Manchester United vs Real Madrid (Thu 27th July, 01:30 UK time)

I haven't seen such an intensive friendly match in recent time. Many players would be in serious body pains. We shouldn’t overreact to losing a preseason game to one of the best teams in the world, also game was quite even overall.

We lost to Fulham (i think) in the opener at O.T. Damn what a lot down
Think it was Swansea, but yeah you are right. That pre-season we beat everybody before us and had a terrible start to the season. People worry about pre-season too much. I would rather have an indifferent pre-season but then have a great start to the season.

Some are getting very worked up already and are in for a looong season. I don't have it in me anymore and I'm not even old

I don't get stressed over pre-season any longer. We have issues which hopefully will be sorted. If they aren't we all know who is to blame, which isn't the manager who will try to do the best he can. It will be the owners who have put us in this situation.

Agreed! I don't have time to get engaged in the situation with the owners although I still think the sale will go through. But fingers crossed EtH can get the players he wants and we can progress through the season.

Licha is my favourite player and Mount does not impress with anything special for now. I don't know if he was the right decision for our midfield target there were better options on the market. Onana was good pretty good too !

Anyway we were the better team on the field most of the time. They scored 1 offside goal and got lucky in the end with a cross that's all.

I know the Wrexham game was for the kids and it's pre-season but we've lost both games in this new kit, kinda makes me feel like the grey kit from 95/96 and we'll end up blaming players not being able to distinguish it from the crowd when we get tonked in it by a relegation challenger.

Just watching the match now and my main take from it is thank the lord that Liverpool couldn’t afford Bellingham.

This thread is peak daft. Pre-season match with new players in key positions, playing against one of the best sides in the world, who are way more settled than us and arguably deserving a draw is suddenly the end of the world? It’s past daft, it’s mental.

For those claiming Kane would have fixed all our woes we have relatively recently had Zlatan, Cavani and Ronaldo, all goal scorers who came off high scoring seasons and scored goals for us to some degree. They didn’t magically cure our defensive issues. We didn’t win the title with them. Spunking the entire transfer budget on one player would be the definition of stupid. We needed, need, reinforcements all over the pitch. This season is about progression. We have needed this rebuild for many seasons and have tried the sticking plaster approach for too long.

I like this post. In the past, as soon as we get top 4, our approach has been to always get those signings that can change us into title challengers without considering the feasibility and takes us into wild directions, rather than studied progression. At this stage I would settle for being a regular in top 2/3 than irrationally hope to win a title when it's clear that our team is miles behind City.

Just watched the highlights.
Out finishing is abysmal like usual.

We need minimum two attackers that can finish.

A striker and another. Club may keep Greenwood as the second option

In which alternate reality were we bullied in this game?

It was a narrow defeat to one of the best teams in Europe. An offside goal and a last minute wonder goal after 9 subs were made. United had good chances and I saw plenty of fight in the players. The players will get more from that game than beating some German division 2 side 8-0

I agree. Although Real's Midfield was superb.it wasn't like our goal was peppered. . They had decent chances and needed 2 super goals( not sure if the first was off or not).

Basically we just need to learn from this and move on.

Onana being calm in distribution helped a little in getting the memories of FA cup final out . We will get better , now we really need to get that striker tied up. Amrabat will also be helpful in big matches I think.

Just watched the first half and the gulf in class between the 2 teams was very clear. Once we passed the half way line, we looked bereft of ideas. It's hard to blame it on lacking a striker as Madrid are pretty much in the same boat.

Just seen highlights, so I'm just gonna say both goals were a bit weak from onana.
I'm a big supporter of bringing a goalkeeper like Onana in, but I'd be saying it about DeGea, so I'm saying it now.

Jesus this thread is pathetic. What utter drivel is being posted.
I agree.

Its a friendly, Camavinga made about 10 yellow card fouls. Right, less than a week ago Rashford was jogging around the park against Arsenal trying to get fitness. The running down of the players on a pre-season is horrendous. Its called pre season for a reason. Unfortunately for some we lost the Houston Cow Pat trophy to RM. I couldn't care less. I am more worried that Mainoo & Mctominay is ok for different reasons. Im glad that Sancho etc didn't stick 3 pass Madrid as that would lead to sense of optimism that we don't need right now. We need a striker and game time to get the team moving forward. It totally obvious that the panic at the back is cancelled out with the introduction of Onana. This is something we can all looking forward to this season and the blood pressure is lowered when the ball is played around the back to beat a press. RM tried in once and gave up. So onwards and upwards its a friendly chill. Pellistri needs more match minutes he is a baller he has the knack to beat the press and invariably invites a foul/ yellow card.

Why did we get mount instead of bellingham? The latter seems to address our midfield issues more. Thank god pool didnt get him instead.

Yeah get that Onana is shit in early super job. We were down to 10 men and it was offside or are you conveniently forgetting that. He is off a plane 48 hrs ago had one session and most can see what he will bring.

WHY ? Let think for a moment. He was over 100m , didn't want to join Man UTD and is most likely a Liverpool fan with the noise about going to them back in the winter. Finally he choose to join Real Madrid over Liverpool and we were never in the conversation.

It is, Arsenal just beat Barca 5-3 after us beating them 2-0 but does anyone really care now that we beat them 2-0.

It means nothing as already stated we once beat Madrid, liverpool etc and then lost to Swansea on first day.

Only thing that matters is that we’re fully prepared for Wolves.

Our play from the back was definitely improving. But I was yet to see it as "game changer" that can turn a draw into win or revolution our style of play.

Although it's all still too early.
I disagree with this point. How high our line was in the first half was really good to see, you do have to remember this is Real Madrid, we will suffocate the smaller teams in the premier league, especially when our midfield/attack get more fitness in pre season and press more. The only player that seemed to be fit enough to sustain the pressing was Mount, if we can get the rest of the players on the same wavelength as Mount we will be an issue.

Overall, I think we played well except scoring. Onana was very calm on the ball, I think he is the right signing. Mount hasn't score in pre-season, he is suppose to chip in some goals. Antony being Antony, I think his on target rate is probably like 20-30%. He has to be clinical in front of goal. I believe we will not be run over by any side. This team will get stronger and stronger, we need 2 more strikers for sure but can only afford 1. Please get a striker ASAP and we will do well this season.

Madrid sorted their midfield in minutes, but we are still struggling in this position years after.

After we sign Hojlund: why didn't we get Kane!?

Anyway, wouldn't read too much into preseason other than trying to get most of our signings integrated into the team and get everyone match fit before the start of the season.

Plenty of times we've had immense pre-season performances and results and the start to the season was a letdown. Look at how good players like Iqbal/Savage (heck even Martial!) looked last preseason. Not bad players but the point remains: you shouldn't read too much into it.

No need to defend him so aggressively, I'm ecstatic we have signed him, DeGea doesn't cut it anymore.
Doesn't change the fact I thought he was a bit weak for both goals.
And I agree he was left exposed badly for both.

Would you have preferred to go into the season with a new striker in and Henderson/Heaton as our first choice keeper then?
Yes if that's the way it had to work, but it didn't

Seemed to me Onana already had a significant impact on how we play from the back and escape pressure. It's 90', but clear as a day how we are going to use him so those comments are a bit strange.

The bit about shotstopping is bizarre, do we assume Onana will be worse than De Gea who already was average at best (overall)?

It was only his first game, and the opponent was Real, but there was nothing about Onana’s performance last night that looked anything like a transformation in our attack.

As for shotstopping, and I’ll make it brief here since since this isn’t the thread for it, Dave made some calamitous mistakes last season but he has also made numerous saves that you just don’t see typical keepers at even elite clubs make.

Not sure what you're expecting from Onana to be honest. You thought he will single-handedly transform our attack?

On the bolded part, in the end it matters how many goals he let's in compared to what is expected. De Gea did no better than average keeper, so the bar isn't exactly high for Onana. He might not be a great shotstopper and still can be a significant upgrade on De Gea of last few seasons.

This was so fecking stupid anyway. Why do we have to face these crowd-photoshopping pricks in preseason and why does it always happen when the preseason is in US? Should have had a proper match against Wrexham as promised and advertised instead. This was supposed to be a rest day. I'd say karma has bitten the club in the arse, they tricked thousands of paying fans for Wrexham match, advertised by Fergie himself. There's nothing good that came out of this match outside of Madrid fans gloating in my Telegram group. Actually it's not even good for me. Feck off.

"Good for fitness" does not count. Any team would have been good for fitness. Fecking glazernomics.

Money.
