Manuel Neuer

I was hoping we'd get him as he's the best option out there IMO, oh well, back to the drawing board.

Weird that he wants to go to Bayern after all the abuse he has got from them and their fans hate him.

"Ich habe von einem Interesse von Manchester United nichts gehört. Ich möchte immer auf höchstem Niveau spielen und dass ist die Champions league. Ich möchte mich auch noch in meiner Persönlichkeit entwickeln. In einer anderen Stadt ist man auf sich alleine gestellt", sagte Neuer.
I haven't heard anything about possible interest from Manchester United. I want to play at the highest level possible, the Champions' League. I want to further develop as a person too and in a new city you're bound to be on your own.

Don't get your hopes up though, pals, he is Munich bound.

Looks genuinely gutted to leave the club

Fans are already calling him a ''Judas'' and a traitor - he announced his decision on his Facebook page also.

Very harsh. He's been with the club since he was 5 years old (20 years)! That's a similar length of time Raul was at R. Madrid, and I doubt they'd boo him.

He's given them good service and deserves a chance at a bigger club.

The contact to Bayern is confirmed, however, Schalke made it clear they wont negotiate as long as the season is running

Aww, he looks so sweet. I almost feel sorry for him now.

I wonder whether or not this'll make his position at his current club untenable between now and the end of the season and they'll drop him for the remaining few games.

Odd time to announce it now, before a big CL semi-final, isn't it? Why not wait a few weeks.

I feel sorry for Neuer, he's caught up in the middle of all this. He loves Schalke and has been there since a very young age, but is now attracting interest from all over the place. Bayern are the obvious choice, but their fans hate him and the Schalke fans will hate him if he leaves too. He's now in a bit of a catch 22 as the damage has been done and he is now certain to leave.

But why now? Why not play the 'Ronaldo' game and just piss off at the end. I genuinely do not get the timing of this. It fecks over the club as it now as a goalkeeper playing knowing he is despised by the fans and possibly team mates.

The timing seems completely arse about face. Handled in the worst possible way. I don't get who gains from this announcement. Bayern won't get him any sooner.

Schalke will gain. They'll receive 20m Euros and have time to look for a new keeper.

I agree. Bizarre timing. Must have been talks over a new contract that didn't go to plan and went overly public, hence the announcement to clear the air. Schalke are coming up to the biggest game in the last 4 or 5 years and this is an unnecessary distraction.

No they'll gain from the transfer. They won't get their money any sooner because he's announced he is leaving. If he said nothing and just left in the summer, they'd still be in the same position only have a goalkeeper their fanbase doesn't resent going into the crucial CL semi-final.

If it's already agreed he'll go to Bayern there's no gain to announce it now. Unless there's no agreement with them and Schalke are trying to sort out a bidding war possibly. That's the only advantage I can see of it being announced to the public now, just before a UCL semi

Well I'm wondering if all this might create a whole shit-storm in Germany that he wishes to avoid and perhaps come to England. But we're interested in that De Gea character, so it's no use anyway.

This Munich news is all a smokescreen. He'll actually sign for United when he comes for the 2nd leg

Well, it would be a good conspiracy. That he's been forced to announce his intentions now, knowing that he's going to sign for the side he is due to play in the European semis next week. To preserve his integrity and to save the woman he loves (possibly) he has to make his true feelings known to the world even if it means enduring the scorn of the club he worshiped as a young boy.

 yeah, possibly.

As all the german posters/newspapers/websites have been saying for weeks though he's 99% going to Bayern. So, don't get your hopes up.

I like this conspiracy theory.

I have my doubts whether Bayern will even make the champions league though.

Seriously though, who'd sign for a club that didn't have a manager? The risk of the new manager coming in and not liking you, having another preference, or bringing someone with him, is quite substantial, isn't it?

Have to add that as far as I know, the german clubs operate a system that is closer to the Spanish - in terms of having sporting directors. The coach doesn't come in and sell/buys whoever he likes. And if a coach comes to Bayern, finds Neuer there and doesn't like him - tough. He's the best keeper he has...

He said that he just wanted to be honest and tell the truth to the fans about his intentions, instead of hiding them. But nevertheless, bad timing anyways

He actually starts to cry at 2:15.

German fans, what sort of question made him go soft?

Summary:
- I know how the fans feel because at the age of 10 I also used to get angry with professional footballers when they moved because I wouldn't understand them
- now I'm a professional footballer and have a different point of view
- I didn't boo Jens Lehmann either (mad Jens moved to Schalke's arch rivals Dortmund) because I was still a fan of his although he moved to yellow-green (Dortmund's colours)
- but I'm well aware of the fact some fans will get angry
- I spoke with representatives of the fans because I wanted to be honest towards the fans, I wanted to explain myself and it was neither easy for them nor for me
---> after having said that he gets a bit teary

A part of the transcript (shortened):
Neuer: "Ich will den nächsten großen Schritt machen" - WEB.DE

Question: You are employed by Schalke until June 2012. Are you going to leave Schalke already in this summer or will you fulfill your contract?

Neuer: "I can't decide on the date on my own. I have a contract until 2012 and I was aware of that when I've signed it. Horst Held has now informed about interest from FC Bayern Munich. There is a possibility that I will leave earlier."
