking forward to seeing him get even better under Anorim hopefully.

He isn't half the player Keane was. He's more of a Kante. Can do the defensive stuff, but Keane could do everything.
Indeed he's not but no one said he was, they said the closest ,which is a sad indictment of some of the players who have played for us in the last decade +

It really is. I understand the sentiment because Ugarte is a bit of a warrior. There aren't many Roy Keane's around though. Ugarte can still be a huge player for us without being all that close to Roy Keane.

He must be a nightmare to play against. Lovely to see.

Really curious to see if Mainoo can fight back into the first XI when fit again.

Barely noticed him which is perfect for a player in his position. Swept up any danger and got the ball moving forward again without any fuss.

Absolute beast today. Not only did he constantly break up play to help us keep Leicester pinned back but he played that superb pass to Garnacho too.

Impressive. Reminds me more of Diego Simeone than Keane or Kante, who both had more of a range of skills than Ugarte. - I’m happy enough with someone who wins and recycles the ball to a high level.

Don't think you watched then

I know what your overall point was but you're underselling him.

He was incredible today. I thought we looked really tough in midfield and difficult to get through. He and Casemiro look like the defensive shield and midfield steel that we've been talking about needing for years. Brilliant.

Yep, he's a bit like Fred (Kante was a beast and still gets underrated imo - this guy is nowhere close)

Some areas where he's better - not as erratic in passing, decent carrying, stronger so he isn't as easily shrugged off but a touch slower and probably can't put in a shift like Fred used to.

Not sure what mother's have to do with it.

But Fred was so bad, wouldn't take much to be better than that clown.

I wonder if we'll make Casemiro the central CB. That's the only way we can see them together in a back three system.

Put a metronomic passer next to him and we've got ourselves a midfield. Probably his best performance yet today.

So refreshing just to see someone getting back into shape with energy. Those kind of basics have been missing from our midfield for a long while. And he capped it off with some good work on the ball too. Nice to see him getting up to speed.

The issue is that many believe, myself included, is that 'getting up to speed' is to actually play games. We are talking about fully grown and seasoned adult professionals, not youth prospects. Ugarte has started and played in all of Ruud's 4 games in charge. No one can convince me that ETH's 'gentle' handling i.e playing him very sporadically has helped as much as starting the last 4 games.

Under ETH, just like we've seen with Casemiro, Amrabat, Amad etc, they were in and out of the team for lesser players out of form and in positions (Mazraoui at the 10 is just the most recent example) with little rhyme or reason.

ETH absolutely deserves criticism for his inconsistent handling of everything from tactics, player selection, formations, subs etc. He inherited bit of a mess, steered the ship and had a good intentioned approach, along with winning two trophies but his lack of appropriate methods towards it all is also his own fault.

Ten Hag didn't play him much in the league since he was eligible (Ugarte was signed bit late so he was only eligible from Southampton and onward), and thank God the new management overruled him in the players to keep, sell, or bring in, that's what I hope from INEOS now, to ensure only the right players will be signed and not just do whatever the manager or head coach says, and obviously not every signing will succeed but with this approach we will hopefully get more hits and less misses.

Looking better and better and looks to have no trouble getting up to speed in England.
My only concern is that certain refs might yellow card him early in a game and that could restrict him but that is his game and his strength.

First time in a very long time, actually witnessing a midfielder for United who’s hard working, mobile, with a decent passing range and actually inspired those around him. Reminiscent of an older Keane type of performance. I wonder how much more he’s got to show?
