Oh god, why.

Can anyone make sure that Kroos does not leave till he agrees a contract with us :p

will disagree. Jones imo will end up in midfield and with Carrick and Giggs will form a pretty good midfield tomorrow.

I don't see him having the technical ability or the positional sense to be a midfielder. He is all blood and guts which is great for last ditch tackles but I hope he stays and focuses on being a CB.

We can't really afford to play Jones in midfield tomorrow, we haven't the defensive options to allow it.

Rafael-Smalling-Jones-Buttner
-------Carrick--Fellaini-------
Valencia--Kagawa--Welbeck
-----------Rooney----------

In these games we really miss a player like Park who could work hard and defend while also contributing to counter attacks and pressing from the front. I'm hoping Valencia and Welbeck can do this.

Kagawa needs to start. He is good enough with the ball to produce a clever pass or turn even while being pressured.

Rooney up top will be vital. I expect him to help out in midfield like he usually does to give us that extra solidity in the middle.

Giggs might start and deserves to after his last performance. I don't want Rio or Vidic near this game. We need pace everywhere and Rio can only walk now anyway.

Why the feck does his training involved him running round chasing them like a simpleton and getting embarrassed when he gets nutmegged for the zillionth time?

What other top club in this day and age has a manager who runs around with the players on the training pitch like someone who has won a competition for the day?

It's going to be like a battle in WW2 where Bayern have a squadron of 11 Tiger Tanks while United have 11 foot soldiers armed only with swords, led by General Moyes who still rides on a horse.

First time ever I've wanted a 3-5-2 line up

Well it all depends on how you want to spin it. 1. He looks like a simpleton running around in training with the players. 2. He joins in the odd drill once in a while which is a good way to connect with players.
Your choice, what do you want it to be?.

I have this weird, weird feeling that we will somehow get something out of this game.

Bayern's record v English teams in the last five Champions' League seasons has been even:
11 games - 6W, 1D & 4L.

I said it earlier in the thread, but with Rafael in. Now, if Rafael is out, I think a 5-3-1-1 kind of formation is what might work out best...

de Gea
Valencia Smalling Vidic Jones Buttner
Carrick Fellaini Giggs
Rooney
Welbeck
--
Lindegaard; Evans; Fletcher, Nani, Kagawa, Januzaj; Hernandez

Ferdinand may make the bench over Evans depending on how ready he is, while I wouldn't be surprised to see Young over Nani either. Cleverley could make the bench over Fletcher, but really shouldn't.

Having three at the back and three in midfield should help against defending Bayern's attacks, especially when they will have 60%~ possession in both legs against us. Butter vs Robben becomes less of a factor when we're defending as I would imagine, most of the time, we could have two from Jones/Giggs/Buttner double-up on him.. And when we're attacking, Buttner/Giggs together with Robben unlikely to track back all the time could get us places.

It also gives us a lot of flexibility when making substitutions. Changing one player doesn't just change one player any more, it changes the shape, tactics, and formation. If say, Valencia is sacrificed and Smalling goes to Right Back, we can have Januzaj come on making a front three with Rooney and Welbeck. If we really needed more creativity and a goal, Kagawa can replace one of the three CM's to play behind Rooney or from the left if Welbeck is preferred to play the lone striker role.

Another change without making a sub is to move Valencia into a front three with Rooney and Welbeck, while Smalling shifts to Right Back in a back four.

Lots of options, both to try and stand firm or take the game to Bayern, which is what we're going to have to do at different times in the game. Maybe this would work better in the away leg, but by then Moyes would have the option of playing Rafael and Evra, so it wouldn't cross his mind unless he deploys it here and it works.

who cares? why do people get annoyed about stupid stuff like this?

Also, in that scenario didn't the smaller Manchester United crest defeat the larger Bayern crest? I'm no Star Wars expert...

Smalling will not be available for this.

guardiola takes hold of his training sessions, hes a visionary and an old school manager all in one. moyes gets involved on the training pitch hes an embarrassment. i swear some of you sound like teenage girls having a good old bitch about a girl in your class. get your f£cking heads together and stop obsessing over such trivial nonsense, in case you didnt notice we're playing bayern munich tomorrow.

now let me get back to thread where we discuss what giggs meant when he scratched his arse at the press conference. tools.

This tie should theoretically play right into Moyes hands. I think we need Jones in the midfield, unless Rafa is out then move him to right back and bring Cleverley or Kagawa in. I'd be tempted to start Kagawa over Valencia actually but i think seeing him off the bench is probably more likely. We had a lot to do anyway, but injuries and suspensions mean we're really up against it.

Someone asked Ryan Giggs what the difference between the treble side and this side.

Some quotes.

Pep Guardiola:
Like a trainer, for me, it is an honour for me to go to Old Trafford. I was in Old Trafford like a player when I was 19 or 20 years old, so its long time ago. Like a trainer, I’ve never been there so for me, its an honour – like a coach from Bayern Munchen to go to one of the mythical stadiums in the world, one of the best teams in the world. We know that in Premier League, they didn’t make a good season. Normally, Manchester United are to fight in there, but Champions League is another competition and normally, in this competition, we play the history and play the emotions and play the feelings in 90 minutes + 90 minutes. And I am pretty sure that Rooney and his teammates are going to make the best performance possible to beat us.
When we expect they are going to play like, maybe they played this season, we’ll make a huge mistake and we are going to try to prepare as much as possible and to know the dark problems and the weakness problems of United and beat them.

Phillip Lahm:
We are the defending champions which is why we are one of the favourites to win the tournament, but Manchester is a great team. Despite their current problems, United is a massive club with great history and we cannot be fooled by their current league position. They have outstanding individual quality but I do believe we have a good chance to progress to the semi-finals if we play to our full potential in both legs.
The two clubs have fought many a great battle in the past. I’m really looking forward to going to Manchester. I’ve played in Old Trafford twice. The stadium is huge, and the atmosphere is fantastic.

Arjen Robben:
I think its a good draw for us, and one of the reasons is that we’re playing away from home first. United aren’t in their best shape right now, but they are still a top team, so I expect two very difficult games. Nevertheless, I think we are all really looking forward to those games.
When you play in the Champions League, you only have two matches. Of course, you could argue that United are struggling this season but that doesn’t count. We’re playing two knockout matches against a top team now and we need to be ready for that from the first minute.

Pep on why he isn't managing United.
"He invited me to a super restaurant and we spent a very good time together," said Guardiola.

"My English is not so good and Sir Alex spoke quickly, so sometimes I have a problem understanding him.

"That's why maybe I didn't understand if I received an offer or not! No, it was a friendly dinner, he was very gentle with me.

Also apparently Saf was very gentle with Pep. :smirk:

No wonder we ended up having to go with a fellow Scot.

At least it's nice to see that we are still respected outside of this country.

There was a story that Uli Hoeneß told. He was in New York to have talks with Guardiola and to do the contract signings and met Sir Alex there in a restaurant that day... (SAF has an appartment in New York).

Yeah, Fergie actually asked Klopp and Pep, but they didn't have a f*** what he was saying and just laughed politely.

I'm baffled by the people playing 5 at the back. Do you realise how much of an adjustment it is to play 3 centrebacks and you think we'll try that for the first time ever against Bayern.

Mental.
