Manchester United transfer news and rumours for summer 2014

The most frustrating thing for me is that the whole strategy is completely unknown. Usually you have the idea about transfer targets, who will go, at least waht positions our team will look to strengthen and what type of players it searches for.
With United it's all a big mystery. As much as half the squad could potentially go, our reported targets all over the place.

I'm hoping that with the Van Gaal appointment, the whole transfer plans have just been scrapped and we're starting again. No problem with that. He's going to have a system, and he'll want players that fit that system.

If none of them are superstars, that's fine by me too.

As long as the scrapped plans doesn't include Luke Shaw, I wouldn't mind that either.

So then.

Kroos is staying at Bayern
Shaw deal has stalled
Konohpylanka says he'd rather stay with Dnipro because of Champions League
Robben is staying at Bayern

We're not signing anyone again are we?

Instead of chasing "star" players this summer and playing a waiting game, we should be going after a couple of box to box midfielders who are mobile, good on the ball and will not back down from a battle in midfield. Our aim should be to provide a solid base for our attacking talents to shine, and also provide cover for our defense. Strootman would have been a great signing last year, but with his injury concern and the cost to get hold of him, i would delay that until next summer. This year, i would go with someone like Lars Bender and Morgan Schneiderlin. They can play in a 2 man midfield, or in a 3 man midfield with Kagawa or Rooney as the attacking midfielder. We aim for the title, if not we get into the Champions league and then we bring in more quality to compete in Europe. If we get someone better, Bender and Schneiderlin become squad players.

Chasing after Vidal, Fabregas and possibly Kroos is not going to end well, just like last year. If Van Gaal wants to use any of the current midfielders are starters, he will be in for a big disappointment.

Pure irony that he mentions how loads of us will waste hours reading pointless stories on transfers....just after we've spent 5mins reading his, quite pointless piece.
Hardly. You missed the point of the article.

We need to THROW THE BANK at our top targets. It's an unfortunate situation but we are desperate due to years of minimal investment relative to others.

We're not buying from a position of strength, as we could have in recent years. It's pure desperation.

Desparation is the opposite of sexy. Who wants to play for a club that oozes despair? LvG will make sure you don't throw the bank at players but make reasonable transfers.

Absolutely agree, instead of seeking the big names let's go for those players that we have a realistic chance of getting and who can at the very least improve on what we have . Next season, if we are back in the CL, we can then make moves for the bigger names .

So will "Not on the List" be this years "No real Value"

We've invested plenty - the guts of £400m since 2006. We've just invested very, very badly.

So since 2006 that is 8 years we have won 5 leagues 3 league cups and a champs league (3 finals) and we have invested very very badly? What the feck must Madrid Liverpool Chelsea and City fans think?

Last season Bayern, this season Real Madrid. That's what spending money gets you nowadays, the ability to lift that cup and next season we're not even in it.

How much money Bayern spent exactly? 30 mils for Martinez in god knows how many years is hardly "spending money". city and PSG spent much more and are yet to achieve anything worthwhile in CL. Although without money it's tough to be the best team of course.

Not always though. Barcelona this season. Atletico Madrid won La Liga.

Martinez - 40m euros
Gomez - 30m euros
Ribery - 25m euros
Robben - 25m euros
Neuer - 22m euros
Gustavo - 17m euros
Tymoschuk - 14m euros
van Buyten - 14m
Boateng -13.5m euros
Mandzukic - 13m euros
Shaqiri - 12m euros
Rafinha - 5.5m euros
Dante - 4.7m euros

Add that up and you reach 232m euros. You could argue that they've spent that amount over a period of 5-7 years.

If you take five years period i reckon there would be even as much as 10 teams outspending them. Well 6-7 at least.

So then.

We're not signing anyone again are we?

Andy Carrol. His buy out clause is 32m but we're going to bid 40 and see what happens.

Been working away last couple of days with no internet, went away expecting shaw and Kroos, now understand we aren't interested in anyone anymore!?

This. Originally we made a great team but after a few years our signings became bad and worse. Anderson, Young, Hargreaves, Berbatov and Fellaini were bad signings (not all equally bad but still). RVP and Valencia were good signings. De Gea was a great signing. Nani didn't run out that good and the same (until now) has happened to Kagawa. Jones and Smalling while can become good signing in the end, doesn't look like it now.

Our problem was that we went for bad players in the last few years. Mata cost only 3-5m higher than Young (with a significantly lower wage) for example. Dortmund made a team for less money than we signed Fellaini. etc etc

A medium sized budget spent poorly, essentially.

People tried to snigger at Real's transfer strategy yet they sell rejects often for twice the price they bought them.

DDG
Rafael Hummels Vertonghen Shaw
DM
Barkley Mata
Sanchez RVP Januzaj
I'm praying we end up like this by time transfer window shuts..

Glad you are not in charge Raees

Plus we stopped shopping at Harrods and started buying at Asda! Hernandez Young Buttner Powell Zaha Smalling Jones DDG all have/had potential and that was what we bought instead of more like Berbatov RVP etc

I can see Juan Mata being sold for around £40m should Barca want him and I do think he would do really well at Barcelona as Enrique will probably move them back towards pure tiki taka.

I can see Rooney being used as van Gaal's 'shadow striker', Kagawa will be his understudy since Mata is simply too good for that role.

If Mata is that good, why sell him when we are in need to buy quality, not flush it away?

Send me a large cheque to Attn: Wibble, RedCafe Finance Department, PO Box 419, Abuja, Nigeria and I'll see what I can do.

Yea would be absolutely stupid to sell one of our few world class players and someone who is the best player in his position at our club.

In a tiki taka system he could play RW in addition to the iniesta role however due to Louis van Gaal's system's need for wide players who actually provide width and can beat their man, he is suited only to the number 10 role.

I think Louis will prefer Rooney as the number 10, that's just my opinion. It's what he calls a shadow striker and Rooney seems to have the traits he desires therefore Mata would be second choice.

Mata is too good to be second choice, Kagawa is fine in that role therefore should Barcelona offer £40m for one of our three number 10s, we should take it and invest that money on top of what we already have in a position that's more desperately needed.

If Louis wants Mata in his first team then obviously we do not sell, I'm making assumptions Rooney will perform the shadow striker role. It is possible Louis will want all of Mata, RVP and Rooney in his first team.

I'm just saying, if Louis van Gaal does not think Mata will be first choice then it makes sense to accept a £40m bid.

My post was based on the assumption Rooney will be first choice shadow striker (the role Louis termed himself of the most advanced central midfielder).

I made clear if Louis van Gaal doesn't think Mata is first choice it makes sense to sell him if we get £40m and invest that money elsewhere. For you to dispute this point is to say we shouldn't accept £40m for a player that will not be first choice. That we are better with Mata on the bench (even though Kagawa can perform that role) and not investing £40m than we are to sell Louis' second choice player to buy similar quality where it's more needed.

If Mata is first choice for Louis then it goes without saying we must keep him however Rooney might be the preference as the shadow striker and Mata isn't the wide player Louis likes.

My opinion: we should not sell Mata under any circumstance this summer.
