Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

We really need to start being ruthless more than anything. We need to put a certain standard and if a player doesn't perform consistently at a certain level that's required, he's sold no matter the price he was signed for. It's these declining standards that have led us further down the table and our rivals further up.
Agreed. Basically we need to start operating like other top clubs do. Because we're not any different to them anymore. We were different due to Sir Alex's overall impact, guarantee of success, and continuity, but that's gone.

I just want to see some sort of action this week. Every week for the last month we been saying this is the decisive week where we will sign a few players. A week before our next game. Just sign the 3 or 4 players we need.

any realistic rumours from reliable sources? :(

people saying we need 3/4, tbh I think that's generous, we need 2 CB's at least, 2 CM's at least & 2 WB's as well.

I agree but is there anybody that wants to buy them ?
We need to recoup some money back of them.
All the transfer dealings both in and out should of been done before that season started.

Quite a few teams would want Hernandez. Nani could move to Italy or even back to Sporting.

I doubt anyone would buy Fellaini unless it is a loan. As for Anderson, I think he'd be seeing out his contract here.

nobody will sign Nani because he is on a long term deal so we would want too much for him

nobody will sign Ando because he is always injured, best we can hope for is another set of mugs like Fiorentina will take him on loan

nobody will sign Fellaini because I don't think we are selling him anyway.

Hernandez, well, right now he is doing himself no favours as he can't score for love nor money.

Two CB and a CM would make a massive difference as still have out current first choice wing backs to come back

we need better back up for the WB's as well though...we need two CM's imo, Fletcher is very hit & miss for us thesedays & Cleverely/Fellaini aren't good enough for a team that wants to challenge.

The two wing backs are good enough IMO. Many we could improve but it isn't a priority.

If we sign another CM our backups would become Carrick, Fletcher and Fellaini. I think that is ok.

We are going to be alright aren't we? Someone hold me and tell me it's going to be alright.

:)

There are 2 examples very close by, namely Liverpool and Arsenal that tell me we won't unless we invest what is required. Both those clubs experienced provide example of how easy it is to fall off the gravy train even just after a few seasons of team mismanagement.

Buy a top centre-back, midfielder and a winger. Revert back to 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Going by yesterday I only enjoyed the game when Adnan playing on the wing was on the ball. Everything around him was too static and predictable.

After what's shaping up to be another shambolic transfer window yet again, I think we're in desperate need of a Director of Football. They may not be the most popular thing around here but something has to be done, if nothing changes then I can see us continuing to have theses pathetic transfer windows year after year.

No idea why this hasnt been implemented already. All over Europe it's quite common to have one.

We need a Levy than director of football. The clashes between director of football and manager are inevitable and will especially be a problem with Van Gaal who will want to be in full control.
I also feel that we need same management combo for period of more than a year for transfers to work smoothly. Some few transfers to RM aside, other clubs generally work extensively during closed window towards deals. They aren't as simple as they look for other clubs. The change in manager and World cup has hampered our business to great deal where we are finding it tough to get working on plan B and C. I hope we somehow get those 2-3 signings which will help us back to top 4 as then next summer, Woodward or anyone, transfer business will be smoother.

The squad as it is will struggle to make the top 4. That in turn would make it harder to get back into the top 4 again.

We must take the hit now. We need to spend another £100m odd before the close of the window. Too many average footballers.

Best teams shouldn't be building midfields around Fletch, and Rooney has been a pretend 'world class forward' for a while too in my opinion. Can't go past a man, can't run away from a man and an inconsistent touch. He isn't hard enough to defend against, and should focus on being in the box because he isn't good enough outside it. He can finish generally, and has good set pieces - but 40/50 yards from goal, if it isn't a cross field pass he is an ordinary player.

Some big decisions need to be made with this squad. Seems not enough was learned from last season.

why do you think we have waited so long to do so?

We won't be signing 3 or 4 players. 7 weeks were not enough to complete even one deal (I believe Shaw and Herrera had been sorted way before) and suddenly we are expected to complete all? We might sign one player until the end of window, that is all.

you may have better inside knowledge than me , but I would of thought there is ample time left to complete what ever deals we want.

To be fair I'm a bit pissed that we spent £38m on Mata we clearly had no room for and £30m on Shaw which has eaten up a large chunk of our transfer budget. I still think Herrera will prove worth every penny because he is exactly the sort of player we needed but instead of Mata we could have got a classic winger or another central midfielder - as good as Mata is fitting him into a team with van Persie and Rooney was always going to be a nightmare. And as for Shaw, we could have got a different full back for half the price and spend the difference on a defensive midfielder.

We haven't spent our money wisely. £140m should have been enough to rebuild the team yet we spent it on 5 players with only 1 being an instant improvement to the team.

No inside knowlege just observation how slow we are in the market since Woodward got here. We take absolute ages.

Kind of agree. I thought after signing Mata we would have sold Rooney. Fitting Mata, RvP and Rooney into the same team on paper looked difficult and so it has been. We've spent a fortune on players and our squad is still a mess. Doesn't seem to be any plan in place as to who should be coming or going. We've spent a lot of money and time on youngsters and 'punts' like Bebe the last fee years when we've needed world class players. We are supposed to be one of the biggest clubs in the world and yet we are starting games with mediocre Fletcher and Young, youth players who may only reach Stoke level, plus Smalling and Jones who are also far from the finished article and may not ever be. A world class team can accommodate one or two 'projects' yet it seems half our line up is made up of players who would struggle to get in an Everton or Spurs side let alone Bayern or Madrid.

We should finally move to a DoF model IMO, otherwise it will be in danger of going like this for a while. Moyes came with no plan whatsoever and first spent £28m on a poor player and then £38m on a world class player we did not need but thought he would bail him out. Now we have signed two players with van Gaal's permission and absolutely no one reccomended by van Gaal. We have no strategy in place, no long term plan, this is awful.

Year after year we keep showing our incompetence in the transfer market, something has to change and it has to be quick. We must be the most incompetent side in the market from all the other clubs which are considered to be at the top which we currently aren't. Even when we had just won the Champions League and a premiership trophy year after year we still found it very difficult to make signings.

If the situation doesn't change in the next 2 weeks, I can see us doing a Liverpool.

Real Madrid spent close to that in the summer of 2009 on Ronaldo, Kaka and Alonso. Over three windows it's not unprecedented at all.
We dont have the money to shell out and buy 5 or 6 world class players in one lump.
Its going to take years at least to build a title winning team again.

I think it already has begun, We were just fortunate to have Fergie.

Yes but we need cover otherwise we end up like we did yesterday and play lingard at right wing back and eventually Ashley young at left back

the problem? the glazers

Arsenal didn't fall too far, but I would hate it if we fell as far as Liverpool did.

We can't change that as fans. It would be possible in Italy and Germany as owners fear the fans but how can we have any effect on the Glazers? Would they really care as long as the club is a profitable business for them? Sometimes I feel like the main goal of Manchester United is to sell merchandize and not to play football, with the players acting as an advertisement cost.

Realistically the best solution for us is to become galactico's as well...the only way to survive within their thought processes.

Ah but that would cost money, something they have a problem with.

They want to make money off the back of the clubs success, but not put the money back into the clubs transfers. Say what anyone likes about perez, he is signing the checks for these players, and I doubt they would keep hold of fellaini fletcher anderson valencia nani young cleverley kagwa. The club seems very tolerant in keeping hold of passengers, if it means they do not have to spend too much

The glazers view - make money, spend just enough

That IS the main goal.
I think people underestimate the size of United. We were very successful and became fashionable back when there were fans to acquire, and when football really became popular, and latched onto.

City could win the league for the next five years, and they still won't compare financially or in terms of fans. We're huge. The fans are there, the deals are in place, and we're a fashionable brand, almost synonymous with football in parts of the world.

The Glazers know this. The name of this club alone is enough to make tons of money. They really don't need the sort of success we've become used to, or expect as fans.

Football, and being the best team on the pitch, is secondary. They've held us back, but Sir Alex masked it.

I think we will sign players between now and the end of the transfer window but I just hope we get prime targets rather than like last year where it was all last minute.

I think Herrera will do well but may well need to adapt and he desperately needs a competent parter with vidal being the obvious dream choice. What we don't need is squad players as we have plenty of these, we need players to come in and improve the first team.

Shaw will also come good but he is a long term project and you have to expect a few years with mistakes before he fully matures. In essence we have lost 3 of our long standing back four and have not really adequately replaced them. We need at the very least another CB. The ones we have are not the best with injuries and also prone to the odd error from time to time. We need someone who can lead from the back.

Also if we are insistant on playing wing backs we need to look at specialists. Despite doing well in pre season we never know if the old Young (possibly a contradiction in terms) will reappear and the fact we started with Lingard massively out of position doesnt help.

In attacking positions we have plenty of options but we need the players behind them who can provide a stable base, as well as the attacking nous to feed the ball to our more creative and threatening players.

In my opinion we need a very minimum of 3 players with an outlay of around £100 million. Its a lot to spend considering how much we have spent on Herrera and Shaw but we are just so short of quality in certain areas these signings are essential

why do you think we have waited so long to do so?
Very likely due to the club hoping Jones, Smalling and Evans will fulfil their initial promise. I personally don't think they have progressed as much as we had all hoped.

Even if we're still hopeful they'll all really come on, it would have still been clever to buy one top centre back, and we'd still be playing 2 of them alongside, in this formation.

At the moment it looks an utter clusterf'ck.

This could not possibly be going any worse could it?
It could be more worse before getting better. Frankly I firmly do not think we will sign anyone, IMO the glazer just hope everyone come back from injury.

If the fans actually turned on these owners they'd have to listen. Empty seats in the stands would make them sit up.

I see us signing one or two but my worry is if they are even second in the wishlist of the manager.
