Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

Yeah because it isn't like many deals get done on transfer deadline day...
Big transfers rarely do. Berbatov and Rooney signed for us very late on but those were complicated deals that took a while to complete (Berbatov) and a transfer we planned for a season later but had to jump in quicker because Newcastle had made a bid (Rooney). To expect us to complete 2-3 big transfers in a matter of two weeks that are left until the transfer window closes is a bit silly IMO when you consider how slow we are in the market. It's been 7 weeks since the window began and our only transfers have been made before then.

I think we will sign 1 more player and call it quits. We will sell more than that.

That assumes that we are only starting working on the deals now. And we could we working on complex deals now which is why they are taking longer.

I'd say we need 3 transfers to remain to the level we should be at. I doubt we could be looking at 3 players for whom deals are so complicated that we cannot possibly close it before the season starts. Some clubs would actually prefer to sell their players earlier so they can find replacements, I'd actually say most of them would rather do it this way so they don't have to worry.

I think it's safe to say we won’t be doing any good business this summer. At this point we will have to pay over the odds for everyone, simply because every club knows we’re entering desperate buy mode. It applies also to selling players.

We have done good business this Summer. We have signed a talented Spanish midfielder who was instrumental for his side getting their first CL spot in 15 years and a supremely talented English left back.

yep that will be the United PR machine at work if we don't sign any more players before deadline day. "we've done very good business, got great players at in today's football world have real Value, Shaw, Herrera....and remember, of course Mata."

Not to mentioned rid ourselves of a significant amount of useless deadwood, with more to go.

Saw a quote yesterday that we have done the least business of all prem clubs - is this true?

Shaw and Herrera I think are both good signings. But with Vidic, Rio, Evra and Giggs going Im not sure we have strengthened, but its a fair argument that these guys needed to go to allow others to progress.

Ridiculous considering, we have also probably let the most experience go, and potentially had the worst form and relative position out of all prem clubs.

I don't just want us to sign rubbish for the sake of it. But as Scholes said, we are in need of a CM, Kroos and Fabregas have both been and go and it looks as if we weren't in for him (quoting scholes who you would think is in the know relatively).

Yeah I agree, although we haven't done enough (considering how the others have strengthened) in my opinion.

I meant any more business in the next 2 weeks.

Trimming the squad down to 20 outfield players this season would be very good job. I imagine our wage bill would be reduced significantly with three high earners already out of the club and more likely to go (Nani, Anderson, Hernandez).

I rarely explain myself as I find myself astounded how others do not grasp simple logic, but thank you for demolishing @Pexbo the ArturoWUMPET and his weapons of mass destruction minions.

That I agree with. We realistically needed 4-5 transfers with all departures, preferably of considerable quality knowing that among departures were Vidic and Evra, two key players for us even in the last few seasons. BTW nice location.

So you're ignoring the list of big names that was posted above that all happened very late in the window?

Sensational ignorance, Kevin.

Obviously not ... you've already spent £64m on two players.

I've no idea if what he said is true but assuming "amount of business done" = " amount of money spent" is a bit dim. In terms of the amount of work done by whoever is in charge of buying/selling players it doesn't matter whether they cost 5m or 50m. Totting up the total number of players traded, both bought and sold, would make a lot more sense.

3 transfers of top quality, as you mentioned, would’ve taken us to title challenge. CB, CM, and a winger. With our current crop I hope we will get 4th.

We are like dr zoidberg in futurama, when he is given 300 dollars he is bragging what he can spend it on, mama a billionaire blows her nose on the 300 dollars and throws it away. That is what we are dr zoidberg thinking look at how much money I can spend, when in reality the scale on what billionairs like mama can spend, they can just blow their nose on that much money

That is ed Woodward for you, dr zoidberg not realising what he has spent, is nothing compared to what Real Madrid can spend their money on. But in Woodward eyes 120 million is lot of money to pay out over 3 transfer windows when it's not that much. 120 million is peanuts for the clubs looking to win a league title in England and Spain, and until this club realises that, we will always be left behind

I don't think we need a winger that much with 352 in place. I doubt we are going to change into a 433 this season, not with van Persie, Mata and Rooney in the squad. If we buy a winger we have to drop at least one of them, preferably 2 because 433 requires two wingers and none of them are suited to that role, which means we'll have spent €40m+ on someone like Di Maria and have to drop another €40m to accommodate him. I used to think we needed a winger but with new formation I don't. We do need a right sided wing back, Rafael will probably miss at least half the games.

CM and CB are a must. Defensive midfielder and a ball-playing left sided defender that is.

Which part of Kraków do you live in?

I keep thinking back to Paddy Crerand's chat with Rooney during pre-season tour. Rooney was supposedly very excited about some mystery player United were going to sign.

Not just journos who talk shite, eh? :D

But they didn't invest even for fourth place. We seem way behind our rivals both in quality and depth. We are gonna fight for fourth spot with 3 other
teams( liverpool, spurs and everton) which have good transfer.
The other teams have made good signings, we have paid a premium for good signing but if we paid a premium for the world class signing we have been linked with all summer(Vidal incase anyone's been in a cave for several weeks) we could have been way ahead, but I think the way we have conducted our business so far suggests to me that 4th place will be satisfactory for us this season.

Next summer if it goes like this summer then that will give a clearer indication of our plans...

Really hope we've not pissed LVG already. Imagine hiring a top class manager and passing him off this early with your incompetence at finishing deals off.

Sources have also said Van Gaal is getting increasingly impatient about the lack of transfer activity. Although Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera arrived this summer, both of the deals were effectively finalised last season, meaning there have been no real new buys since last season ended.

Van Gaal did sign off on those two players, but he expected to have the majority of United's business done by Friday -- the day before they face Swansea City at Old Trafford to open the new campaign.

The Dutch manager was said to be particularly agitated at the failure to complete a deal for new Barcelona signing Thomas Vermaelen, given that United for a long time believed his arrival was virtually assured.

Louis van Gaal’s frustrations in the transfer market have reached new heights after his pursuit of Argentina defender Marcos Rojo was stalled by a row between the 24-year-old’s agent and his club Sporting Lisbon.

With the Barclays Premier League season due to start when United host Swansea at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime, the club have now not signed a player since they spent more than £50million on Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera in the last week of June.

It is understood Van Gaal is growing increasingly irritated by United’s failure to land targets and last week saw interest in Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen come to nothing when the 28-year-old moved from Arsenal to Barcelona.

Entirely understandable from Van Gaal's point of view; he'll presumably have walked into United expecting a club of this stature to have among the very best negotiators in the business at its disposal. As it is, we're less than 24 hours from the start of the new season, 17 days from the close of the window, and the current squad is weaker than the one which finished 7th back in May.

I think it is easy for fans to see just how good a team woody and david gill would have made in the current transfer market. One handling the sponsors while the other focused totally on the manager's transfer targets.

How is Rojo our fault, and id anything Juve are playing hardball as you would expect.

If Woody is going to piss Roma off with late bids, I'd rather he do it over Pjanic than a 27 year old center back.

Some of tomorrow's papers going with us battling with Wolfsburg and Spurs for Fredy Guarin as an alternative to Vidal. Inter seem to be hawking him around all Summer which is a good indicator that we shouldn't be in for him.

Neville says he expects us to sign a couple of CB's and shortly after talking about midfield in his article he say he expects us to deliver and get 2 players that will "protect the club from criticism". Dunno if these 2 are different from the CB's he thinks are coming.

Some shopping opportunities in Spain. All of these are easy (and cheap!) targets because their clubs have given their agents permission to find them new clubs.

The odd (old) familiar name in there, including Ever Banega - going cheap to whoever can summon up the enthusiasm (probably Sevilla if they can get a few million together) and Song. Anybody see anything they fancy for us?

Isn't it pretty clear that we're done signing midfielders? We've paid £30m-odd for Herrera, and Fletcher has been appointed vice-captain (yeah, he's like a new signing :p). We also have Carrick back in October, and Cleverley about. If Fellaini actually does go to Napoli, then yeah we would be short on numbers, but it doesn't look much like that'l happen. There are only 2 places in centre-mid to occupy, and 10-odd matches less than we're used to. It would make sense to just go with what we have until a player like Strootman is available.

Obviously, any move on an attacker would be odd. In those front 3 positions, we've got the obvious 4 strikers, then Mata, Kags, Januzaj, Zaha - the youngsters Wilson and Lawrence.

It's just the defence where we're absolutely shot to pieces. I'm fully expecting us to be linked with every left-footed CB until we actually get one. Even after that, we might have a lack of depth, depending on how much trust you have in the young players like Blackett and James.

From that sort of thinking, I'd pretty much disregard any rumours we hear about Vidal (sorry) or Guarin (your welcome), and laugh in the face of links with Di Maria and kind. With 3 tested centre-backs in a 3-at-the-back formation, it's clear where we'll end up spending.

Memories of last season and the announcement that our primary aim was Rooneys contract :(

Before the summer even started, we all agreed that we need 5 or more top signings to get back into top 4 and we all knew Herrera and Shaw although really good players weren't enough to fill all our gaps. Anything else is just wishful thinking. If we don't do this now City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and I might even add Everton and Spurs will keep going further ahead of us.
