Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

To be honest, apart from Shaw, I now have no idea who we are hoping to sign this summer!
Yep. Complete mystery, I'm going to put it out there I think were sign players but were going to disappointed. I don't think were sign a world class CM we are all crying out for.
I think LVG will carry on the clubs tradition and sign young, hungry upcoming players, which I'm all for, but it won't guarantee to get us back to where we want to be and as quickly - The top of the EPL.

We haven't actually been linked with Hangeland have we? feck me imagine the uproar.

I would imagine Strootman is an absolute given, van Gaal loves him and he seems to think a lot of van Gaal, brilliant player though
Yes, I agree, Strootman is pretty much nailed on. But that also gives us a problem, in that he will need to keep that place in the squad free until Strootman is fit (I've hear anything from September to November) and in the meantime we are potentially relying on the old guard

Hangeland to United!

Fulham need to have a word with themselves though for firing a club legend by email. Amateurs.
They probably need to sharpen their wage bill though now that they are back in the championship

On top of this, with no European football surely the squad will get considerably trimmed down?

And what happens if Strootman has a setback in his recovery or doesn't come back as strong as pre-injury, looses half a yard of pace, or something?

Bit too risky.

I think we will make 4 signings this summer which is good enough. Strootman, Shaw, Konoplyanka/Depay and hopefully a CB. All this talk of us needing 6 major signings to get back to contention is a giant fallacy.

Well no not really. We need two CM's at least.

2 CMs
2 wingers.
A left back.
2 quality center halves
A right back that isnt constantly injured or getting himself sent off.

We definitely can't just wait for Strootman to get fit and sign him in January, we clearly need someone this window as well. I'm praying that someone isn't Clasie.

We'll have to make do with Anderson and Schweini in midfield till Jan. Be grand like.

Is this Clasie lad really as bad as people are making him out to be? He is a starter for the Dutch at the moment isn't he?

I hope we start making some moves soon. We have a lot to do this summer and there's been very little sign of anything positive getting done.

More than likely things are progressing.

Isn't it a good sign that things seem to be handled more discretely than last year? (Daily Fabregas, anyone?)

Moreover, the business for many players of the calibre I assume United to target would be ones playing at the WC, and the transfer business of those guys won't start before their respective team is sent home.

Gee, if Any Mitten's sentence is correct and United actually feels that signing Hummels is the closest, then either there's something seriously wrong with Utd official's feeling, or you don't sign any of the target players.

yeah I know, what a ridiculous thing to think. A big Dortmund player leaving in a transfer window?

When has that ever happened in the past two years?

He's coming mate, deal with it.

Guys, you're too funny. Apparently, nothing what @Sphaero has been telling you about Hummels or the recent interview scraps from him (posted by @Mel_F and myself) ever make it into the Caf's tacit knowledge about this very special player, same as the inconvenient truth that not all player fulfill the prejudice of being after more money.

It's more likely that the trio of Gündogan, Reus, and Subotic join United this summer than Hummels: He'll stay at Dortmund next season, but if you prefer to let your inner muppet go wild and get disppointed in September, just go ahead.

Heh, I don't think he'll join United.

But the sheer arrogance of you saying by surety that he won't come here is particularly rich considering you've been losing your best players consistently for the last two years or so.

Thanks, your post just proves me right  - it seems to be pointless to share information about a player whose interviews hardly make it (correctly quoted) into the English media. Therefore, it's even funnier that you find it arrogant that I share that Hummels won't leave Dortmund this summer as he ticks very, very differently than most other players.

Was Gotze also different since he was at Dortmund youth academy?

Why are there a few posters who think centre midfield is not a priority ! Ive read a few posts saying centre back is more important then a winger . Wow !! Can these people not see that centre mid is were we are pants !

Götze was never as outspoken or open about his thoughts on Dortmund as Hummels. Let´s just ignore the faith Dortmund supporters have in him because he was always consistent in his interviews and made a five year commitment to the club without a clause to back it up despite having better offers on the table at that time and look at the obvious differences between Hummels and Götze here.

Hummels is the son of a respected German journalist and was always more eloquent, intelligent and generally better at handling the press and profiling himself to the public. No way in hell would a guy like Hummels stick his neck so far out publically and position himself so boldly just to go against everything he said and leave in the Summer. He would have prepared a leave way better, because after the many things he said in interviews, including him not so subtly attacking players like Götze, who take the easier route to success, he would not only look like a liar, but also like a huge hypocrite, which would cause a gigantic blowback from the public. His whole image would be destroyed. And unlike Götze, where you could point towards his agents and young age or even someone like Rooney, who is clearly not the brightest person outside the pitch, there would be nothing excusing him.

So, no it is not arrogance but rather knowledge about the player and person Mats Hummels at least seems to be according to his presentation for his whole career. This is also why no German newspaper or magazine runs even a rumour about Hummels with any club, that is not denied in the very articles. It is simply not happening, just like Klopp as United coach would have never happened this year.

We need at least 1 class deep sitting defender, though. Which of our current CBs do you think can get us CL football?

Other than that, mid is a priority. We need at least 1 MF and the media seems to consider us in the lead for Cesc, so that's something.

Well no not really. We need two CM's at least.
In theory yes, we need two CMs but that will largely be predicated upon what formation van Gaal plans to use. I understand Carrick is getting older and the likes of fletcher and Cleverley aren't good enough but I think we will only buy one, an established box to box midfielder such as Strootman which is a necessity for van Gaal's system. If we buy another CM, it would be a young "project" type player that LvG can mold.

Lot of rumours but I doubt anyone will be coming for a while. VG will need the first month to weed out the shit and see what he needs.
All this paper talk is just to fill space at the moment. There is nothing happening.

By which time there will be two weeks left of the transfer window.

I like your thinking. There's always next summer.

You mean actual footballers? Very strange.

Why very strange Valencia has been easily better than both Kagawa and Nani in his time here. Nani is inconsistent at best and now a days injury prone and Kagawa is proving to be a square peg in a round hole.

Nah, Valencia is a terrible player. It's through our abundance of shite like him that we can't ever play decent football. The Nanis and Kagawas of the world, they are what we need.

Under a good manager Carrick can still be a good player until January at least when we do get Strootman and then it's only the matter of getting in a good central midfielder to partner Carrick until Strootman arrives! Well, I think that's what'll happen at least.

No Valencia is not terrible although his form has been poor. I remember him beasting Ashley Cole as no player has ever. Kagawa has not performed here (for many a reason) and Nani has contributed nothing for a while now. The three haven't been great but if we have to keep one it would be Valencia for me.

Yeh I would definately buy a centre half but midfield for me is the area we need to address first . Everybody seems to be doing there business pretty quick other than us which is always a worry ,after last year , but with LVG prioritising his national team commitments its understandable if not a little frustrating . I know people will post "the windows not open yet " but Costa going to chelsea says deals can be done . Like i have posted previously maybe van gaal wants a good look at what hes got before he juggles things around or maybe deals are already in place , but were waiting for the World Cup to finish before announcing . As for fabregas I'm not so sure ! I always think that players who hit the scene at 17 always peak around 25 ish so maybe his best years are behind him . Obviously someone will come on and blow my legs off but I'm thinking of rooney , owen , fat ronaldo here .

Nani was cheaper and has contributed just as much and probably more to the club than Valencia has. More goals, more assists, more big matches and a hand in more trophies. Going forward, I would probably keep all three of them, but Valencia would be the first out of the door for me.

Price was much the same between Nani and Valencia and I'm not convinced Nani has contributed more.

Do we need two centre mids? Yes

Are our wingers gash? Yes.

Do we have any real quality in central defence? No not really.

Is Evra old, slow and getting worse each year? Yes

Is Rafeal either constantly injured or picking up cards? Yes.

So yeah, what's so funny about it?

Guys, keep this to yourselves for the time being. Woodward has just stated negotiating with a local agent from a reputable chain of newspaper selling corner shops for a bumper bag of snack sized Mars Bars. Fingers crossed!

Edit: never mind, he fecked it up.

Can it adapt in a two or three man midfield?

I really hope we sign Janmaat... ok i've only seen him playing for Holland, but the lad is really really talented... i mean i love Rafael but if he keeps getting injured the whole time we should sign a RB. I hope Van Gaal at least consider signing this lad..
