Manchester United Vs Bayern Munich

What's our worst defeat at Old Trafford in the Champions League?

Edit: Plus worst defeat at Old Trafford in Europe in general (including cup winners cup etc)?

This is exactly what I'm thinking. Moyes is a bit of a collector of records, and I'm pretty confident he could take this one.

We should also dig into lowest possession ever at OT (I assume it was v. Barca in the semi a few years ago) as I'm pretty sure Moyes will get that added to his growing CV.

There are not many defeats at OT in Europe and what there is, none are real beatings just beaten by the odd goal.
There are a few away, 0-4 at Oporto 1978 , Barcelona 1984 and Milan 1958, the biggest away defeat is 1964 Sporting CP 5-0 and we won the home leg of that 4-1.

Cheers, I actually had to go through it all season by season. But from what I've found (I could be wrong as I was skipping through them pretty quick) we've never lost by more than one goal at Old Trafford in Europe.

Our 'worst' defeat was a '3-2' loss to Deportivo in 2001.

I found the same too, could be more records broken on Tuesday. :(

After seeing the team against Villa yesterday, I think Moyes might go with something like:

De Gea
Rafael - Ferdinand - Vidic - Buttner
Jones - Carrick
Valencia - Giggs - Welbeck
Rooney

Lindegaard - Fletcher - Fellaini - Young - Januzaj - Kagawa - Hernandez

Yup, sounds exactly like the sort of thing Moyes would do, Kagawa was one of our best players yesterday, so he'd leave him out on Tuesday.

It's exactly what I expect...

Front 4 I want:

Januzaj-Kagawa-Welbeck
--------Rooney--

Front 4 I expect:

Valencia-Rooney/Welbeck-Young
---------Welbeck/Rooney--

We should play a team that doesn't try to play any offensive football, pretty much park the bus in terms of midfield and defenders and have some players upfront to try to hit on our weak counters. Play hard working midfielders!

De Gea
Rafael Vidic Jones Buttner
Fellaini Fletcher
Kagawa
Welbeck ---------------------- Januzaj
Rooney

I'm hoping for:

-------------------DDG
Smalling----Carrick---Vidic----Rafael
-----------Jones-------Giggs
Valencia--------Kagawa--------Welbeck
------------------Rooney

- our best bet is to hit them on the counter, with tons of pace (Valencia & Welbeck) & Giggs/Kagawa trying to release the runners with first time (risky) passes

- can swap Carrick/Jones in that formation but I like Jones' pace in midfield, similar to his Madrid role last season

- highly doubt Rafael will play at lb, it will be Buttner & I'm hoping he surprises us all with a great showing against Robben. :nervous:

I just hope we don't see Fellaini in midfield. Yeah he'll offer decent aerial ability but I fear his immobility will end up costing us against Kroos/Schweinsteiger/Gotze

Have United ever been this long odds to win a home game ever in the last 20 or so years?

7/1 on Betfair.

I wouldn't touch us at 15/1.

I might touch the lay of Munich at 1.49, got a feeling you'll put in a Chelsea vs Barca 2012 style performance. Not gonna do what a lot on here did with us and write us off and joke about how we would get thrashed, because in football anything can happen on the day.

4 man defence won't cut it against Bayern, esp with makeshift full backs and shitty wingers. Combine both to one pair shitty wing backs and load up the midfield.

.....................Rooney...............
.... Januzaj....Fellaini.....Mata....
......................Jones.................
.Buttner.......................Valencia.
.........Rio.....Carrick...Vidic..........

What's the odds on Bayern winning by 6 or more goals on aggregate?

The poor form this season has been an elaborate plan to make Bayern think we are there for the taking. They will attack us and fall into our trap.

You can't just drop a five-man defence on a team all of a sudden. A CL quarter final against possibly Europe's best side is hardly the time to go experimental.

with bet 365 66-1 , bet victor 110-1, the rest are between the 2, thats for a Bayern 6-0 win

I was thinking more of a 6 or more goals difference over aggregate which I've found at 4-1, 7-1 for 7 or more and 22-1 for 8 or more. Think I'm going to put 10 on at 4-1 and 7-1.

Only strategy is to park the bus. Last night BM was held to a 3-3 draw against a lowly side. Hoping against hope

We're being given as much chance as a non league team away to a Premier league team.

I wonder if this will be one of those special games where odds are upset. I hope so!

They didn't really park the bus though, they actually had a go at their (somewhat weakened team).

Park the bus and we'll fail epicly, we might as well have a go at them. Though considering Moyes only knows one way we're pretty fecked.

Rafael got injured yesterday and came off at half time. I hope it was just precautionary but I don't think so. I think he will be out of this match and Valencia has a knee injury. Not sure if he will be available for this game.

We desperately need Smalling and Evans back. If they are we will no doubt be rushing them back but it's worth the risk. We haven't got anything else to play for.

Could well be. That is what I am counting on. Our awful form somehow gets them complacent. 'cause if they are firing on all cylinders, we could be out of the tie by the first half.

I'm relying on the belief that even v City and Liverpool we knew there wasn't the league standing to really play for, so subconsciously underperformed. This one will get them right up for it. Obviously that may well not be enough, but i'll be driving up there hopeful still.

In about 25 years of supporting us I've never been so sure that we are going to lose a game. The nearest to this was the 2011 CL Final.

They were derbies against our most bitter rivals. If anything they should have 'subconsciously overperformed'.

It'd be just like Wayne & co to turn up for this game, as some are only truly interested in glamour ties.
That isn't necessarily a dig - just what I feel to be true.

United have always been the underdogs. Even more this season due to our league position. If fergie was in charge I wouldn't expect the fans to be totally confident. You only need to look back on last season, everyone on the caf was convinced RM would thrash us but then nothing of that sort happened. It's just the way it has always been for us.

Really? I remember the vibe here in the RM tie last season to be one of confidence. We certainly expected to go through after the 1st leg.

Ofcourse after the first leg the vibe was full of confidence because we did not get battered. I was referring to the vibe after the draw or before the first leg.

Yeah, that didn't happen.

It's actually worse than 2011 as on that occasion I still had confidence in our defence. Now both midfield and defence are fecked (without mentioning the Guardiola v Moyes tactical mismatch).

I honestly can't come up with any convincing combination. 0-3 to Bayern.

This! We'd seen Ronaldo and gang tear up Spain beforehand, and this place was almost as resigned to defeat as people seem now.
And that was with Fergie managing, and us top of the league!

Start like we did against City, and I think we'd all be crying by about 20mins, but start sensibly, and who knows.

Remember that game we had them 3-0 at Old Trafford after losing the away leg? Rooney came off injured, Rafael had a meltdown, and it was all over.
Odd stuff can happen in cup games to change the tie immeasurably.
Nani last year showed that too.

"Park the bus" has been our default position all season. We know Bayern are better than us but why not not just give them a game?

That's what I'm saying. In 2011 I felt we had about 20% chance to win the match, as I felt there was no way we could contain Messi and Iniesta but we might have our tactics right after the first final. Against Bayern I honestly feel there's 0% chance to win. Unless De Gea has some miracle match I can't see how we can stop them.

I don't remember being like this before Madrid last year. I genuinely can't remember the last time I was so pessimistic about our chances in any game (even pre-Fergie). Unless the last 8 months have been an elaborate rope-a-dope, it is very hard to find any rational reasons for hope.
