Manchester United vs Real Madrid (Thu 27th July, 01:30 UK time)

feck no. De Gea has been well below a top 6 standard for 5 years. His GK stats last year

Onana’s:

No comparison.
DDG needed an upgrade yes, but if the choice was between Onana and Kane, then it's pretty easy for me. Some of you are really sleeping on Kane for some reason. When was the last time we had a 30 league goal a season striker?

Onana - 8 - class. Stopping crosses, quality on the ball, some very good saves, could do nothing on the goals

Wan Bissaka - 6 - some very good touches, he's pretty press resistant but also lack of awareness when team plays offside, horrendous in terms of actually building up play and linking up to progress the ball forward.
Varane - 6 - did alright, but struggles on the ball.
Martinez - 6 - quality on the ball, not the best night defensively.
Shaw - 8 - world class footballer

Casemiro - 6 - some very good moments, some sloppy passes. He'll be fine.
Eriksen - 4 - looked like a retiree against their midfield, couldn't not get up to pace
Mount - 5 - did ok off the ball, struggled a bit on it, missed a sitter
Bruno - 4 - had a shocker today, nothing came off

Garnacho - 7 - lone bright spark in attack, great dribbling, some very good shots. Probably should've scored the one chance early on
Rashford - 4 - tough to play against rudiger and Alaba, but they dominated him

Dalot - 6 - I like him more than Wan Bissaka and he helps our build up more
Maguire - 7 - done for pace once but he's had a strong pre season
Lindelof - 6 - fine
Williams - 10 - just battered into everybody. Footballing wise probably a 5.

McTominay - 6 - some very good pieces of play combined with his usual of not knowing when to pass the ball and where to pass it.
Donny - 5 - didn't do much

Sancho - 5 - a couple of good pieces of play but his passing was well off it
Pellistri - 6 - destroyed camavinga on the one move. Didn't do much else

I disagree on garnacho -- he kept on leaving gaps. Ok when attacking Carvajol but otherwise he contributed little to team play. That's why he isn't a starter.

AWB had vast grounds to cover because of the gap ahead of him -- Bruno drifting infield. Thought AWB did well considering the circumstances.

Yup, but in fairness to Onana it is his first game for United. But we need to gird ourselves for a drop in quality in shotstopping in exchange for the “transformation” is our attack that he’ll deliver.
100% agreed, man. I don't see any "game changer" yet many have talked about.

Mount hate is surprising - he and Bruno are the only ones pressing like animals. Casemiro + Eriksen seem very off, Garnacho not really doing much, Rashford poor too.

Some wrote him off before kicking a ball

Have you missed the part where Tottenham don't want to sell Kane to us?

TBF that's true on Garnacho. Didn't track back well. He presses fine but Shaw was getting 2 v 1's on him a lot. The other side I think camavinga and Vini and their left back just kinda had fun today against our right side. Just didn't work

Madrids Midfield quite obviously pisses all over ours which probably shouldnt be a surprise - that's the difference. They are so incisive with their passing, will be devastating on the break this season.

That depth they have is absolutely insane

Bruno there was supposed to bring attacking balance but it didn't work. AWB with Anthony would HV been better

Tbf if all we needed from our midfielders was pressing, why not just keep Fred?

There is no hate, but he needs to impact the game far more when he has the ball.

You're always going to get those that can't see past a result and everything is wrong but in fact that was a great preseason workout. We didn't get played off the park by any means, it was a level game. Happy enough with it. Need some refinements if we're going to be beating sides like this but I don't think that's any surprise or anything we don't know.

This was so fecking stupid anyway. Why do we have to face these crowd-photoshopping pricks in preseason and why does it always happen when the preseason is in US? Should have had a proper match against Wrexham as promised and advertised instead. This was supposed to be a rest day. I'd say karma has bitten the club in the arse, they tricked thousands of paying fans for Wrexham match, advertised by Fergie himself. There's nothing good that came out of this match outside of Madrid fans gloating in my Telegram group. Actually it's not even good for me. Feck off.

"Good for fitness" does not count. Any team would have been good for fitness. Fecking glazernomics.

Pretty clear that Hojlund won't be enough, we need two strikers. Unless the club has the balls to ignore the noise and bring Greenwood back.

Only a cheap one is possible, other option is try and pick up Toney in January when Kane joins Bayern late in this window

Thought we played well. Lacked cutting edge numerous times in the final 3rd though. Bruno had one of his games where nothing comes off.

We lack a very good striker and I'm not sure there's 1 available we can get. Hojlund hopefully gets the job done if he's signed.

Mount offers more than pressing. He is a smart player who cleans up the gaps in the setup's execution. Plus he has a pretty good passing range. But at this time I think his remit is to plug up the gaps until we can get the system running properly

Outside of Hojlund then only Watkins is the other who comes to mind, however Villa don't need to sell so would be big money

Lots of positives tonight, not too disheartened by the result. We got caught out by a questionable non-offside goal that was a tough chip and then a quality overhead kick. I felt we had better chances tonight, and we might have scored 3-4 on another night.

The real positive for me was how dangerous we looked on the transition offensively. I thought Onana was ok but he immediately showed his value in the buildup play by allowing the whole team to push higher and progress the ball. As soon as we fix some of the chemistry, I think we will score goals for fun and be entertaining to watch. I also didn't see a very intense press tonight, which might have been due to the early stage in the preseason but all in all a decent performance. Not all doom and gloom like some posters here.

Wow! Calm down or at least stay away from windows today.

Good pre season run out. Always like for our pre season games to be against very established sides because it can be a measuring stick.

Bitterly disappointed for Mainoo. Would have liked to see how he fared against this level of opposition. His time will come. Think he's up the pecking order anyways. Ahead of Eriksen for sure now.

For those of us baffled as to why others have been crying out for midfielders, tonight was a very good reminder. Our midfield is still miles off the elite. Need at least 2 midfielders who can control games to compete.

EtH is obviously still experimenting with his midfield combinations. He needs a setup that gets the most out of both Mount and Bruno. That didn't happen at all tonight.

Things will get better. I still think there's a much higher ceiling to this team. Rashford at CF will be fine once he can get a bit more support. I actually think the rightwing is going to be the biggest question mark out of our front 3.

If this was a competitive game, the most worrying thing would have been the inability to track runners (especially Bellingham) through midfield. I'll give the lads the benefit of the doubt with it being preseason though. Hopefully Casemiro in particular can return to his early season form from last season. But with him being over 30 now, it's something just to keep an eye on.

Can see there is still a big gap with the elite teams. City brushed them a side easily in Champions league just recently and we struggle against them.
I guess maintaining top 4 in the league will be sufficient unless we get some serious reinforcement in our striker department.

We played them in pre-season whilst experimenting and fielding the likes of Mainoo. Absolutely nothing can be taken away from this game.

Seemed a very even game all told.

As EtH said after the game, the lack of a cutting edge shows why we desperately need a striker.

It's also worth noting that Real Madrid scored their first goal while Mainoo was off the pitch and United were playing with 10 men.

If this had been a serious game, EtH would have subbed on a replacement for Mainoo the second he went off. The fact we were in no hurry to put 11 onto the pitch shows how little the manager thought it mattered.

You summed it up perfectly the way I see it.

This is the pre-season. Its way too early to gauge and project what our potential end-of-season form will be.

Just look at how we brushed aside Arsenal just a few days ago. Yet I think Arsenal's a better side because of their squad depth. I expect them to do better this season than us.

We are a season away from being able to compete in the PL and the CL. Too many gaps and we lack squad depth.

We aren’t signing two much as we cry about it

Glad this was on the other side of the planet frankly so I didn’t waste my time watching the whole thing.

This thread is peak daft. Pre-season match with new players in key positions, playing against one of the best sides in the world, who are way more settled than us and arguably deserving a draw is suddenly the end of the world? It’s past daft, it’s mental.

For those claiming Kane would have fixed all our woes we have relatively recently had Zlatan, Cavani and Ronaldo, all goal scorers who came off high scoring seasons and scored goals for us to some degree. They didn’t magically cure our defensive issues. We didn’t win the title with them. Spunking the entire transfer budget on one player would be the definition of stupid. We needed, need, reinforcements all over the pitch. This season is about progression. We have needed this rebuild for many seasons and have tried the sticking plaster approach for too long.

Get upset about yourself. It was advertised as a youth game only you being too lazy to inform yourself. And why would anyone have an issue playing top teams? It shows where we stand so better go back to sleep

Didn't watch this because I value my sleep. Could someone give me the rundown? How were Mount and Onana? Antony and Casemiro?

How did we line up? Seen the team and unsure who played as no.9, RW and as the no.10

This is a rational and normal response.

I slept as well, but woke up and turned my phone on to follow last 20 mins on here. Seemed like a good runout, a lot highlighting we definitely need a striker. However according to a lot we are doomed. It is pre-season. When will people ever learn. We had a brilliant pre-season under LVG including beating this lot. That went well. We would have more depth in the squad if we didn't have a striker who is a sicknote and another player the club are dithering over what to do with him.
