Manchester United Vs Bayern Munich

If you were to win 2-0, then it would mean you would have an excellent chance of going through. Still Bayern would be dangerous, but you would have to be favourites. But first, you would have to win 2-0 :wenger:
I can see us getting thumped in Munich to be honest. I'm approaching this game with very little belief we can turn the opponents over, it's quite strange.

If fecking Arsenal can get a draw there, so can we... Have a bite, Al!

No, it's not strange at all to be honest. Everyone is scared of Bayern these days. Especially a United that have been underperforming for an entire season.

But let's just for the sake of argument assume that United win on Tuesday night by 2-0. Then, that will inevitably create enormous self-belief in United players, and create doubt in the hearth if Bayern Munich players, manager and supporters. On top of that, it will allow United to go to Munich with an ultra defensive plan and a few counters thrown into the mix that can kill the tie right off. That's all am saying.

To be totally honest, all jokes aside, even if we do win by that scoreline, which is not entirely impossible, I can see us getting hammered at the Allianz Arena similar to how Barcelona dispatched Milan last year for four after they took a surprise 2 goal lead with them to the Nou Camp.

As a Barca fan, I remember the Milan tie last season very well, and before the second leg I felt 99% certain that we would go out, until 30mns before kick-off. Anyway, in that game, Barca brought their A-game (it was as if the Barca of 08/11 returned) Messi and Iniesta did their magic, and a not so good Milan side, still had an excellent chance in the first half to score that crucial away goal that would have made it virtually impossible for Barcelona to go through. It is that difficult to overturn a 2-0 deficit, no matter who you are, or who you are playing against. Or look at United versus Olympiacos. Olympiacos (a quite weak team) basically self-destructed in that game so that United could go through.

To any Bayern fans:

How do you think the Thiago injury will affect your team's chances against both United and in your effort to retain the CL title?
Sucks, but I'm not too worried. We lost Kroos last season almost at the same time and made it work, now we have Götze as well, who can play a comparable role to Thiago in midfield, it's no excuse if we fail to go through.

Yeah, it is.
:nono:

Jesse Jackson once said "To be without hope is like being without goals, what are you working towards?"

Me being the brilliant *********** I am, what this basically says is that if you really really wish for it, we'll get a goal! All you have to do is believe!! #bel20ve

Excellent but if we get 1, they'l get 3 atleast. Anything less than a 2-0 or 3-1 in the first leg and I'l be surprised.

Gotze plays in central midfield?

In terms of pressure, it's amazing how it's now a case of absolutely none at all.

Against Madrid last year we were all genuinely disappointed because we were the better side in the second leg and we were winning games consistently regardless of us playing well. Not one person would be as disappointed this year even if it's a close tie because no one expects us to win because we simply are not winning games consistently.

I predicted 0-3 vs City, so I hate to do it but I'm going 1-4. I just can't see how we can keep them out, Robben and Ribery are too hot to handle whilst our midfield and attack isn't cohesive enough to work as a unit to not only score goals ourselves but defend from the front all the way to the back.

De Gea needs to pull out a Bernabeu performance.

TBF it's also because Bayern are the best team in Europe, dominated the CL last year, and they've only improved. Real had weaknesses, Bayern...not so much.

Our biggest European Cup defeat is 5-0 against Sporting on 18 March 1964. This could be another record that goes under the Moyes regime.

If we were sat in the position we were in last year, there would still be pressure to be as successful as possible. There was a real belief we could go all the way last year and that defeat deflated everyone for a while.

Granted Bayern are the best, but with us being in the position we're in and putting in the performances we've been putting in, there is no expectation at all...not even like Liverpool in 2005 where they always held hope. I don't know anyone who even hopes because it's so inevitable.

He can play as one of the 2 more attacking CMs in the 4141. Thiago didn't really play that great as one of the 2 CMs in the 4231 anyway.

How do you feel the game would go, Balu? Do you see a typical CL encounter or do you envisage you guys beating the living day lights out of us?

My Guess:

Neuer
Rafinha Martinez Dante Alaba
Lahm
Robben Schweni Kroos Ribery
Mandzukic

thanks. is it incredibly optimistic of me to say that with a big performance theres things there we can take advantage of? certainly we shouldnt have 2 centre backs running scared of a top striker as weve seen in many games this season. we get welbeck on top of whoever is in that dm position when they have the ball and have fellaini kick lumps out of kroos all night. as much as we should worry about robben and ribery they wont offer much going back so lets have welbeck and januzaj getting at the full backs and kagawa behind rooney.

really though i had this optimism before so many games this year :( id take a draw

edit: key areas for me are rafael having one of his good nights, rooney being in the very top of his game and the role welbeck might play.

It would have been an uphill battle anyways but I don't know what will happen with all the defensive injuries. Evra is suspended, Rio is injured and is a liability anyways, Evans & Smalling have been missing for a few weeks & Rafael got injured against Villa. I felt that Jones and Carrick in the midfield would have been given us the best chance in order to park the bus and get something on the counter. It looks they might be playing in defense now. Can't get any shittier for us.

I fear how we lined up vs City was intended as a dress rehearsal.

My Guess:

Neuer
Rafinha Martinez Dante Alaba
Lahm
Robben Schweni Kroos Ribery
Mandzukic
Dante is suspended, pretty sure it's Boateng and Martinez in defense. Müller will start, imo, he was rested yesterday. Not sure if we play the 4141. I expect Schweini + Kroos as a double pivot with either Götze behind Müller or Müller behind Mandzukic. Ribery and Robben on the wings.

I said before, I take a 2-0 aggregate win. Doubt it will be as bad as most here predict. I expect United to rise to the occasion. I'd love an away win, 0-1 with a late goal or something like that, to keep our away record going.

Let's see what defense and midfield we can muster up for the game.

If we had Smalling/Evans/an alternate dimension, 4 years younger Evra, I'd be so much more confident in our ability to get a result. Any defence with Vidic/Ferdinand/Carrick will get destroyed.

I dont rate that Rafinha player too highly, you can get at him.

Think Moyes ended that in the last round.

We hadnt lost an away game in the Cl knockout since Bayern in 2010?

Mandzukic

Guardiola will not play Mandzukic upfront. He will play similar to the match against ManCity. That is why Mandzukic seems to react pissed like he somehow did Tuesday and yesterday. And I do not think that his performance in this two matches will earn him a starting spot... - and he is out of the run he had at the start of the year. I do not think that Guardiola thinks to win the match by headers... - that were the only advantages Mandzukic had... his run and his headers.

Another one that wants to loose 0:3 because of playing players that are not eligible...

Dante is booked and for sure will miss out. So Boateng and Martinez will be the defender pair. Both were rested at the weekend - as well as Alaba.

Kroos and Müller were fully rested at the weekend, too - Müller was not even subbed in.

It probably will be this

Neuer
Rafinha Boateng Martinez Alaba
Lahm
Robben Schweinsteiger Kroos Ribery
Müller

or this

Neuer
Lahm Boateng Martinez Alaba
Schweinsteiger Kroos
Götze
Robben - Müller - Ribery
The only question will be if he will play with Lahm as a right back - then Götze will play behind Müller and it will be more of a front four or a 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-4 or with Lahm in defensive midfield - then it will be a 4-3-3

The blueprint for that was seen last Tuesday - even if they played without Ribery. Götze, Müller and Robben were all playing false nines - or 10s - falling back into midfield helping with the build-up and getting into forward positions. Very fluid and hard to defend as they were always out of the grip of the defenders.

Oh - and actually - Robben and Ribery always track back... ;) - else they would not play...

If you want to look what you might expect in regards to tactics - get yourself the first half of the Hertha - Bayern match of last Tuesday. Rojadirecta has downloads of it.

I might touch the lay of Munich at 1.49, got a feeling you'll put in a Chelsea vs Barca 2012 style performance. Not gonna do what a lot on here did with us and write us off and joke about how we would get thrashed, because in football anything can happen on the day.

There are two problems with that analogy. First, while Chelsea was clearly not on the level of that Barca, their defense was better organised and more solid than the current United. Second, this Bayern squad is stronger than the Barcelona of 2012, it is on the same level as them on their absolute peak. In short the difference of quality between the teams in the two fixtures is even greater.

For anybody suggesting parking the bus: don´t. This will only play in the hands of Bayern. They will suffocate you around your own box and sooner or later rip the bus apart.

The only one doable way to make them struggle is to pressure them. Pressure them early and pressure them organised. Restrict their passing as best as possible. This will be extremely hard because you don´t run a collective pressing system and you will simply have to outrun them. Putting more effort than them onto the pitch is your best shot. To be honest, nobody really expects anything from you in that tie so use that to your advantage and try to overwhelm them.
