Manuel Neuer

How much did Klose and Van Buyten cost? Wiki has no details. Those are 2 of the 4 other transfers from bundasliga clubs that I saw with a quick scan. Ivica Olic and Hamit Altintop were both free.

I dont know the fees but I'm willing to bet they were both very reasonable prices.

Of course there's Gomez as you mentioned as well.

Klose left for an undisclosed transfer fee, estimated to be around €12 M, dependent on his achievements with Bayern. But he had only one year left to his contract left.

As for Gomez, as I said, whilst he's a good player, €30 M aren't exactly peanuts for him and a murmor went through the Bundesliga when the fee became known. Hoeneß even had to defend himself for spilling out that much money.

The fees in the Bundesliga are lower, but the individual class of the players is often lower and Bayern doesn't face much rivalry from other clubs. If you are Cologne or Bremen and have a very good player in your ranks, there's almost only one club you can offer that player to - Bayern. Other clubs won't be able to attract him, won't be able to pay him his dream wages and won't be able to pay a huge transfer fee.

What ever happened to him? I remember him being amazing during Euro 2008.

Podolski's a strange one - he was still too young when he went to Bayern (21 years young) and couldn't cope with the immense amount of pressure at the club.

He has had his best season since returning to Cologne; scored 12 and set up 7 goals in 29 matches this year.

He's had a mixed season though and the reviews at the beginning of the season weren't only good. It's also easy to look decent in a team like Cologne.

At Bayern, Podolski missed the homely atmosphere and couldn't cope with the pressure and needed patience.

Now he's in Cologne and although he has certainly a better season than he's ever had at Bayern (well, given that he rarely got any time on the pitch there this doesn't come as a surprise) he seems frustrated. Cologne are only six points away from relegation and generally not a club to go when you are in your mid-twenties and have some ambition left.

I still think that Cologne despite being his home club and town wasn't the right choice for him. He should have taken one step back, not two steps. Dortmund, Hamburg and Bremen were more than happy to take him and he should have accepted one of their offers.

Cologne has done him one favour though and I'm more than happy to admit that I was wrong: They gave him the captaincy and whilst many (me included) thought they were putting too much pressure on him, it actually gave him the possibility to grow and take responsibility.

Although podolski never coped with the pressure at bayern, everytime he pulled on the national team jersey he performed. Thats a funny one

Bayern got Ballack on the cheap in 2002. It was under £10m if memory serves.
In spite of Real Madrid's interest, Ballack decided to sign with Bayern Munich in a €12.9 million deal.

Talks in the media suggest that Schalke have identified Hannover and our former goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler as Neuer's possible replacement.

Of course they buy the best players from other German clubs. But it's not like they buy excellent talent and pay alms. When was the last time they bought an excellent player from a German club and paid extremely low fees?

Players like Lahm or Hummels are from their youth ranks and were only loaned out.

Hummels was sold...

They also got Ze Roberto as well for the same fee at the same time. I remember being :wenger: seeing Leverkusen sell them so cheaply to their biggest rivals at the time the summer after being in the CL final.

Lucio came two years later. How much was he?

I was surprised by Zieler's level of quality the last time I watched him - tall, comfortable on crosses and he had this class about him.

Why exactly did he leave or was he not rated by the staff?
I have never known why we let him go. Posters like Datura probably know why. I've always liked what I've seen when I've watched him play. Even for Germany at youth level. So I was kinda surprised we let him go.

Zieler was an absolute legend on FM 07. Shame we let him go. FM rarely goes wrong.

Hummels was sold...

Alright, but he was loaned out first.

Jaap, do you think neuer is heading to bayern? Seems the most likely destination but there's still hope it's us

I'm not Jaap but there's no hope that Neuer will come to us. But I have not much hope that anyone will believe this until the next transfer window closes.

It was the same with Özil. BILD and other reliable German sources had already reported that Özil would either stay at Bremen or go to Madrid but many weeks after that English media were still trying to paint a move to United as a real possibility when it was only a red herring.

And a nice quote from last month:
For national keeper Manuel Neuer from Schalke a move abroad doesn't have any priority. "I can travel abroad twice a year, in the winter and summer holidays", Neuer told 'kicker'.

"Does a footballer need to play abroad? There are players that think so. I don't think so", the 24-year-old goalkeeper said.

Manuel Neuer has come out and said that he has made a decision (to join Bayern) - it's up to Schalke and Bayern to agree a fee now.

He'll head to Bayern, pretty sure of that. It is going to be in a region of around 20m Euros.

Thats ok Lalliani, thanks for your input. You had banned as your tagline so I thought there wasnt much point of asking you! Im disappointed as I thought Neuer would really be a star for us, like Ballack could have been. I'll wait for a German to make a first team spot at United then :D

There`s more chance Edwin stays another year at Old Trafford than Neuer joins Manchester United.

99%: He goes to Bayern Munich
1%: He stays at Schalke

Give me a second, Im just going to PM Gillespie...

Ah I see, I know its been printed he has made a choice, just wasnt sure what the rumblings were around the country. Should be interesting to see the Bayern faithfuls reaction, considering what it was last time he came.

My tagline is an incredibly hilarious, smart joke, courtesy of my favourite person in the world. :D

No problem, I just wanted to clarify. If there was a chance that Neuer could come to us, I would also be one of the first to be over the moon about it, I just don't think there is any realistic chance.

And for what it's worth, even if Neuer had any serious interest in us, I doubt this would be a typical Fergie transfer. Or does anybody really think that there's a realistic chance of Fergie spending 20M on a goalkeeper? I don't think so.

After Edwin's departure, I can see us ending up with the Taibis of this world.

You don't think we will? I don't think the rumours of De Gea are false.

And what about the Bayern fans? Last I saw they held up pieces of paper at a home game that read "We don't want Neuer" (or similar). Was that the majority or minority?

Bayern fans want one thing: Winning.

Most Bayern fans say they don't want Neuer as he is not only a Schalke player but also a Schalke fan. Schalke have an incredibly bad reputation in Germany, they are considered to be the lowest of the low.

Bayern fans make some noises now, but they will be more than happy if Hoeneß buys Neuer. This is a club that is used to douche-bags like Frank Ribery and Van Buyten, they will get over it and Uli Hoeneß wouldn't let any fans stop him from his dream transfer anyway. I'm sure they will love their early Christmas toy.

Also, according to Neuer he has already made a deal with a club. Does anybody really think we have made a secret deal with him? Again, I don't think so.

OK, thanks for that.

Re: your last point, I don't think many United fans really believe we still have a chance with Neuer, no. I'd like to think there is some miracle about to happen and Fergie convinces him to come but that's only because he's been my personal choice to replace VDS for a while now. But in reality, with his quotes in the past few weeks and what yourself and the other German posters are saying, we've lost all logical hope!

Even though it looks like Neuer wont be a possibility, his comments about moving abroad are him asking whether its needed. He says he doesnt think its needed. That doesnt mean he wouldnt be open to it, does it?

Interesting situation when german players stay in their homeland, especially those who could ply their trade abroad.

Of course, its obviously attractive to stay in your comfort zone but for me shows a certain lack of ambition. If United were in for him surely thats a once in a lifetime opportunity? - especially for a goal keeper given that top clubs change their keepers rarely.

The Bundesliga is a decent league and seems to be improving, but Spain and the PL is where its at in terms of the really top level.

Maybe he doesn't understand sarcasm?

Do Germans generally believe their league is the best in the world or do they just prefer staying home?
Both

- Rudi Voeller has said a couple days ago that the Bundesliga is the best league in the world.
- Beckenbauer has said that Neuer is the best goalkeeper in the world.
- German football experts: Schalke can easily beat us, we`re not so good like Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Well that is pretty obvious isn't it? Even a 5th grader would tell you Barca and Real are better than United based on the current teams.

Barca, yes, Real? Give me a break. No wonder you got that tagline.

I was talking about the team in general. They have a lot more world class players. Our defense and GK is better. Their midfield and strike force is better. And what does my tagline have to do with what I said?

tbh, after the Bayer shit like 10 years ago when the final was apparently all but guaranteed...I don't do trust German teams, especially ones with Raul still poaching goals for them.

It was just announced on german news that Neuer is leaving Schalke at the end of the season. More to follow on a press conference later today.

Translated from his facebook:

I have told the leaders at Schalke, that I will not renew my contract. I know that this will meet with you to understand. I owe much to Schalke and the fans, but would like to think after 20 years of loyalty, the opportunity for change open. I made the decision and announce it would now. Now is the season to fully concentrate objectives of Schalke 04!

He's apparently agreed a four-year deal with Bayern, just the fee (18-20 million Euro) to be agreed.

Schalke have just announced, that Manuel Neuer will not be extending his contract (expires in 2012). Press conference this afternoon.

Shame he doesn't want to come to England. On the upside, hopefully, his mind will be distracted now for our semi-final.
