Manuel Neuer

Summary:
- I know how the fans feel because at the age of 10 I also used to get angry with professional footballers when they moved because I wouldn't understand them
- now I'm a professional footballer and have a different point of view
- I didn't boo Jens Lehmann either (mad Jens moved to Schalke's arch rivals Dortmund) because I was still a fan of his although he moved to yellow-green (Dortmund's colours)
- but I'm well aware of the fact some fans will get angry
- I spoke with representatives of the fans because I wanted to be honest towards the fans, I wanted to explain myself and it was neither easy for them nor for me
---> after having said that he gets a bit teary

Yellow-black.

I can fully understand Neuer's decision - at Bayern, he will not only be guaranteed Champions' League football in his career, but, he will also be Germany's number one goalkeeper for the next years.

Why would he not be Germany's number one at United?

Hen can achieve both things at lots of clubs surely?

German coaches tend to neglect German players who play abroad. Of course not always, but at times. I remember Hinkel having a decent season at Celtic and despite not having any real other options, Jogi Löw still opted for someone else at that time.

Add to that Manchester United isn't really seen as a much bigger club than Bayern in Germany. With Real or Barcelona it might have been another story. Bayern are Germany's biggest club, they are regarded as a top club, they pay royal wages and Neuer will be able to take over Kahn's interrupted legacy. Add on top of that Neuer's girlfriend to the mix - she's from Munich.

That isn't the point.

The implication was that only at Bayern will he be able to fulful those two objectives.

Ballack kept his place when at Chelsea and I bet Ozil will be fine too.

There wasn't an alternative to Ballack at that time and Özil is generally seen as Germany's most gifted young midfielder.

With goalies, a coach has more choice and there's no doubt that an employment at Bayern is the best way to secure yourself a first team start for the national team.

I don't think this was Neuer's main motivation - he simply wanted to go to a top club and that's Bayern in Germany - but it is nevertheless still a factor.

Well he isn't very confident then. Germany will struggle going forward if they keep this increasing level of insularity.

Neuer is easily the best German keeper. And most likely Hinkel was ignored because... Well exactly because he was playing in Scotland, not because he wasnt playing in Germany. The premier league might not be seen as better than bundasliga, but you can guarantee that SPL is seen as many levels lower than bundasliga. Its nowhere near the same thing

An alternative to Ballack?

He's the best German player of his generation. Any manger worth his salt would make sure he was the first name on the team sheet.

Never mind Rudi Völler, Lothar Matthäus and Jürgen Klinsmann. You're talking a bit of shite here about German players who play abroad by referencing lesser talents. Bayern has a lot of pull and money so naturally they snap up most of the best players, but the top Germans sometimes go abroad and when they do they certainly don't disappear from the Die Mannschaft.

..Hässler, Reuter, Bierhoff, Schuster, Rummenigge, Babbel, Möller, Kohler, Brehme..

A lot of great Germans have played abroad. Did it really hurt their chances with the national team so much?

No, but playing for Bayern will get you still more attention from the national coach than even playing for Barcelona.

That said, I don' think it was necessarily Neuer's primary motivation for a move to Bayern (as I've already said). But why would he come to Manchester United? United isn't in the same bracket as Barca or Real for most Germans and particularly as a goalie you can have a successful and reputable career at Bayern. Buffon and Kahn are/were the most famous and best goalies of their generation and neither of them played in Spain or England.

But this debate is a bit redundant anyway as we were probably never interested in him. I can't see Fergie going for a hot German talent and splashing 18-22 million euros for him.

We were always more likely to go for the Taibis of this world.

De Gea at 20m euros isn't much different though, is it?

Well, Neuer does seem to be the safer bet, being five years older and having played in the CL and in the World Cup. When we look back in a few years, though, who knows. Assuming we even sign De Gea.

Yeah, and personally Neuer has always been my first choice. But I was responding to Lailani's point about Fergie wouldn't spend 18-22m on a GK, and that we'll go for a Taibi.

Fair enough, although I really don't think we'll be going for another Taibi. We'll see.

Raul talking in today's Guardian.

[The goalkeeper Manuel] Neuer is very, very good. I didn't know much about him but he's incredible. You should see him in training – his saves, throwing a ball half the length of the pitch, everything. He might even be more complete than [Iker] Casillas. And he's only 25. It's pity for United because he would have been perfect for them, but people say he's going to Bayern.

Real quote? When/Where's that from?

Daily Star: Simply The Best 7 Days A Week :: Football :: Sir Alex Ferguson: I fancy a Real test

They've replaced the article with a video that doesn't work in my region now I see. He was talking about Schalke, Raul and Neuer.

Found the original article posted on other forums before it got taken down on the daily star website:

SIR ALEX FERGUSON can see it now – Manchester United v Real Madrid in the dream Champions League Final at Wembley.

Or Fergie against Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo, the star he reluctantly sold to Real for a world-record £80million.

The United boss admits he can’t afford to look too far ahead as his team have a tough semi-final to get through against Schalke, with the first leg in Germany on Tuesday.

And Mourinho’s Madrid start second favourites to Spanish rivals Barcelona in the other semi.

But Fergie, in assessing that battle of Spain tie, admitted: “From the moment the draw was made, I thought Real had a big chance, I really did.

“I think that five-nil defeat Real suffered against Barcelona would have hurt *Mourinho deeply and he won’t be getting beaten like that again, that’s for sure.

“Since then, Real have played Barcelona twice – drawing one and winning the other. For that match, the Copa del Rey Final, he put Pepe – normally a centre-back – in midfield and they really got wired in to Barcelona.

“Ronaldo’s header to win the game was fantastic but I have seen him do that before. It was a little similar to the one he scored for us against Roma in Italy.

“I thought maybe the goalkeeper could have done better, but the spring and the *power he got – it came from the spine, not the neck.

“He was a threat all night, running behind them. I’m not sure it’s a case of relishing playing against him in the final but the best way to look at it is that I hope we are there.

“Then we can look at it and decide how we feel. I don’t want to be complacent – we want to get to the final first.”

And on the big debate over who is the better player – Ronaldo or Barcelona’s Lionel Messi – Fergie said: “They are two fantastic players. I obviously have all my loyalties with Ronaldo, in that I know his qualities. He’s got two great feet and is great in the air, too. He’s an unbelievable player – fantastic.

“Messi is a different type of player all together but equally he brings fantastic *qualities to a football match, so I wouldn’t go beyond that.”

But Fergie knows it will be difficult against Schalke – as it has been in the past for United against German teams.

The United boss said: “There have been different circumstances. We’ve not had a great record against Bayern Munich from the 1999 season when we drew with them twice in the group games and beat them in the final.

“We were very unlucky against Bayer Leverkusen, we should have seen them off and we were very unlucky again against Borussia Dortmund.

“But you can’t always be so unlucky and sometimes it will change for you. We are going into this game with far more experience than we have had in previous years and our away record in the last few years has been terrific.

“We’ve seen videos of *Schalke and I went to watch them in the second leg against Inter Milan. It’s not going to be an easy game but it’s not going to be easy for them, either!

“They’ve got Raul, who has always been a player with good *intelligence and a fantastic goal record. He’s got 71 Champions League goals – bloody hell! I hope it stays that way for the next few weeks.

“And in Manuel Neuer, they’ve a brilliant goalkeeper. I think he is going to Bayern Munich. He has a presence about him. He controls the box and if you hang the ball up near him on crosses, you’re wasting your time.

“German teams have always had resilience and determination. They are good pros and I am sure we’ll see that. We know they are the principles we can expect that won’t change.”

Yep sounds like Fergie rates him very highly but just doesnt think we could get him. What a shame

Ah yeah, remember that quote.

Well, I know he's going to Bayern. But I can't help but hope he changes his mind if Bayern don't get in the Champions League and is impressed when he comes to OT and speaks to Fergie. Ya never know........
