Manchester United Sign Anthony Martial!

Isn't the Martial fee (without add-ons at least) less than how much Mangala went to City for?
No, it isn't. Martial deal is 50M, although only 30M upfront, 20M over 4 years, plus 30M in potential add-ons. Mangala was 40M.

I was sure it was reported somewhere that it was worked out that Mangala actually cost close to £42M rather than the 40M Euros intitially reported

A lot of unnecessary chatter on his price! Should be talking about how good he is, what he offers and where he's gonna play stuff like that

Well the figures I posted are the correct ones. The Guardian had to correct figures they published online, after previously saying he only cost £32m.

EDIT: Look at the footer on this article.
Ah, yeah, I remember that, because they had to pay out other stakeholders or something. Looking at that deal our business for Martial doesn't seem that ridiculous anymore, true.

I've only ever seen him in the two Valencia CL qualification legs this year. He was clearly the most talented player on the pitch, anyone saying he's not a bit special is just trying to find a stick to beat us with (for a change). But we obviously can't be expecting him to produce consistently in his first season.

Some people think he won't even play this season? :wenger:

If you're not sure what this lad is about, please watch this video. I did, and instantly felt a lot better...

The kid looks quality.

Wow, he really is the new Henry, isn't he? Love the way he glides with the ball. Makes it look so easy.

A lot of people want him to play up top, but I think with his pace and directness, we need to put him on the right wing, which would hopefully free up more room for Rooney, as we'd have Martial and Depay running in behind and stretching teams.

Just imagine those two running down the channels, switching up and causing fullbacks and CBs all kind of havoc! Can't wait to see this kid come off the bench against Livershit.

Exactly! Although no fault of his own, you just don't get that when Mata's played down the right.

I even think when Young come on the other day against Swansea, we saw a difference straight away, as he kept the width and we were able to get into some good areas in the wide areas.

Not sure was this posted already, have only checked this page.

A break down of his fee for SportsJoe.ie

------------------------------------------------------
The fee for Anthony Martial could rise to £58m (€78.7m) if he goes on to become one of the world's best players.
The French striker secured his deadline day move from Monaco, on Tuesday, and United will pay £22m up front.

The Premier League club will then pay £3.5m over the next four years - adding up to £36m (€48.8m).

However, according to French broadcaster RMC, an additional €30m of add-ons could make the 19-year-old United's second most expensive signing of all time [Angel Di Maria cost £59.7m].

Monaco could bank another €5m each time Martial finishes the Premier League as top scorer - to a maximum of €15m.

There is another potential €10m if Martial wins the Balon D'or while he is with United.

More realistically - for now - Martial's former club will get €5m extra if the striker wins the Golden Boy. That award is given to the best player in Europe under 21 and decided by a host of top European football journalists.

Previous winners of the award while at United - Wayne Rooney in 2003 and Anderson in 2008.
-----------------------------------------------------

£22m sounds much better.

Also with all those addons Monaco must really rate this guy.

@GlastonSpur

For future reference, if you and your calculations might go amiss.

I think people should stop defending the new signings fee! It is a fecking expensive signing for an unknown with just potential and little experience in top flight football nor scoring experience.

It's like paying a Lamborghini price for a concept car and start raving about it without even test driving it yet. You've only watched what this concept car did on telly!

Not defending it, just saying it's not entirely ridiculous in this market.

I have to say, I strongly disagree with this. As much as I think we really need a pacy right winger, and was desperate for us to get one (hi Pedro), I don't want to see us play this kid out of position just to benefit the team. If Van Gaal wanted a new winger, he should have bought one (hi Pedro).

I just think playing a young kid out of position really doesn't do them any favours in the long term. Just look at Smalling, Jones, Welbeck...even Rooney to an extent...it might have been of benefit to the team at the time, but I don't think it did them any favours in the long term, if anything it stifled, or at least slowed down their development imo.

From what I understand about Marcial, he's played on the left wing, and up front, with Monaco moving him (or at least they had planned to before we bought him) to be their main striker this season. Also if we want this kid to be our next big striker (and giving him the #9 would suggest we do) then thats where he should play, as much as possible. He's not going to become a great striker playing out on the wing. He needs to develop and hone his skills up front, learn when to make the best runs, how to hold off defenders, develop a ruthlessness in front of goal etc etc The best strikers in the world (Aguero, Benzema, Lebondowski etc etc) didn't become the great strikers that they are, by playing out on the wing.

If we've bought this kid to be a striker, we should play him as a striker.

WOAT deal, but I hope he becomes the next Messi to marginally justify it.

This 100%. His pace can be used as a striker, dont know why he should play on the right. He ofefrs movement and runs down the channels too. I mean he is the complete package. He played up top for Monaco this season too, as he should for us. He is a striker.

Yep, and I for one can not contribute because I haven't got a clue who he is or what he can do. I will wait and see and hope it is not another Zaha/Bellion/Obertan/bebe.

Just watched the Valencia compilations. Exciting but I can't shake off the Welbeck similarities. Never looks like he's fully in control of his legs

Good post and I agree, but where would you have him in a front three?

Obviously I have seen pretty much nothing of him, but based on what I have seen he looks very very raw.

He looks light years away from leading the line at a top European side. Prepare to be frustrated.

Won't pretend I knew much about him before a few days ago but since then, I'm seeing an exciting prospect never mind the cost. He has some great traits beyond the physical gifts. Seems to have good conviction, i.e. he makes a decision and goes with it rather than dawdling or getting caught in two minds. He's got natural technique and a good touch which will improve over time. I get the Welbeck comparisons but I also see a more assured goal-threat at 19 than Welbeck will probably ever be. And like many, I felt Welbeck could be a monster if he could finish decently so if that's what we get from Martial, great.

If he goes straight into the first team ala Memphis, then up top.

Either move Rooney back or drop him (preferable option but unlikely)

You could play a compilation from any game of Januzaj from Moyes' season and he would look just as good. Having said that I hope he settles quickly and has a storming season.

I see the Welbeck comparisons, but that is not a bad thing if this lad can finish. Welbeck would be one of the best strikers in the world if he could finish (I appreciate the irony in this sentence).

Welbeck lacks strikers instinct in terms of movement along with finishing.

But yeah, if he has those things along with other Welbeck attributes then he might be pretty good.

One of the biggest differences I see is that he doesn't slip over every time someone comes close to him. He looks like he has good balance
