Manchester United 0:1 Atletico Madrid (Sat 30th July, 12:45 UK time)

You disagree that losing in our last friendly isn't ideal?
I disagree with the notion that losing this game means disaster for us especially after watching how the game went.

We played better than AM and should have been up. There is also the fact that we were missing a key player in attack who would have made better of opportunities presented to him instead of Elanga.

This isn't some sort of bad signs. Atletico scored from their only decent chance while we squandered ours. Pre season is about how we play, not results necessarily.

Overreactions coming in 3-2-1...
Already locked and loaded before your post. Feck AM just a dirty as feck team. United are short up front and in midfield. Saw plenty of good play in the game, it's encouraging, but we really need a signing or 3.

Decent game....decent preseason. Think we all now should know a solid partner for Fred is needed then we could be optimistic for a reasonable season.

It's obvious that Fred pulled his leg back as it landed on Morata and didn't put any pressure down on him. I know they're dissimilar but the ref would've considered it an accident had it been the other way around.

That being said, if we're disregarding that the first yellow was a joke, the amount of fouls Fred made since getting on a yellow should've seen him sent off for the foul regardless of the stamp.
Exactly its dissimilar.

What Fred did was mindless at the end, he never needed to make that suicidal jump.

Good run out, we worked hard to chase the ball, was unlucky to not convert some of the chances we made, for some of the players this was the first 90 mins of the season and some did look tired at the end. I am happy with that run out and ready for the season.

Fred leaves the runner for the one Dalot played all onside...but its ok its fred. Makes a few passes he's expected to make and he's playing well because he's Fred. Ok he might be likeable to many but Come on anyone can see he's seriously weak ffs. Sick of him
He was MOTM today and i think he will be a key player the coming season.

Couldn't care less about the result.

We generally looked decent and combative. But the need to add more quality, particularly in attack, was apparent.
Yeah. We played like a top team with sharp passings and movements.

Kinda worry about the attack though.

I think we definitely need a striker as we are seeing the same things creeping in again. Brunos wild passes and Rashford and Martial needing umpteen chances to score. This started in the 2nd half against Villa. I hope when the whole squad is combined that this can be eradicated. Benny McCarthy is coming to show them how to do it.
Overall we didnt play too bad, except at the important end.

Never said it was a disaster, just it wasn't ideal  I know it's preseason still but you'd rather not be losing a week before the season starts.

Might have missed amongst the mayhem, but is Fred now banned for the Brighton game?

Perfect pre season runout. Most of the team had 90 minutes in a very competitive fixture. These are simply about getting the team ready for matchday 1.

Easy to see how important Sancho is to our team today. He makes the rest of the attack tick.

Joao Felix is pure class

If you can't beat a team lagging behind in preseason by 2 weeks, it is awful. Think about what it will be like against any solid opponent among our first 10 matches, fully prepared.

In any case, we have not been up to the job in 2 consecutive preseason games. It is really concerning.
Atletico are a top team and we looked like we were about to beat them until they brought on a lot of new players and obviously looked fresher than us

Can’t complain really… we deserved a goal or 2. Eriksen looked good, if only Maguire knew how to head a ball properly he’d of got an assist. Some great pressing today, Fred was one of the best players despite getting sent of, Malacia looks good and has good forward passing. Things are looking promising.. defo need to improve the attack though, the difference in quality is massive when sancho isn’t playing. Where was he by the way?

Before the shithouses on here start moaning, important to remember we played with largely the same team while Atleti had a fresh batch after 55’. Our energy dropped and they were flying with fresh players. Considering all that, that was a good performance early in our development as a team against a bunker team.

It was also a strong batch they brought on; Witsel, Morata, Griezman, Felix...

If anything, the only worry it's given me us how light it's shown our squad to be beyond the first XI.

Decent performance, we had our opportunities to score but fluffed our lines and then Atleti did well to capitalise on our mistake late on when the legs were weary.

You can see the holes in the squad that we really need to strengthen both in terms of the first 11 and as depth but it might take a few more windows to really get the right ones in, dunno if we're going to look at bringing in some second choice options or just go with what we've got but a few injuries could see quite the drop off at the moment, as the Sancho situation has shown in this match.

Yeah I liked what I saw there. Small data set but definitely can be of some use.

They both got a couple of games ban, but both were allowed to play the opening game. Rooney got a brace against Fulham (Ronaldo the other two if memory serves)

They played the first game of the season but missed 3 games after. We won the games but still it was ridiculous. We never played the Amsterdam tournament again after that.

Sancho was a big miss today. Been our best player in pre season.

De Gea had feck all to do apart from pick the ball out.

Really good workout for the lads against a horrible team.

We'll smash Brighton next week

Some positives from that but the main take away is that this squad is woefully short in CM and attack. The lack of depth is beyond a joke. Elanga seems like a good kid but he isn’t a serious option at this level. Leaves us with 4 senior attacking players. Long season ahead unless we do some serious business before the end of the window. Squad is weaker than last season so we can’t be surprised if the results are quite similar.

Exactly. It was a better team.
As for squad… we are very, very light. It will be a few windows before we can truly challenge again.

Can't really complain, came through a tough game against scummy opposition. It's about fitness at the end of the day.
What I don't understand is why AM are allowed to behave in such a a way and face no repercussions for it.
Like, "oh it's AM, you can expect to have the shit kicked out of you by a pack of scumfecks and probably come away from it with more cards and less players"
How is it somehow acceptable?
Every 50/50 goes their way, they play to fall over and don't try and hide it. Surely refs should know that.

Decent game from us, could have won it on another day. Pretty sure we led the stats. Fred didn't mean to stomp him, he was head in hands the second he saw what happened. Felix goal was amazing quality. We're competing against some of the best in Europe and that's what we want.

Worried about Fred's red card perhaps impacting competitive games more than anything. Still agree we need another RW and another FW if Ronaldo leaves.

Think Ronaldo would have scored most of those chances we got but also think we play better without him.

Lots to take from the game and more positives than negatives in my opinion.

It was a good workout for a preseason , disappointed to concede the goal , Felix looked class for them when he came on.

It was a decent performance , we should have been one or two up by the time they scored. Ericsson looked good when he came on , ability wise he looks a step up on anything else we have. VDB invisible again for most of the time he was on , would not be shocked to see him loaned out again by the end of the month especially if we get more reinforcements in midfield.

Nice bits of play
Main worries still exist and that’s player quality
Martial and rashford are not good enough to play as a main striker or don’t know how to.
Dalot is still poor
Elenga is still average
McFred is still average.
Eriksen and malacia looked decent

If only slabhead showed the same determination to score that header as he did chasing down the referee after the Fred card. To be fair, he actually showed good movement and positional sense as he tackled the ref.

What's the Atleti financial situation, any chance we can bid £100m for Felix. He is absolutely sensational, higher ceiling and better player than Greenwood, and a proper replacement. If we can get rid of Ronaldo and FDJ stays at Barca, we should go all in for this guy, he is easily worth £100-120m

Agree, really happy with that performance. I am expecting a lot of doom mongering from resident moaners because of result though.
They've been starved lately so they'll use this result to pounce.

Looking beyond the result, we played well and we're the better team which is all that matter in pre season given results have no weight.

Completely agree. The system is exactly what we need, but we now need better quality in a fair few places to take it up levels.

If we get nobody else then 4th is likely a stretch goal that we will not be favourites for, but with luck with injuries, we may surprise a few.

We were good for the most part I thought. Not sure what people were watching.

Why have we never tried to go after Llorente?
