Manchester United 0:1 Atletico Madrid (Sat 30th July, 12:45 UK time)

Awful performance against a team who are several weeks behind us. Really worrying

This will be my worry against teams with quality up top and at the back, we don’t look much of a threat against a strong team. If Ronaldo goes, I see us offering very little threat as we have no one you’d think will get that one goal from just one chance or make something out of nothing.

Hopefully we rectify that in the remainder of window. Our two toughest games we don’t win one. Yes only pre season but let’s see how we get on in the next few weeks.

We have done enough to score today so I dont know what you are saying here.

Not good enough against a team well behind us in pre season. Worrying really. We're far too short in attack.

It's not Atleti's fault really. Simeone's football and constant fouling/diving tactics are insufferable.
I agree

there was one moment in 2014 CL semi- or full final, where Gabi tackled someone and made it look like a dive like a dirty fecking fox, where I almost respected how well he did that though :nervous: I still feel conflicted by how much I admired that moment at the time, because feck that cheating shit.

Their hard working defense and their occasional beautiful play and quick thinking is enough to work on imo and I hope the pure playing time comes soon and will help fight such antics at least a little.

But if you watch plenty games, even Simeone's beautiful really does have some beauty in it, it's just that the guy likes security too much, so when they have a run of beauty for, say, three-four games and then the fifth is tough, he'll revert to the Atleti kick-and-rush variant, which sucks :o so I get the hate, but also think Atleti doesn't get the recognition it deserves (although with the beauty tending to be few and far between I guess that's understandable too)

I'm convinced he's going to end up our best signing this window, including FDJ when he signs.
I think so too. His lack of defensive movement might show him up a bit but he's got everything else in his arsenal. Plus he's part of Team Bald Patch so he gets my vote.

This game just highlights that we have no quality depth in our squad.

Think this result was needed. Folks were getting carried away with their expectations.
Well brought back into the job ahead for ETH.

Still got a way to go, but we will get there.

Good session for the boys, most will have enough minutes in their legs for the first game.

We would have probably won that if that useless f*ck of a captain could hit the target from inches out. Ah well, more players are clearly needed in the transfer window but we already know that.

Cause moaning is now frowned upon here, i'll say we played well, if we don't get anyone else in, I can see us getting 6th/7th, I'm excited

I‘ve watched ours and Arsenals game on 2 screens next to each other. The difference in pace and creativity is enormous, so much ahead of us.

Atleast we won’t be starting the campaign with McFred midfield partnership. See you in September Fred.

Cue the over reactions from a game that showed we have vastly improved and where De Gea was for the majority of the match a spectator.

Yeah because dominating Atletico Madrid for 85 minutes and ending up losing 1-0 is the same as playing against Brighton. Play how we did today against Brighton and we will get all 3 points.
We hardly dominated. Brighton will be a lot fitter than Atletico and it's not unlike them to get a result against us. Have to be more clinical but also clear we're a couple of signings short.

Joan Felix will be welcome at OT, really a top class player. Better than any left winger that we have. He would cost more than 100 million pound unless he doesn't sign a new contract.

Not atrocious, just invisible. Invariably when he is on the ball he is nice and tidy, if limited, but if he isn't making runs into the box and scoring goals what does he really bring?

He is a passenger in almost every game I have seen him play. If he keeps playing, players will think he's ETH's pet.

This game has got me worried for the new season. What was that midfield setup when Eriksen and Van de Beek came on?

Scapegoating is real.

Before the shithouses on here start moaning, important to remember we played with largely the same team while Atleti had a fresh batch after 55’. Our energy dropped and they were flying with fresh players. Considering all that, that was a good performance early in our development as a team against a bunker team.
