Manchester United vs AS Roma (Pre-season Friendly)

Dont think Herrera will play. I dare say LvG is already convinced so will give him a breather. Cleverley is the one who needs to impress tonight.

Side question: is Januzaj flying out at all? Not as if he actually played in the WC

Yeah they're quite good but I still think we'll win. Serie A is still quite a bit away from the premier league overall wise, though it'll be a tight game. Interested to see how much Pjanic will play, didn't play vs Liverpool the other day but he should start against us. Definitely a good test for us though playing against a player of his quality.

It'll be a tight game, rightly so. It's why I was looking forward to pre-season this time around, we're not playing some minnow Asian team.

Pjanic is a player I hugely admire, classy playmaker, who is under-rated by a few. If Iturbe is there, I would like to see him in action.

Pjanic will play only half an hour. Garcia said so yesterday

Is this on skysports? Excited for this. Just hope we don't follow up a good performance with a terrible one.

Roma are quality, will expect a tough game. Wouldn't be surprised to see us lose. Any Roma watchers here?

I'm the 1% who said 2-1 Roma.

Hi, I'm a Roma watcher :)

I watched Roma-Liverpool, very very slow match. I don't think this one will be much different

Roma will play without the regular midfield, but with 3 on 4 of the regular defenders

I see, hmm, how about Iturbe or Salih Ucan?

There are high expectations on UCAN. In the summer games so far has thoroughly impressed, but they are clearly not indicative. Many hope will be a new Pjanic

Iturbe is a great talent, will play for sure, but it's only a week who trains with us. In the game against Liverpool was often out of the match, although he has done some good play

I see, well this is a Roma team in transformation, this won't be there first team then whereas United have the majority of there first team here ready.

Yeah time to cut our losses on big money signing Rafael. We might be able to get half the fee back for him if we're lucky, what with him being 24 and one of the best right backs in the league.

Made me :lol:

Fingers crossed hopefully we could get 250k for him from some League One side.

What Roma starting line up do you expect?

I think this, very similar to that against Liverpool:

Skorupski ;
Somma, Benatia , Castan , Cole ;
Uçan, Keita , Nainggolan ;
Iturbe , Totti , Ljajic .
alternatives are:
Romagnoli (Castan)
Florenzi (Ucan)
Paredes (Keita)
Destro (Totti)
Sanabria (Llajic)

Don't think it is, though I know they've definitely got at least one of our friendlies though. Not sure which one(s), think it's the Inter game.

How has he been so far? I remember a big hype about him last season, looks very promising.

Almost everyone in rome rely on Iturbe. It has features perfect for our game: a lot of defense, and fast counterattacks

I'm curious to see him tonight, but I know it is still early to tell

It will be interesting playing 443 with 3 at the back, we saw massive amounts of space between the wing backs and 3 defenders early in the LA Galaxy game. I think it was more down to the fact they were getting used of the new formation. Tonight will be a real test though against a better opposition and better wingers.

I watched the manager's Holland team in the World Cup and from that I think I'm going to be his type of player

Bold words from Cleverley. I'm curious to see if he can put his money where his mouth is. Still not sure what he means by his type of player. Is he refering to a specific role, something similar to Nigel de Jong or what.

Nope, all of our matches are on MUTV.

Probably 'average but made to look quite good by the system'. He's been watching Blind, Wijnaldum, Kuyt etc. ;)

Really? I could have sworn I saw an advert for one of our friendlies on SSN.
Not sure about that but MUTV definitely have exclusive rights to all of United's friendlies'.

I just checked and you're right. It's just that Sky are showing the other matches in this pre-season tournament.

Thanks for posting this bringing such good memory!
I hope LvG and some new lads had watched this together. He would have said, 'all beautiful goals"... And they are. And Carrick, Smith, and Evra all got on the scoresheet on top on the usual suspects Rooney and Ronnie. Thanks to Sir Alex we played such attacking football.
We are United, we do what we want! I was guessing 3-1 today but can score more if the lads aren't that tired from Wednesday. Can't wait.

I don't think its wise to rest him. He will probably play for 45 mins though this time round :) LvG want his system (philosophy) to be implement so he will try different combination for sure.
I also truly believe that all players want to play and keep the winning momentum going. It's exciting time and every game is a opportunity for them to shine.

I haven't seen this word in any of the posts yet, I searched, but we must all remember where this game is being played in relation to ALTITUDE. As I understand it, this game is in Denver, also known as the "Mile High City."

This could be a very tough game for both teams in terms of conditioning.... the thin air could make this a boring game over the last 20-30 minutes.

We only have Fletcher, Herrera, and Cleverley as natural CMs. Clevs is playing the 90, so the other two will split the game as I can't see Fletch doing two full games in a few days.

Its not a joke. Rafael is a sicknote. You know this. Varela is 21 this season. Its not crazy to suggest LVG could promote him to the first team proper. I think he's a better defender than Rafael, his potential is huge. Keep laughing.
I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you were making some lame joke. As others have pointed out, "cutting our losses with Rafael" would be insanity given his age and quality even taking into account his propensity for getting injured and the odd red card. Don't want to derail this thread, but Rafael still has plenty to offer us going forward.

Good point. Also should make for some interesting goal kicks.

Confused by the time differences. Does the match start in 2 hours?
