Manchester United Summer Transfer Window 2015: What do we still need?

I'd say hoping for an emergence from Rojo or Jones at LCB or Blind or Carrick (not an emergence but a great old man season) at DM is better than signing a mediocre solution for too much money we have to overpay.

RB and GK (once De Gea goes) really do desperately need signings though.

shweinsteger, schneiderlin, that monaco rb, ramos/otamedi and a forward.

i miss the gundogan to utd days

As a sensible notion I'd agree but as say us becoming a serious league challenger or trophy winner I'd bet my bollocks we wouldn't win a thing.

The fact is Schneiderlin for example is available and not mediocre so too Otamendi. I would be speechless if we started season the same bar a RB and a no doubt lesser keeper.

We do we still need? We need to hurry the feck up, that's what we need.

I'd be very happy with Schweinsteiger in midfield. I must admit, I'd love a real strong, athletic, hardman in there to complete the trio with him and Herrera. Perhaps a player of African origin/descent (apologies, don't want to open up that old caf argument again!). Obviously Pogba was/is first choice, and I was also keen on Kondogbia as a more realistic target, but seems we were never interested. Imbula is on the market this summer, but I will concede I have not seen a great deal, and Carvalho seems to have been underwhelming of late.

Basically, I'd like Schweinsteiger and a player who comes, rightly or wrongly, with the 'New Vieira' tag! Obviously he needs to be able to play a bit too.

It is a little disappointing that we haven't signed anyone else yet, has to be said. Thought we'd have like 2 or 3 signings by the end of June (still might), but it's looking unlikely. Our main targets seem to be Schweinsteiger and Ramos currently, and while they'd be brilliant signings for the short term, they won't be easy deals to complete and are likely to drag on a bit if there is anything in them.

Also who the feck are we going for for the right back position?

Regarding those specific names:
I couldn't classify Otamendi as mediocre. He's coming off a season where he made the La Liga XI over Godin and Sergio Ramos.

Schneiderlin is a tougher one. He's not mediocre but he could be a Young or Fellaini-esque signing in being a solid but limited player who gives us his all but isn't quite good enough to start for a CL or title contender. He's a solid player who is well suited for tough scraps, can pass the ball and 25 isn't old for a more defensive CM but there's no guarantee he'll step up comfortably and he may cost enough that we could sign, for example, any non-Bayern Bundesliga CM (this board seems to rate Xhaka) for the money and have some left over.

Our hierarchy of needs looks like this:

1. Have to get someone in - We've got a crisis at RB and GK since Van Gaal doesn't rate Rafael and De Gea will be at Madrid. Those positions need replacements, desperately. I don't trust Valdes to deal with crosses in the Prem or stay healthy and Valencia (or Young moving there) is a good backup option but no more. If we have to reach for an imperfect

2. Really need to pull the trigger unless there's nothing out there - Then, since Van Gaal won't play Di Maria at all centrally, it seems, we could really use a CM/DM to go with Herrera and then the 3rd spot can depend on opponent, fit and the form of Mata, Carrick and Blind, who are all strong players. Fellaini, Rooney, Januzaj and Pereira are also around.

3. Look for the right signing but with urgency - LCB is similar but a bit less of a need as either Jones (23) and Rojo (25 but new to Prem) could surprise us and emerge as a starter next to Smalling. We likely need to upgrade here but if we have to wait a year there is still hope of someone having a strong season.

4. Look to sign if we have an option we like - 2nd CM/DM to go with Herrera and the CM we sign. Again, though, if we mix and match right, then between Di Maria, Mata, Carrick and Blind there's talent here.

5. Only if the right signing is there - RWF or Striker. Get some more pace in the attack. I think Rooney will score goals if he's just chucked up front as a 9 all season, so I'm not as concerned with the 9 spot as others. RVP and Chicharito will score goals off the bench too and Wilson or Henriquez can fight to be the 3rd striker. If we sign a player here it should really be someone we think has incredible upside or a replacement for the above names.

If Di Maria does go, I think RWF becomes a position of need.

If we can land Ramos, Fabinho and Schneiderlin, that would be a good summer if the only departures are Nani, de Gea and one of Van Persie or Hernandez.

First X1:

Valdes
Fabinho Smalling Ramos Shaw
Schneiderlin
Mata Herrera diMaria Young
Rooney

Second X1:

Lindegaard
Valencia Jones Rojo Blind
Carrick
Januzaz Pereira Fellaini Memphis
vanPersie

Reserve: Wilson, McNair, Blackett, Lingard, Evans
Not bad at all.

I don't think we'll get Schweinsteiger, but I think we'll get Ramos.

My prediction: Ramos, Schneiderlin and a forward. Maybe Benteke.

What we need is for our signings to be done before the start of the bloody season this time so we dont throw away silly points at the start while they bed in!

A RB is not a priority for us looking at the faith Van Gaal has shown in VaIencia. The bare minimum has to be - schneiderlin, otamendi, lloris (if de gea leaves) and a world class forward (easier said than done) ..its going to be a tough summer for Ed.

I think the only real tough task he'd have from that list would be a WC forward. Not many available around. May have to go a level below and go for Lacazette or a player of his ilk. If he carries on the way he's going, he'll be WC.

I think that, psychologically, we need a DONE DEAL today - time is getting on, pre-season is rapidly approaching and we can't afford another whole week with no activity.

Transfers still possible seem like Schweini, Schneiderlin, Ramos, Otamendi, Fabinho, Gundogan, Pogba, Sterling, Kane and Cillensen seem to be most if the links, I hope we get Gundogan, Schneiderlin, Ramos and Fabinho, I think we would only need to replace DDG if he goes and another forward depending on RvP and Hernandez

Not sure the club should be too concerned about the psychological well-being of people who spend their entire summer trawling the internet desperate for any transfer titbit they can find; I think that mental health ship may have sailed! No doubt there'll be plenty of 'activity', we just aren't privy to it.

Hopefully the CB situation with the CB position will be sorted out soon with either Ramos or Otamendi, and if we are lucky there will have been some substance in the Fabinho rumors to sort out RB.

The Schneiderlin rumours are gathering pace and he'd be a big boost to our midfield IMO. I think getting a second CM is solely down to whether Schweinsteiger comes or not as I feel Gundogan will stay at Dortmund. If so then my guess is LvG will wait until next summer to see how his boy Strootman has recovered and hopefully look at Xhaka as possible Carrick replacements.

I don't see another wide player being brought in and I'm skeptical on a striker due to Rooney being untouchable and the dwindling lack of options. We will badly need a keeper though, Lloris, Leno or Oblak would be decent shouts, Begovic at a push and then we'd just use Valdes for the CL where there wont be nearly as big of an aerial game to deal with.

How far would this team take us. Been linked with all new additions

I hope we can get Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin. That'd be superb, midfield absolutely covered.

A centre back. I think Ramos will stay at Madrid. He'd be my first choice but would still be pleased with Otamendi.

I don't think we'll sign a Right back now. I'm not sure we'd be willing to go to the price Everton would want, unless we throw in a couple of players in part exchange.

Still think we'll add a striker too.

A keeper as well if De Gea goes.

For me

GK - Lloris or Leno

RB - Darmian or Coleman

CB - Otamendi or Ramos

CM - Both Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin.

ST - If we get rid of both RVP and Hernandez then we'd need a striker. But can't really think of many good ones coming to sit on the bench.

GIGGS: UNITED LOOK TO STRENGTHEN

Ryan Giggs says Manchester United are keen to add heavyweight names to the spine of their team in a bid to regain their place at the top of English football this season.

Welshman Giggs, assistant to Louis van Gaal, agrees with the manager’s assertion that United are close to competing for the top honours again after two lean campaigns following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

United’s record appearance holder told the Sunday Times that it was vital they strengthened in the middle of the park and added star names to the squad, if possible.

He said: “If there are players available who are winners, who are proven, then, yeah, let’s go and get them. And with any good team the spine is important. Midfield, striker, centre-backs, goalkeeper. I’m sure we’ll be looking to strengthen the spine all the way through.”

Who are the serious RBs available?
Danilo, Fabino, Clyne?

Have we been seriously linked with any of them?

I really wouldn't be surprised if the situation is:

1. He is comfortable with Valencia.
2. Giggs is a fan of Rafael and Van Gaal sees him as young still and hasn't written him off just yet. He just wants him to learn how to play the game his way.
3. He thinks McNair can get minutes there to continue his apprenticeship.

All in all he probably hasn't identified a player who would be a significant upgrade and offer potential for the future worthy of the likely investment.

LvG clearly doesn't trust Di Maria in midfield.

Januzaj has stated he'll stay at United next season.

Depay has only just got here.

Mata and Young are both coming off good seasons. That's 5 wingers for 2 positions and LvG has said he likes to have a small squad with only 22 players. 1 probably has to go.

Of the 5, I think Young has the smallest upside in terms of potential but it would be incredibly harsh to get rid at the moment. This is probably the last time he'll be worth anything on the market, though. What do we reckon the manager is gonna do?

I reckon we will look like this come the end of the summer spree:

Coleman - Ramos - Smalling - Shaw

Schweinsteiger - Schniederlin - Herrera

Mata/Depay - Rooney - Di Maria

Looks strong. Still feel that a Bale type would really add a lot but there seem few available.

If there is any truth in the Turan story then I could see Young, or much to the Caf's anger, Mata being sold, LvG did say it would be a difficult summer for some players and that there might be choices made that fans wouldn't expect.

Just been thinking if he did say this, is there anyone really whose indispensable to us apart from Dave, whose ironically leaving us.

Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Ramos, Depay, I would be more than happy.

On our reported interest I'd prefer:

RB: Coleman
CB: Ramos
DM: Schniederlin
CM: Gundogan
FW: Lacazette/Kane/Benteke

Keep De Gea for one more year instead of underselling, keep Di Maria and if the FW signing isn't possible keep RVP. I'd only be interested in signing Schweinsteiger if Gundogan definitely isn't available. Sign a player from each section above and we'd be a serious squad who would only need to strengthen a little each summer after. On De Gea, I'm of the opinion that we should keep him and keep our eye on the likes of Oblak and Leno for another year and take the hit on the small transfer fee Madrid are offering us.

Carrick and Herrera, although obviously the former isn't going anywhere at 34.

If Herrera goes I think we draw lots and the loser self-immolates in protest in front of Old Trafford.

Or at least a strongly worded letter.
