Honestly, I believe we still intend to bring in a lot more players.
At the moment, I'm thinking these are our primary targets:
Hummels (for quality)
Vermaelen (for experience and depth)
Vidal (for quality)
di Maria (for quality)
Depay (for potential)
There will obviously be alternatives and the odds of us getting all of those players is probably quite low. It seems Carvalho is simply a backup in case we don't sign Vidal - I definitely expect us to sign one of them. I could also see us signing De Jong even if we get Vidal. In terms of backup to Hummels, there really aren't any. We can get other cbs, but there are no others of his quality available. There's a lot of talk of De Vrij, but he is not a good defender by any means. I also think Smalling will be leaving after this season. He is terrible with the ball at his feet and Van Gaal's cbs need to be able to play the ball out from defence. Evans and Jones will be fine. Vermaelen is just to replace the experience lost with the departures of Rio and Vida imo. I definitely see us signing at least two cbs. I don't know if the di Maria rumours are true, but I hope they are - an absolutely world class player and, if quotes are to be believed, a Utd fan, which will mean increased effort and commitment. I see us signing Depay without any trouble whatsoever and will be thoroughly shocked if he doesn't join soon after the World Cup. He'll simply be a backup in his first two seasons imo.
In terms of departures:
Anderson, Nani (possibly as part of the Vidal deal), Zaha, Fellaini, Hernandez, Bebé.
We will try to sell Young, but no team will agree to his inflated wage demands. He will barely play next season. Smalling will not be sold in the first season as he will act as backup and he has already adapted to the Premier League. Imo, Van Gaal will not wish to bring so many players without BPL experience in the first year. He'll move to a team like Everton next season.
Carrick will remain as a backup, though he's not the type of player that will suit Van Gaal's style, he will struggle imo. Rooney may also struggle to adapt, though I have no doubt that Van Gaal will want to use him in the first XI. Welbeck will probably impress Van Gaal and surprise him. Provided he doesn't complain about not being played as a striker, I think he will remain here. Januzaj will prosper in Van Gaal's system imo as both Van Gaal's main formations suit him perfectly. I feel Van Gaal will promote some youngsters and use them as backups, including Lingard, Pearson, Powell, Henriquez, Wilson and Janko. I'm undecided on Lawrence atm. De Gea will continue on his impressive form from last season and will benefit from another very good goalkeeping coach.
