Manchester United Vs Bayern Munich

We have to park the bus and try on the counter. It's the only way. Pointless trying to play an open game against them.

Rafael - Fit CB - Fit CB - Buttner
-------- Carrick - Giggs ---------
- Valencia - Kagawa - Welbeck -
------------ Rooney -------------

This will most likely be the lineup we will see. Our best hope will be weathering the storm and trying to catch them on the break with long balls from Giggs and Carrick onto the pace of Welbeck and Valencia.

I know he's not shown much so far, but I really do like Buttner, he's a scrappy fecker and that's always endearing. I think he'll go on to be a good LB at a mid table PL club. Very harsh for him to be blooded in the first team only to be thrown against Robben, poor guy.

Giggs is not weathering any storm. That would be suicide. Rewind to CL final 2011 and picture Giggs+Carrick, this would be worse.
This...we've made the mistake of playing Giggs against Guardiola sides in the past, and he's been a massive weak link. He's now 3/5 years older, and it would be madness to play him.

He's a better option than both Fellaini or Cleverley though. Giggs will probably get rings run round him, as those 2 would, but he could also make us a goal from nothing so I'd have him in. Giggs playing will not win us this game, nothing will. If Marounne Fellaini plays in midfield against this lot we will be a bigger laughing stock around Europe than we already are. I cringe at the sheer thought of him trying to get near Kroos, Lahm, Schweini etc.

I would have played Giggs but either on the wing or as part of a midfield 3 (with Shinji, Rooney and Welbeck on attack). A midfield two o Giggs and Carrick would be suicidal.

Carlos Velasco Carballo - a referee from Madrid - is the referee for the match.

Typically Uefa. There will be one or two spanish teams in the semi final...
How they are related (the referee and UEFA wanting Spanish teams on the semi). Carballo is a good referee but like all Spanish referees he is very card happy. Wouldn't surprise to see Fellaini sent off in the moment he decides to elbow someone.

If Felli doesn't start this game its criminal. Our best chance of scoring is putting the ball on his big furry bonce from a rooney free kick or corner.

Wouldn't hate to see chicha start up from, pace in behind can unsettle them

Not sure if serious with wanting Fellaini to start or not but in regards to him winning headers, we just don't look like ever finding him when he gets in the box and if we try to, he doesn't attack the ball like he did at Everton.

haha nah im serious. I'm pretty peps team might spend 0 time in training defending set pieces. He hasn't had a massive amount of success at united so far, but he had the most headers on target in the league last year, he is dangerous if the right ball goes in

Our only good form in 2014 has come when Fellaini has played. It allows Moyes to drop one (or both) of Young/Valencia because we suddenly have a bit more presence in midfield. You can hate his gangly style all you like, but Fellaini is the man who enables the likes of Kagawa to shine.

I have a feeling it will be:
------------DDG
Rafael - Jones - Carrick- Buttner
------ Fletcher - Fellaini
- Young - Rooney - Kagawa
-------- Welbeck

I doubt there'd be a huge difference with fletcher next to Carrick or giggs then with fellaini. Fletcher if anything is more agile and a smarter passer, and less prone to feck up under pressure. Fellainis been good in the smaller games but he's been completely off the pace in the big games so far, and with his lack of mobility and how he's slow on the turn, bayern would just pass it around him.

So has the rest of the starting XI that will start alongside him. I think the gameplan is going to be to sit back and hit Bayern on the counter, where Welbeck will be able to either hold it up or win a freekick. That's where Fellaini will be dangerous and his lack of mobility (which I think you've vastly overstated) will be less of an issue.

Not that it matters much, but I've just been looking at the team City beat Munich with.

City XI:

Hart
Richards- Demechilis - Lescott - Kolarov
Garcia - Fernandinho
Navas - Silva - Milner
Dzeko

In terms of personnel, I think we could match the team above. Energy in midfield, pace on the wings and hopefully a disciplined back four.

Are Bayern really that good? Don't get me wrong, I know they're a title winning team. Its just that I don't know whether they're those types who'll treat us with disdain and score 5 or just score two and stay back since its a great score for them in a CL Quarter final.

Well they are that good. But as you said, they may not think it is necessary to take us to the sword. Something which I mentioned a few days back. This is after all a CL QF.

I expect them to score 3 and then shut up shop and keep the ball.

they will want some sort of revenge for the Final in 99, I see them going all out to hammer us.

I really doubt they are thinking of it from a revenge POV. It's not like we have not met each other since then. This is a CL QF, away from home, at OT. Sure we have not been great at home but I really doubt any team left in the CL will treat United with disdain in their own den.

Exactly. I don't think they'll really crucify us. In fact, I think Bayern are vulnerable when they sit back and try to absorb the pressure.. I fully expect us to come out of this with a respectable loss or even a draw. We're not a poor team on paper.

They keep the ball very well. If am honest, I dont even see us scoring in either leg barring a set piece or some luck. And our problems arent on paper, we're a good team but unfortunately, we play like shit and Bayern are miles ahead atm.

I disagree with one point. They will not sit back and absorb pressure like us where we start defending deep when we go ahead. They will starve us of the ball and keep a very high possession. We will need pace and accuracy to get past their defense.

I'll be expecting them to have the vast majority of possession; 70-odd%, I'd say. We'll have to be on our top game if we are to do anything with the little possession we have. We've played far better in the Champions League than we have in the Premier League so we can take confidence from that.

The atmosphere at OT will be electric. As long as we don't sit too deep and we are accurate and quick with our passing while on the attack, we've got a shot at getting something out the game.

De Gea

Rafael --- Jones --- Vidic --- Buttner

Giggs --- Fellaini

Valencia --- Kagawa --- Welbeck

Rooney
If Rafael isn't fit, Moyes may have to put Valencia into the right-back spot. If Valencia is out too, then Jones can be pushed out to the right and Carrick can fill in at centre back with Vidic, if no other centre-backs are available. Januzaj can then play on the right.

We've beaten you home and away on the way to our CL win in 01 and the players from our academy who lived through '99 as fans (Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Müller) already had their revenge in 2010. I don't think '99 matters tomorrow for the players. If we take the lead early, I expect us to play more cautious, the game will be more about control through possession, similar to the return leg against Arsenal. Unless we concede early and have to turn the game around, I can't see us go full throttle for 90 minutes. That doesn't mean that we can't score more than 1 or 2 goals though, depends on how United plays. Arsenal never stopped defending in the return leg, even when they needed two goals to go through. If United takes more risks after we take the lead, we certainly will try to exploit it. If not, we most likely see the game out.

Still a few media outlets saying Rafael and Valencia won't make it for the 1st leg.

Add to that Evra Smalling Evans, possibly Rio and definitely RVP. That could leave us with a back four of Jones Carrick Vidic and Buttner.

Let that sink in.

What you can expect?

About that... - Guardiola even will field the same players - Martinez for Dante who is booked. It could be that he fields Götze instead of Rafinha - but that is the only one. And that was starting September, 2 months after Guardiola arrived in Munich. I guess they should do that better now. The pitch should be ideal for that kind of passing.

This is going to be a backs against the wall job and we will need to be pretty much perfect.

Please United reward us all and also give me a great reason to be awake at 5:30 in the moring.
