Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

I feel less enthusiastic about this season than I did a few weeks ago. Without a couple more signings I doubt we will make the top 4.

One thing we have to really hope happens and I think it will, that we have the same manager next season as we do this season. We can not go through another summer of a new manager needing to access the squad to see what is needed. LvG and Woodie need to be having serious discussions on an ongoing basis about the plans for January and next summer and Woodie needs to start his work early.

There is a big chance we will still not be in the CL after this season and whatever moves we are going to make to get us back in the CL and competing for the PL title will need to get done and get done quickly next summer.

Delaney has no clue. He is just someone who jumps on the bandwagon of other journos.

Wouldn't say he knows anymore than you or me, he's one of those journalists that gets excited as he's a United fan and that influences his "work", should really be able to remain neutral and just report football news.

Would be nice to finally find that magical number 7. Both Vidal and Di Maria fitting the criteria. One with abilities and pace, other with strength and character.

I'm just glad that Louie has balls and acknowledged the problems in defense, midfield and on the wings. That's a clear sign for me things shall progress in the right direction.

Tactic works, training methods are like a breath of fresh air, players are motivated and happy... the only thing that we seem to lack and it's really only one thing is conviction on the transfer market. Improve that one thing and we're back to where Sir Alex was celebrating his biggest achievements with his club.

We're not far from achieving certain perfection with that kind of genius as our manager but continuation of serious decisions needs to be made in the transfer department. There's simply no escaping from that. Last season kicked us in the ass and we should be learning tons from that experience.

I've just realized "Ed Woodward - as useless as a chocolate tea pot or the next coming of the messiah?" thread has more pages than "Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014", which was started a month before Ed's one...

It shouldn’t be like that.

My personal opnion is that the lack of transfer business we have done so far is unacceptable.

-We have lost a ton of experience and haven't brought any in to compensate.
-We only have 5 defenders in the team of whom 2 are youngsters that have hardly played for us in the first team and the other 3 aren't exactly reliable class players. Currently I'd say we have the weakest defence of all top teams in the PL.
-The only additions we have made have been Shaw and Herrera and we have overpaid massively for them, Shaw is already injurred for a month and we basically don't have good cover for him on the leftback either apart from another youngster that hasn't played for us in the first team yet.
-Our midfield is still weak as feck and altough Herrera looks like a decent player he alone won't solve the issue. Meanwhile Carrick, the only other good midfielder we have is injurred for like 3 months.
-Almost all players that were so disappointing and should have been moved out are still here.

All this on the back of one of our weakest seasons ever were we missed out on CL football and finished 7th. We should be trying as hard as we can to leave this behind us and make steps forward to join the top of the PL again. We can not afford to drop out of the top 4 again and we can not afford to let the gap between us and clubs like Chelsea, City, even Arsenal, let alone Real, Barca, Bayern etc on european level become that much bigger again.

Last season started in a similar fashion, I have balmed Moyes and his dithering for it but now I don't know who exactly to blame. I would like to know if LVG is responsible for this and if he isn't I would like him to make that known to us fans in somekind of way. I dearly hope that if our business isn't improving in the coming days or weeks that LVG would lash out at the ones responsible for it. I hope he lets the club know things can't go on like this, because if he doesn't than I'll be making the assumption he is fine with all this and this implies that failure to reach our targets, which is CL football at the very least, will be blamed on him as it was also blamed on Moyes.

Moyes got the chop because he was clearly out of his depth, but sacking Moyes for me does not solve the problem, problems run deeper with the ownership of the club, and Ed woodward and his lackeys. He comes out a month ago and says, we can match what Madrid payed for bale, or what barca payed for suarez, its august 14th here we are, short at the back, short on quality in the midfield and does not look like we are buying anyone. The worst part of the woodward statement, he says watch this space. Its one thing learning lessons, but too come out say this shit and we go into the new season with basically the same squad has last season. There are defiantly problems in our boardroom, in their inability to sign the players needed, this was happening when we were champions of england, the biggest stepping stone in any clubs ability to sign players, if you cannot do that when you are at the peak of the mountain, you are screwed.

If we don't sign 3 more players in this transfer window(one of them being of the level of Vidal or Di Maria), something is really long. After the last season we had, after the kind of money we make and after EW's comments.
Some one will have to be answerable for that:
1) EW for just not being competitive or decisive.
2) LvG signing. He could only come late this season due to the world cup and on top of that he needed to weeks to judge the holes in the squad, which is fair but combined with the delay in his arrival, it has left us in a desperate position. I hope things changes in the next two weeks.
Cause we ATM are the EPL team to have signed the least number of players.

Five defensive positions in the line up
Starters: Rafael Jones CB Evans Shaw
Subs: Valencia Smalling CB Blackett Young
We clearly need two CBs and one top class CM.
We also needed a winger and a genuine full back, but that can wait.
We desperately need two CBs and 1 CM

Woodward and the glazers seem to think the club can make a top 4 without the need for another few defenders and a midfielder, remember we went 7 years without signing a CM so nothing surprises me

I would REALLY love to see that list Van Gaal supposedly handed to Woodward.

Then I'd love to see a "reason this didn't happen" reply next to each name.

And they told you this via teleconference or during lunch ? These guys could spend a billion and we'd still get these shit generalisations from fans. Nevermind the fact that we have spent £120m in the last twelve months and could still spend more in the next couple of weeks. We are all frustrated with how things are turning out,no one is impressed, but has it crossed your mind that the challenges we are facing could be operational, related more to the instability in the dugout than a deliberate attempt to do an Arsenal ? We have bought a teenage leftback for thirty million when half of that could have bought a more experienced one who is currently as good or even better .....

If woodward fails he needs sacking or a director of football needs bringing in to take control of transfers. The same teams that done us last year at OT especially will come back this season and expect the same. Really can't understand the clubs transfer policy.

We won't sign anyone of note anymore so late in the window. Leagues are about to start and teams will not have enough time to replace key players.

We will do well to salvage what we can and get de Jong and Blind and count ourselves satisfied.

Looking back to previous years, I'm struggling to find a player that you'd class as "a big name" that moved this late in the window.

1. Hummels - Think I had the wrong number, lots of laughing on the other end of the line. Will try again next week.
2. Di Maria - Kept asking me to meet him in Paris, which seemed a bit bent. Not for me.
3. Blind - He must be, what, 50 years of age? I'm starting to worry about Louis now.
4. De Vrij - Bloody Feyenoord wanted a reasonable price for him. Too reasonable if you ask me. They're up to something. Best leave him to Lazio just in case we waste roughly the same amount of money we did on Bebe.
5. Vidal - Fairly confident about this trade, I have to say. I left a pretty spectacular voicemail for Mr. Marrotta, just letting him know we're nearly ready on our end. I expect he'll listen to it in the next few days. Fingers crossed. Must let Louis know we're making progress.
6. Vermaelen - Bloody Louis loves a little joke, doesn't he? Yeah, course I'll bid €15m for him, mate. You want me to chuck in some add ons and all?
7. Cavani - All right, strictly I scribbled this one on the end of the list, but have you seen his fecking cheekbones? I wouldn't mind trading him in. Hard.

Plenty of big transfers get done later in the transfer window like Bale, Berbatov, Robinho, Ozil. It's hardly anything new.

That ugly little gnome Woodward wants fecking kneecapping.

Well, I do know that we have two weeks left till the window closes. But why do we have to leave this so late? This only adds to the desperation and mess.
So LvG's late arrival can be the reason. But, EW did say that he has been in touch with LvG about potential targets for a while and they have been working in the background. So why do we have to leave things so late? We do pay money that can be considered too much to wrap deals up, for ex. Rio, Rooney, Berba, Herrera and Shaw, so I don't think we are waiting to play the bargain game.
There certainly is value in getting the deals done earlier. The players get integrated sooner and the season can be kicked off with a proper squad. We are starting the season with no genuine wing back in a system that needs two wing backs due to injuries. Now, if we had wrapped up our deals a week or two before today, we would have had capable backups ready.
I really don't know why we are delaying things. Especially after EW's comments. aaaaaah

Really hope we've not pissed LVG already. Imagine hiring a top class manager and passing him off this early with your incompetence at finishing deals off.

I think the Glazers have taken the Old Arsenal business model, get into the top 4 and everyone's happy.

The money for coming 1st and 4th ain't that much considering how much money needs to be spent to come first. So if the Glazers can spend minimum and get a good ROI then we dont need to spend 100's of millions like Chelsea and Citeh.

So I think the Glazers will be happy coming 4th like Arsenal do(did) as it still offers them good value on investment.

From a fans point of view it's a disgrace and if I find myself celebrating 4th like we used to celebrate winning the league then that will be a sad day.

The only way I see we can return to the top is if we get taking over by a sugar daddy or the glazers put there money where there mouth is...

Thoughts please?
But they didn't invest even for fourth place. We seem way behind our rivals both in quality and depth. We are gonna fight for fourth spot with 3 other
teams( liverpool, spurs and everton) which have good transfer.

Yeah because it isn't like many deals get done on transfer deadline day...

I would be disappointed if we don't get in 2 more players in. (CM and CB of absolute top quality). With us being out of Europe this season and less games to play, we should be really ambitious and go for the league title. I understand we have a new manager, and its difficult for someone new to the league to win it immediately but there is no harm in being ambitious (which from LvG's own words he is) and go for the title.

As it stands, with the squad we have, we are competing for 4th and still lacking in numbers in key areas. Its just a matter of whether we as a club are happy with being 4th or spend the money to get the 2 players in that we really need. With 15 days to go, time is ticking.

Just off the top of my head Berbatov, Tevez, Robinho, Ozil, Arshavin, Suarez...
