If Cleverley can't gain confidence from being named captain under van Gaal, then there is no hope for him. Big test for him tonight.

Exactly! people laughing at him being captain but its obviously to boost his confidence as well as playing him for 90 mins. Can blame no one if he fecks this one up.

Honestly I hope things go Cleverley's way a bit, I've got faith that LvG could turn him around. Last season, like most players, he took a battering. I'm not going to have a hissy fit over a young English lad getting a chance to impress.

I actually quite like that. The poor lad's had a horrible year or so, becoming the butt of everyone's jokes despite the fact that he's only ever been average, not actually shit as everyone seems to have convinced each other. If he was an Everton midfielder he'd probably be quite popular on here, but because he's at United and has had a few games for England everyone's decided he's the worst footballer of all time or something.

I don't expect Van Gaal to turn him into a brilliant midfielder, but he's always been a decent pass-and-move enabler, held back by the fact that there's not been anyone in United's midfield to enable (excluding Carrick for that one season). He'll look decent under Van Gaal, just like similar 'filler' players like Blind, Wijnaldum, Clasie etc have in the Netherlands team.
I agree 100%!!!!!
I want Cleverley is a success at Old Trafford and that we see the Cleverley of the 2011-2012 season (The first 6 games) under Van Gaal

But even it's just a friendly and he plays 90 minutes...Cleverley should never get the captains armband
I would rather see Rooney and maybe Jones for 45 minutes

4 hours.

Does the time in the header on this page not tell you the KO time in your location?

It shows BST in the header if you are not logged in; I am not sure if it is intentional or not. It changed to my location time once I logged in.

I think to get into an uproar about who wears the captains armband in a friendly is just a bit silly. It's not that mental, Dong being part of the guard of honour at Stamford Bridge a few years back is far more mental.

Let's face it, it is surprising to say the least. Maybe he's one of the players who's adapting to his methods quicker. I'm convinced there will be many surprises this season in that regard.

It truly doesn't matter who gets the captain's armband in a friendly.

Whilst I'm sure LVG is creating a positive atmosphere for him to try and impress in, he's also quite obviously getting the armband because he's the only senior player who'll be on the pitch for the whole game.

It would also be a statement to the rest of the team as well. LVG's willing to give everyone an opportunity, and they've all got a clean slate. Past history means nothing.

But what if he freezes during the big moment when he's asked to choose head or tails before kick off, what then? It's a disaster waiting to happen, I'm dreading it.

No armband for Rooney, please!!!
Someone who made the comments he made about the club in 2010 does not deserve the armband. I'd rather see Jones or Evans or even DDG get the armband.

Maybe LVG sees a lot of quality and potential in Cleverley. Maybe he will not sign Vidal because he wants to give Cleverley a chance.

It's a fair comment, it's not like he's done anything of note for the club since making those comments, is it? What do goals and contributing performances on the pitch really matter in football anyway.

Anyway, it's nice that Van Gaal's created a slightly more positive atmosphere to give him his chance in (choosing him for the press conference, being positive towards him in that press conference, making him captain), rather than expecting him to just suddenly turn it on after a year of unmerited victimisation.

I have to say I still can't believe that Moyes didn't come out more strongly in his defence when he was getting all that silly heat over the England squad (for which he's almost always been reliably decent). Fergie would have been all over that like a bad rash.

Great post.

The part in bold I totally agree with and can be another failing added to the long list under Moyes.

Not this again.

What is wrong with my comment? Rooney does not deserve to be United captain.

BTW, for the past few years he has always choked in the big matches. He just is not captaincy material. His comments make him ineligible for 'pity captaincy' either.

Yes that's intentional, BST is the default time if you're not logged in.

Cleverley is the type of player who will find a new lease of life under LvG and he'll relish it. He's one of the players I can't wait to see how they get on under the new regime.

Yeah, we've been over that for quite some time. Check the Rooney thread.

I think we're drifting off topic.

True. Moyes' handling of the situation was poor. He dropped Cleverly for around a month after the Liverpool drubbing if I remember right, just around the time this nonsense was going on saying something like "He was not needed.".

It's really not. A friendly in which he is the only senior player on the pitch for the entire game. It makes perfect sense.

I think it's a good thing, I was just pointing out that a few posters would be surprised, hence the odd Green smiley from some. I'm not a big fan but I want him to do well. Same goes for Kagawa under van Gaal. He'll know exactly how to use them.

Look how much Henderson improved last season. Fergie also rated Tom very highly - he was one of the reasons he held off signing a CM.
It was firmly tongue in cheek but I still think that's insane given our midfield issues.

I'm hoping to see van Persie and Januzaj return at some point during the tour. Not too fussed about Fellaini but it will be interesting to see how van Gaal utilizes him.

Agreed. Will be interesting to see where Januzaj will play- out wide, as the number 10 or maybe upfront. Not really sure what role Fellaini is going to play.

Or may be as a wing-back? Admittedly he is defensively not up to it now, but he could be a great wing back in such a system.

Cheers! I just wanted to alert you to any possible bugs. What a wonderful job you have done with the match thread by the way. Truly fantastic! I can code, by you are the fecking matrix hahaha.

He's probably my biggest worry about the 351 formation. He's best as the sort of flexible AM/winger that you get in a 4231, and the 351 has nothing like that. He's not quite as dangerous playing as a true #10 (and not as good as Mata there), and there are really no other wide/AM roles in that formation.

I suppose you might be able to get away with playing him in the wingback position but as a proper winger, provided there was a defensively-minded midfielder like Fletcher who could cover for him. But even that isn't ideal because a wingback is supposed to always stay very wide, whereas Januzaj is best when he can mix it up, going wide sometimes and coming central sometimes.

Or Van Gaal is just assessing Cleverley ability.... We are not particular stock with quality and option at the moment in this role.

Nevertheless, I hope Cleverley does well. As I said before, his potential is similiar to scott parker and I do not see his ceiling reaching higher than that.

Clev will make us all forget about losing out to Vidal this year. Not right away, obviously, but I think we'll eventually all come to realise that he is the right partner for Herrera in the midfield as he won't float around the pitch as much.
Because he's a lazy bastard.

Not really true from the last match. James did come inside when there was space and score two.

I actually think Shaw struggled at left wing back. He got the ball in a very advanced position quite a few times in the first half and did not know what to do with it (There was one instance where he got in behind the defence and then passed the ball back). Someone like Januzaj would certainly not have that problem.
