Nice try Ed. Had me till "mixes affability with ruthlessness"
Yeah, he's a hard man alright...

I really hope the club aren't doing that most pathetic of things: sending messages to the manager via the press.

Another briefing?

Yep. Sounds typically Ed. "Look Ma, I am tough".

And also implies that Jose is starting Bailly-Lindelof because Woodward accused him of not utilizing the 2 CBs he already bought. Not really good if the manager is picking players for the starting XI out of compulsion.

Or spite. Or to make a point.

Both of which are self-defeating approaches.

Think Ed knows he'll look silly to his bosses if he sacks Jose after extending his contract. That contract extension maybe added tens of millions to what Jose's compensation/renumeration would have been if he were to terminate it early. With some reporting Jose's new contract goes as high as 20m a year Ed could be losing the club a lot of money with that call and I'm sure he knows it

The Essex boy done good, and when within the next three months Jose throws his toys out of his pram and goes crying back to London he may get the credit he deserves....
Jose will not be crying. Have you seen the payoff he'll get?

Amusing/sad to see some of our fans try and come up with logic to justify this shambles so they can ensure criticism falls only in Jose.

I mean there's loads of bullshit and not just in this thread which if people spent two seconds to think they'd realise it must be bollocks. Jose did not only want Willian and Toby/Maguire that should be obvious to anyone. Do you actually think that's likely?

Also the idea that because Jose bigged up Young we couldn't possibly want a LB is just bullshit. Managers do that all the time then get a replacement/competition in.

Is that the new "no value in the market" ? We're playing with a 30 years old AMF in rignt winger, not sure spending whatefer it takes to bring a right winger even if he's Willian to cover this position wouldn't have been better than puttig this money into their pocket. If they felt he doesn't deserve to spend on, they could have went and asked Mourinho for other targets on the right.

What they did was they refused to spend anything, on Willian or CB and kept the money in their bank account. Unacceptable from any fan whoever the manager is.

Next season we will have loads of players with their contracts running out and we'll be in a big problem after this ridiculous summer.

We spent big money on that right winger when he was 25. I think the issue is here his replacement cost more and is the same age. That does not go with the clubs strategy. If you can’t grasp that there’s not point you trying to figure out where this went wrong.

The issue is they knew what they was getting with Mourinho they originally decided to back him if they wasn’t happy with his end result last season and when they get there new players list. They should have got rid of him and brought a manager who would be happy to get a Pulisic.

This guy should be mercilessly taunted every time he shows his smug face at old Trafford. Might trigger some sort of action. Judging by his latest dictated guardian article his ego might not take it

I agree in principle but I would never jeer our manager no matter how bad things get.

Just sack Mourinho and be done with it already, Woody is going nowhere no matter the number of planes with banners that are flown around, the glazers are not going to fire him. All this is doing is making the atmosphere chaotic, and making us look like a joke. The third season Jose circus has well and truly arrived.

I hate both of these idiots.

I'm glad some of the pressure and attention is focusing on that useless fecker Woodward.

He's been getting away with it for years.

Thought at the time of the briefings after deadline day that Ed pushed a lot of unhappy fans focus from Mourinho onto himself and the owners. And since then it seems to be snowballing.

He's brought all this on himself & basically derailed the whole season because he stupidly gave Mourinho a contract extension 8 months ago, then a few months later decided not to back that man, which has led to all this mess.

Just a comedy of errors from Ed.

Hired moyes and made a horror show of the window. (Yes he hired moyes, he can't claim credit for good and plead group effort when bad. He was the boss)

Hired van gaal. Had haphazard approach to back v sack. Then did the latter in an incredibly ungracious way.

Oversaw two years of nonsensical transfer strategy. Signing a mixed bag of young players, world stars and over the hill players on crazy salaries. There was no clarity at all.

Gave mourinho mammoth mid season contract only to pull rank when it came to backing him.

Happy to whore united to everybody who is paying and have a more public appearance than id want from a director.

Generally has done an atrocious job at football for 5 years.

Getting away with murder

Woody has been nothing short of a disaster in transfer dealings, he has struggled to get in players for Moyes, LVG and now Jose so it would be best if we hired a DoF and he could just concentrate on the commercial side.

If ed is behind this latest story questioning Jose's mental health, then we really have reached a new low.

Even if you believe the story you don't raise that in public. Sick of Woodward!
Is it only in the Guardian? If it is only from one source then its probably bullshit.

This club is weird and it's not just Woodward. Just take the first DOF/DOFO briefs, they came from the club but it made no sense and they gave enough details to allow people to actually see that it was nonsensical. If you don't remember they briefed that the club wanted to modernize its structure by adding someone that would basically have no determining influence. Now they are briefing that they want someone that will have a determining influence, they brief everything and its opposite in a very blatant way.

?

He clearly said in one of his pressers he wanted 2 but is expecting 1 to come, assuming this 1 to be a CB which we failed to land what would have been the second one then ?

Again, there's no problem not paying 75m for a player if you're willing to save this money to spend it on someone else. What we did is we refused to spend on either Willian or a CB to put this money into Glazers bank account, how can any fan appreciate that ? It's not like we benefited from this money we had "saved".

Proof ?

This is another thing. We now have a situation where a Utd director is grabbing more headlines than our players. It just reflects very badly on the club.

He's constantly leaking stuff and giving off the record interviews to journalists.

It's so fecking blatant.

The guy should be nowhere near Utd on the football side, he's clueless.

Hired moyes and made a horror show of the window. (Yes he hired moyes, he can't claim credit for good and plead group effort when bad. He was the boss)

So under Woodward we won 1 PL title, only CL left to win under his leadership then.

It certainly is weird and messy. Woodward ain't the only problem, I agree. But as it says in that Jakcson article, "As the Glazers’ man-across-the-Atlantic he answers solely to the US-based owners, so commands full control of day-to-day affairs. This means the buck stops with him – a responsibility that holds no fear for Woodward"

He needs to take a large chunk of the blame from fans. Which now seems to be be what's happening. Mainly thanks to his own briefings to the media, it seems.

Didn't Moyes complain that he wasn't able to get the players he wanted, we now Mourinho saying the same thing.

Under Moyes our targets were Fellaini, Baines, Fabregas, Bale and maybe a CB, if I'm not mistaken. Two of these players had absolutely no intention of joining us.

The red tops are talking about us again, also saying fans have paid for a banner to be flow over Turf Moor at the Burnley game asking for Woodwood to be out? Is this true? Is Jose actually the one paying?

There were also reports on how Moyes didn't make decision quickly to sign players.

Van Gaal also said he didn't want Di Maria after getting sacked but before Di Maria was signed, he said he wanted wingers like Di Maria to play 4-3-3.

Everyone wants to run away from taking responsibilities for their failures.

In theory a DOF makes a huge difference by working on two things, create a coherent and balanced squad, bring a manager that fits the squad.
Well it only makes a difference if manager is changed as well. Jose is not a happy bunny, just sack him and move on with a dof and and a coach who can get best out of what we got?

Exactly, my understanding is that the managers are totally responsible for transfer targets and coaching, iirc both Moyes and LVG were gushing about the fact that they were given power at United, their tunes changed after being sacked.
Woodward is responsible for everything else and we can all agree that apart from the commercial side of things, he has made an absolute mess of everything, in particular in terms of communication. The club seem to have no direction, no philosophy, no particular goals other than increase turnovers.

On that last point, people tend to make the wrong assumption when they think that the owners won't care about winning because we are currently leaving a lot of money on the table regarding UEFA prize and TV money, I wouldn't be surprised if all the recent problems come from it, when you bring someone like Varane you bring a CL last round type of player, it means money and his age makes it a durable investment. It's only worth spending if you believe that you are going to be a perennial CL semi-finalist/finalist otherwise you just waste money that you aren't going to get back.
