Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

saw a Schweinsteiger story today!

How many Bayern players are they going to link us to in one window?

We are Not getting any first team regulars from Bayern. It seems mental to even have to write that!
Yeah the Schweni story ran two days ago when Kroos rejected us saying we said no to Bastian.

Totally agree, but it feels that even more so than normal, they are literally writing anything to fill the United column inches. Stuff like this sells papers I understand, but it's frustrating that most of it seems to have little or more often no substance to it whatsoever.

They do it because a lot of people - as seen on here, fall for it hook line and sinker and re-tweet it and/or spread the link.

Nobody knows anything most likely - yet fans are desperate to believe everything they read and criticise the club for not getting a deal done for a player we might not even be interested in.

There is plenty of time left in the summer and hopefully things are moving behind the scenes.

My post was based on the assumption Rooney will be first choice shadow striker (the role Louis termed himself of the most advanced central midfielder).

I made clear if Louis van Gaal doesn't think Mata is first choice it makes sense to sell him if we get £40m and invest that money elsewhere. For you to dispute this point is to say we shouldn't accept £40m for a player that will not be first choice. That we are better with Mata on the bench (even though Kagawa can perform that role) and not investing £40m than we are to sell Louis' second choice player to buy similar quality where it's more needed.

If Mata is first choice for Louis then it goes without saying we must keep him however Rooney might be the preference as the shadow striker and Mata isn't the wide player Louis likes.
Van Gaal has also talked about playing an attacking midfielder in that role. He's not set on it having to be a striker who plays there. You're reading into what he's said too much, whilst ignoring other things he's said to fit your point.

Gimme an M gimme a U gimme a PPE gimme a TRY it spells MUPPETRY! Hoorah!

The gossip well has run dry, it is Memorial Day in the US tomorrow, is it a holiday for ya'll? Will there be fresh gossip or just rehashed shite?

I may take tomporrow off from the caf and give it a chance to recharge.

Stop believing that the club is targeting every name the media links us to.
I don't! That's the whole point about what I was saying. I don't believe we're even in the market for that kind of player but people on here and contemplating muppet suicide if we don't sign Cesc, Kroos, Robben or Ronaldo.

I hate this place when the transfer market opens.

My point was assuming Rooney is first choice, no point having such an expensive bench option if we received a very good offer. It stands to reason my opinion would also be should Mata be first choice and Rooney sit on the bench and then chelsea offer £30m, we should sell as opposed to keep Rooney.

I'm pretty sure Mata will be first choice.

If so, assuming Rooney isn't in the first 11 we should look to sell him as we could get a fair bit for him. Louis might play him as a LW winger though but I think it would be a waste of potential cash for him to sit on the bench.

Suprised we havn't been linked to Martinez yet.Out of all the Bayern players he would suit us the best.Surely something has to give in that midfield, they can't play Thiago,Schweinsteiger, Kroos,Martinez and Lahm. They are all to good to be benched as well.Golden boy Gotze can also play the 10 role in a midfield three aswell and is struggling to get games.Surely we can get one of there players.

This thread should have its own memorial day, in remembrance of 5 days ago.

This sounds sensible, until you realise Woodward seems to think briefing the press is a clever way to run things, and this supposed "list" is likely to have a lot of the players being bandied around in the press on it, and worryingly they all seem to be saying no!

Is Woodward "briefing the press" this summer? I've seen nothing official but of I'm wrong fair enough.

It's silly season now and the press have to have something to write about until the World Cup. Hence all the shite - made worse by Twitter and Bloggers who are no more knowledgable than you or I.

Chelsea will sign Costa. They only wanted Rooney probably because they thought they could get him cheap.

Nobody else is likely to pay Rooney what he gets at United. The other top sides didn't want him last year. He'll be staying.

I can see Juan Mata being sold for around £40m should Barca want him and I do think he would do really well at Barcelona as Enrique will probably move them back towards pure tiki taka.

I can see Rooney being used as van Gaal's 'shadow striker', Kagawa will be his understudy since Mata is simply too good for that role.
I believe, from watching Van Gaal's teams in the past, that we will be moving to a system akin to tiki taka ourselves and in whatever possession system Mata trumps Rooney in the #10 role . Selling Mata to play Rooney in the hole will be shortsighted and a move we could very well regret .

I reckon LVG will find a system to fit in all 3 of RVP, Rooney and Mata. I don't think either of them will go anywhere.

Manchester United quoted £15m for Patrick Roberts. Roberts was part of the England U17 Euro winning side. Arsenal, Barcelona and Real Madrid are all monitoring the "future wonder".

Just popped up on facebook.. is he any good?

I reckon LVG will find a system to fit in all 3 of RVP, Rooney and Mata. I don't think either of them will go anywhere.

I've been racking my brains as to how this can be done and every option has fundamental problems:

1.
Rooney - RVP
Mata
The trouble with this is that they all occupy the same space. If Rooney is alongside RVP they will be vying for space and it doesn't leave Rooney the option to drop in behind RVP as Mata is using that space. Also, neither Rooney or RVP are the quickest so it would be a little stagnant up front which would see opposition sitting deep and counter attacking and despite having Mata playing in behind it would mean once again we'd be relying on our wide players to create which would have to be the fullbacks. A solution could be having someone like Koke in the 3 man CM who could add width where needed.

2.
RVP
Rooney - Mata - Player
Personally I don't think Rooney at 29 will be the ideal player to play that wide forward role he used to play. He's not as explosive as he once was and you want your wide forwards to carry the ball, not spray it to the other wing.

3. Any formation with RVP anywhere other than up front. Just a waste.

4.
RVP
Mata - Rooney - (Mata)

Mata anywhere other than central is a big waste of his talents and we need pace in wide areas as we're lacking it everywhere else.

5.
RVP
Rooney - Player

Mata
DM --- DM

The other option is dropping Mata or Rooney back into midfield, Mata would be the best option as he could really pull the strings but he'd need two defensive midfielders to pick up his slack and we'd need to sign a pacey wide forward to give us some directness up front or out wide.

There's obvious big flaws every way you try because they all have weaknesses in certain positions and all have strengths that require them to be played in their own positions.

It's what you get when you have three brilliant individuals who all need a team to be built around them and are all good enough to justify having a team built around them.

For me Januzaj can be the pacey wide forward to make some of those formations work. I think Van Gaal will find a way, he's intelligent enough. I can see us playing narrow at times, with width outside provided by wingbacks.

Give any top manager those 3 players and they'll be excited by the prospect of fitting them all in his side.

The formation that would suit us, which would fit all the players in would be a diamond, but I think it can lack width.
I really want to see Mata play behind the striker, rather than out wide because he is wasted.
Rooney causes a big problem for this, but he is also adaptable. He can play striker, he can play #10, I'd also rather see him out wide right than Mata.
So Rooney could play every match, but rotate around the field.

It's a real shame Rooney can't adapt and become positionaly good enough to play in midfield, because he has the aggression and willingness to get back, and also has a good range of passing, so could be a great box to box midfielder, I just don't think he has the natural understanding to play that role correctly

Signing Schweinseiger is impossible. It should not even be mentioned. The press are idiots for even thinking about this aloud. There has been no inkling of him even leaving Bayern in the past. None that I know off.

Can anyone imagine Scholes signing for someone like Inter Milan, fresh of our successful league campaign of 02/03? That's how ridiculous this rumour is.

It's really not. Schweinsteiger has been playing through injuries and pain barriers quite frequently, and isn't/hasn't been as integral for Pep as others have this season. Whilst I don't think it will happen, it isn't as impossible as many think.

True!!!! Its as mad as Christino Ronaldo signing for 3rd place Real Madrid after is team just lost in the Champions League to Barcelona after retaining the league title.

I get your point but non of us know Schweinsteiger like that and we all know Paul Scholes was a different type of professional.

It's been 11 years man. Surely by now you know his first name.

I'm sorry, but did you really not foresee Ronaldo us for Real eventually? Really?

About Schweinsteiger, let me put it this way, back in the early 00s, Giggs was not as universally revered by United fans as he is now. For a period of time, he was suffering from poor form and injuries, and there were talks of Juventus being interested in him. Nothing came out of that.

I'd be very surprised if we signed Schweinsteiger.

Tremendous amount of negativity surrounding our transfer window, could it be 2013 all over again.
It's gutting all these supposed world class signings turning us down.

Hmmmm... would take him over Young, that's for sure plus there's space and time for improvements with his game.

Still waiting for a bigger fish to sign.

Whats the point of this thread by the way? Isn't it the same as the twitter thread/fabregas/shaw etc threads?

I was under the impression it was just any rumours via twitter or news outlets were posted here but just those and no replies. Guess not.

Wait until we get some proper media assertions that we're in for him before creating or bumping an old thread but Diaro Sport are saying that Alexis Sanchez will be the first player out the door for Barcelona with them looking for a quick sale at 25mil

Van Gaal better get to work writing a new list then; the chances of Dortmund allowing Lewandowski, Hummels and Reus to leave in the same window, are absolutely nil.

Apparently the fabled list consists of Shaw, Strootman, Hummels and Reus according to MEN. Its a bit worrying that there arent more CMs on that list especially with Strootman injured I hope LvG is not overestimating our current midfield.

That's such lazy journalism.

Thats just a list of players we/anyone would want minus kroos and fabregas.

Cant believe people get paid for that!

No way in hell are we getting both Reus or Hummels out of Dortmund.

I have my reservations about Strootman. Won't be fit until September. Will need month or so to get fitness back. Then play in the reserves. Also then adjust to a new league. Rather let him stay at Roma for the year. We need players who'd walk into our midfield in August.
