Manager draft

Hell of a player.

Yeah. With CR gone, the only overlaps would me Becks and one more, I presume!

At least one who is pretty good - yes. But he could easily end up not being picked by either manager, poor bastard.

Oh, and there's another one too - damn. Might be a bit more tempting for one manager than the other, that one.

Any excuse to post this:

Amazing!

Though I agree with the idea in theory, 50 games usually mean more than 1 season and that would not be favourable to manangers who had one season, but a successful one at that. should be more optimal.

This was highlighted before. In Ronaldo/Lippi arguement. Assuming MJJ picked Ronaldo, compared to career Peak level, he was near the top. But compared to Peak under manager (which is the criteria), he was injured and had a overall terrible season playing only 7 matches. Had the criteria been 25 matches, it would be more easy to judge what his level should have been.

Too late to change now, but I think it is good to note for future.

so what does happen if I pick Ronaldo?,we consider his form at the time (barca, afterwards)

I'm going to sleep now and haven't really thought about my picks. So skip me. I'll pick tomorrow morning.

Well, you can't actually pick him - he's gone now. But IF you had picked him, the question for me personally would've been whether he was an obviously poor fit/had a crap spell/underperformed under Lippi's management.

And the answer would be no - the main problem was that he was out injured for months on end.

Unlike - to use two obvious examples - Veron under Fergie (clearly not a good fit, was undoubtedly sub par compared to his prime level) and Larry White under the same manager (was clearly over the hill).

That's my take on it, though. It's clearly possible to interpret "prime under manager X" differently. An injured player ain't in prime condition, literally speaking, that's hard to deny.

Will PM my pick(s) before I log off if need be, any takers?

I'll continue from last draft by picking The Czech cannon...

@Annahnomoss in case you have Dan's pick.

Why not just get an obvious pick out of the way...

Heh - yeah, that's what I thought too. About half of 'em are dead certs - and can't be picked by anyone else.

In my opinion managers should submit their un-contestables rather than forfeit their pick, so to speak - it's just more...orderly that way. Not that it matters greatly - just my tuppence.

Initially, I thought so too, but I think there is a small advantage is not doing it. When he comes back and sees that some of his overlaps have not been picked, he can choose them immediately. If he picks some uncontestables now, then he has to wait next turn to get the opportunity back again.

I don't know why you mentioned World Cup though. Nobody is questioning his quality, yet he didn't play in knock-out stage (due to injury, of course) and this is hardly his greatest achievement as a player.

Still, Ronaldo-Nesta

True enough - but strictly speaking there shouldn't be any advantages to not following the given order n' flow of the thing.

I contemplated Stam but LVG's record with Holland in the early 2000's was questionable

Certainly was. But LVG didn't manage Stam on club level - so you couldn't have picked him anyway until the reinforcement round, and it was a long shot that he'd last.

The Ancelotti boys could have picked him too.

Going by the rules of this draft Ron Vlaar would be a much better pick anyway, seeing as he was a defensive rock inder LVG at the world cup

Very dicey, as he would be pitted up against some of all time greats. Definitely questions would be raised. His defensive partner should be a GOAT for it to pass draft scrutiny imo!

He already faced Messi in his prime ;) dont worry, ive done this a long time to realise what kind of team gets votes

Cafu started his career great in Sao Paolo, winning back to back Copa libertadores and being named the South American Player of the year, after having finished 3rd the year before in '94. By then he had already been playing with the Brazilian National team for four years and decided to go for a move to Europe, he went to Zaragoza - quickly decided it wasn't the right move for him and went back to Brazil where Vanderlei Luxemburgo managed him for Palmeiras.

Cafu was when he left Palmeiras 27 years old and was the next year part of the brilliant '98 Brazil side. Did you remember him going to Roma so late, he really is a time bender.

As Crappy can't interfere I'll post my next pick.

Let's take a step back in time, but remain in the same area. The date is 1992 and Roberto Carlos gets called up in to the Brazilian national team as a 19 year old. What is spectacular is not the age, it is the fact that he was playing for Uniao Sao Joao, who weren't a very highly ranked side. His success also saw Palmeiras invest in him where Vanderlei Luxemburgo was in charge. Two years of a success story and he was off his ways to Inter Milan, where he had a poor patch due to Roy Hodgson wanting him to play as a winger.

He had a discussion with Roy and they both decided the best thing was to go separate ways, Carlos to Real Madrid to make his name as one of the best full backs in history. Vanderlei has of course also managed Roberto Carlos, as the Brazil manager in 98-00 and for Real Madrid.
