Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

This makes more sense now - “I think football is changing and probably football managers should be called head coaches. I think we are more the head coach than the manager, that's the way it's going."

About time. I know we like to laugh at Arsenal (and with justification) but since they've appointed Mislintat and Sanllehi you've seen a real difference in their transfer policy. It's about time we followed suit. Woodward is a world class corporate CEO and we need to get an equally adept footballing brain next to him to sort out the transfers.

That'd still be fine with me, although I suspect that isn't the case. If his words were the decisive factor then it's the opposite outcome to the one he was after. Again, fine with me. The less control he has the better. Hopefully he'll walk.

Oh look, another one

I don't really buy this. We were linked with appointing one a few years back but Mourinho was apparently against it so we didn't. I can see us appointing one when we do eventually look for a new manager, but not any time soon otherwise we would have got Monchi or appointed Ribalta as one when they were available and we were changing things behind the scenes with scouts etc.

The move will allow United a continuity of football style and ethos as well as a more streamlined transfer policy.
Bit of a problem with the continuity of football style and ethos is that Mourinho's style clashes with "the United way", so would it be that after Mourinho we would continue to appoint managers with a similar style of play to him or is it going to be the case that we'll go back to a more traditional style and then continue it on from there? Similar question with players.

Aren't they refurbishing The Cliff for the women's team?
Yep.

I wonder how long this media warfare between the board and the manager head coach will last.

Probably Ed changed his mind. This entire window has been weird with us seemingly changing some of the policies like now not wanting to sign old players, and being a bit financially more responsible, in addition to overruling the manager in transfer window. Probably Ed gave 2 years to Mourinho, wasn't satisfied with the results, saw Mourinho not changing the way how he was dealing, and so decided to change things.

The only weird things are why we didn't do this on April, and why do we have to wait for the facilities to finish before we appoint a DoF. Also, it doesn't make much sense to wait until Mourinho leaves/is sacked to get a DoF, considering that DoF should be the one who identifies the next manager (or at least makes a list of potential choices).

Is this a real position or a puppet figure? They won't tell but I'm sure we'll be able to guess from the person that is hired and who retains what functions.

What does this paragraph tell us?

"Woodward is still expected to have a key role in recruitment following the appointment of a director of football, with Mourinho and his successors still substantially involved in player recruitment."

Ooh a Director of Footballer!! Cool.

Now all our transfer muppets' problems are over.

The idea is great but does the negotiation with Levy would have been different with a DOF instead of Ed for Toby, I don't think so...
And if it's to have a fight for power like Mourinho had with Valdano at Madrid.
If the Gaffer is fine with the person appoint by the club, then fine.

Really really bad timing for this. If this was a well thought decission then the obvious moment for this would have been immediatly after the end of the season, in order for the new director to reshape the squad working together with the manager. Now, it just looks like another jab in the power struggle between the board and Mourinho, maybe even a coup on him.

The quote about Woodward still being heavily involved, makes me think it isn't the DOF type that many of us want.

Still, a man can hope.

Even if it's a real position, Woodward will still need to sign off on the money spent.

A big part of the DoF's role is to identify manager candidates.

Very good news. Now Ed just needs to appoint a good one please.

United are discussing the expansion of their training complex in Carrington because the recently formed women’s team requires facilities and extra personnel. Once these changes are executed it is expected the director of football will be appointed.

What does one thing have to do with the other? The sooner you appoint someone the better prepared the club is for January and beyond. Are they worried they don't have an empty office without expanding Carrington?
Exactly, it sounds like a briefing to appease the fans after being rightfully called out for the absurdity of having non-footballing board members making transfer decisions. I can't see one being hired within the next year then.

Probably a puppet, though only time will tell.

That's what I am thinking.
I mean anybody who knows anything about football knows that our CEO does not know more about football than Jose.

Considering Ribalta just became DoF at another club, this seems stupid now, it should of been him.

Better be someone good.

Mister Eduardo Woodwardio

Well, during this transfer window, Woodward was essentially the Director of Football and it was one of the most disastrous transfer windows we've had.
I can't help but feel that the DoF will be Woodward's puppet. Woodward will have his hand so far up his a$$ that we'll be able to see Woodward's fingers in the DoF's mouth.

Never believed a DOF was this almighty solution anyway but if he helps us get more creative with our transfers then that's a step forward. Between Jose's desire for experience and the club's desire for marketability we seem to go for a lot of videogame targets. A DoF would also avoid the current predicament of hiring a manager whose vision is different from the board's. Note how the article made reference to Mourinho's successors

Currently the DoF office is out in the middle of a dirt field so hence they have to wait

The idea of DoF, probably wasn't on the horizon, when Ribalta left a month ago.
I think it's a knee-jerk reaction. Woodward completely ballsed up the transfer window which just ended and the club are trying to do some damage control.

This club is in need of someone with more experience in the DoF role than Ribalta. His old boss Paratici would do nicely...maybe Zidane can take over for him at Juve.
