Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

I tell you what, Sagna can put a decent cross in. Something our full backs certainly lack.

I could not disagree more with that, he's miles ahead of Eboue and Buttner, I just think he lost a bit of drive because he wants to win things and he knows he won't get that at Arsenal.

You can't be serious. Same level as Buttner?!

If we were to actually pay any money for Sagna people would be upset about it but seeing as there is a potential free move involved people think it's a good idea.

There are better right backs out there we should be looking at. He has more bad games than he does good games and doesn't even put in a decent cross when he gets forward.

I'm presuming most of you watched the FA cup final today? He got turned inside out by a few Hull players down the right side a few times and they weren't even fast! The first thing you expect from your fullback is that he can put in a decent tackle and block a cross.

Shaw is almost a definite. Great move.

Kroos, Fabregas seems possible.

Reus would take, as someone else said, a near world record bid probably. You're talking an absolute minimum of £60m I think.

More like £35-40. Bayren do need to sell him unless he signs a new deal before next summer.

Are you talking about Reus? He plays for Dortmund and I thought his contract goes on a few more years? His release clause next summer is 35M as well, isn't it? So there would be no gain in selling him for that amount this summer, surely.

No, Kroos.

Sagna is solid. Sagna & Shaw would be much welcomed additions to United's defence - perhaps a year too late though. How many years are we going to be playing Smalling or Jones at RB and expecting it not to have a negative impact on the team performance? Unfortunately this year we will need another top centre back at least on top of Sagna and Shaw potentially.

For regular followers of the youth and reserves teams, can one of either Varela or Janko be promoted as Rafael's understudy?

Varela can, imo. Janko has been playing more often as a winger lately so hard to say but probably not ready.
That would be a good thing. Someone from within the set up to step up. Look at Flannagan. He has improved this season. So much that he is now first choice RB for the dippers. I would love for Varela to make the step up this season.

Varela is not ready for Premier League football. I would take him to the tour in August but he should stay with the reserves or he should go on loan to a Championship team.

Make something happen before the WC for God's sake. We'll be sat anxiously awaiting movement during and after the WC.

I suppose it depends on your standards for a backup. A young Danny Simpson wasn't anything special when he backed up Neville (or was it Brown?) and it didn't cause any problems.

Rafael and Fabio were very raw as young players but each were given the opportunity to be backups in the beginning. It might have been fair to say they weren't 'ready' for the EPL, but they were good enough to be backups all the same.

So the Times are reporting that we're after Sagna, it seems as though there is something to it.

I suppose they're looking at him as an affordable quick fix. I've never really paid that much attention to Sagna before, but somebody must think he's better than Rafael.

I'd prefer to play Rafael all the time but we know that won't be the case as he'll probably miss quite a few games due to injuries. Having Sagna as backup would be great, although I think Varela could do the job too

Rafael needs some competition, I think he's one of those players who will benefit from having competition, I remember him stepping up when Neville was still around. Plus, we all know about his injury record.

I don't see Sagna being a logical option at all. LvG's philosophy has been to see what he has at his disposal first including the youth options so I don't see why he'd take a punt on a 31 year-old right-back as a back up who most likely will command a high wage and frankly isn't all that special.

You know, I still don't understand the panning of Buttner. He marked Robben out of the game against Bayern. He's pretty deadly going forward. He gives his all every game and has a lot of heart – something like a Gary Neville. And more than Evra has shown recently.

The bayern game was his best game in a United shirt. But before that he has had a load of defensive lapses. And he really cant cross so all those run forward are not being utilised well.

He's terrible defensively, the worst defender Sir Alex ever bought for me.

Even in the Bayern game he hoofed the ball away every time he got it and their goal came from a cross on his side, he's rubbish. That post about him being deadly going forward as well is just ridiculous.

For me it's somewhere between your interpretation and that of the people panning him. He's certainly not nearly as bad as his reputation on here. At the very least in every game he's played here he's had the edge over Evra of giving 100% and working his socks off. You'd never see him jogging indifferently back while an opposition wide-man tears away down his abandoned wing.

And he's got a certain amount of attacking flair and is direct about it, which I like. Although it's true that his crossing is very poor indeed, which is a non-negotiable failing for a full-back at this club.

He was superb against Bayern, though. He's had three or four really great games like that in his time here, and three or four shockers, and the rest have been mediocre.

I have to agree, I was so excited after his debut but from there on in he's gone downhill.

Buttner looks like a failed winger, and I'd rather have a full-back who can actually defend. The game against West Ham when he was 5 yards behind everyone else, playing Cole (?) onside comes to mind. He can be really appalling at times, and he doesn't make up for it with any great games either.

What are people's thoughts on CB options would you rather sign someone like Hummels a proven world class CB and potentially a relatively unknown partnering him. OR a combination of Mangala and say Benatia, Garay either combination but Hummels being a star player combined with an unknown or two extremely solid and rising stars?

:wenger:
If we are signing a CB, it will be one, and they will partnering Smalling/Evans.

We need one centre back, that is all. As long as he's good then we're fine. There's already an exceptional amount of quality already at the club in this position as it is.

We only need one centre back. If we sign two then Jones, Smalling and Evans will suffer because of that and people will act mystified by the progression of their development. Hopefully it's an experienced, ball-playing centre back in their prime. Hummels would be ideal.

Check his goal/assist ratio in terms of appearances and I reckon you might get a surprise.
