Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

You knew it was a complete farce as soon as the DOF was not appointed before the manager. If there's going to be a Woodward like figure making final calls on the footballing decisions, there won't be any change from the 6th-8th table course that the club are on. You need a structure that will actually permit a DOF and manager to go and replace players they've already brought in. Some players don't pan out. Karius to Allsson. Bravo to Ederson.

So, this thread is more than a year old.

Has there actually been any official announcement that this is happening? Or are the press making things up.

But you stated that he'll be off somewhere else. If that's the case, then feck it, there'll be others.

PS: don't dream Palace will sell him to us for under 30mill
No I was saying Meunier for 30 or under would be good. AWB would cost closer to 50.

And of course he will go somewhere else eventually. Hardly going to stay around palace for long now is he.

Someone on /reddevils is so sure that it is Fletcher that they have taken a tier challenge and staked their existence on reddit. So it's Fletcher then?

It's Fletcher. An ex players said so too.

Sounds like overall a comitee decides transfer with Feltcher being the lead.

Better than Ed that is for sure.

I was expecting it to be John Mutough which would essentially be carrying on as we were. Fletcher would at least be someone different, I imagine they have spoken to top candidates with experience but probably realised bringing in someone like that will rock their boat.

Woodward doesn’t want someone coming in telling him what to do and taking control just someone new to assist him, Murtough and Judge.

This to a tee.

Ideally I'm sure most of us would have gone with someone proven ala Mitchell, however taking into account the clusterfeck that is our upper-management, anything new is a win for me.

And Fletch has always come across as an intelligent guy the few times I've heard him. If it is as nailed on as some people claim, I'm choosing to call that glass half-full for the time being.

Fingers crossed ey.

If it’s the likes of Rio and Fletcher then it’s pretty much same as before. Ed is just building himself a buffer without really any change management.

Or it's the same type of appointment than Butt and Fletcher/Ferdinand actually impressed and will be given all the room that they need to make changes.

Really can't see a better more attainable option than G Nev... yes he was a shite manager but he knows his stuff and is a smart fella. I reckon being a director of football is the perfect role for him.

Interesting to hear people claim that Fletcher is very intelligent. I remember watching team mate style interviews back in the day and he seemed to be the go to answer in questions about the least intelligent United player. Rooney and Ferdinand iirc both named him instantly as their dumbest teammate and someone else said it was between him and Anderson.

Seems perfect for us right now so

So it took us a year to hire frigging Darren Fletcher?....

Doesn't matter if Fletcher has intelligence or not what we need is the best of the best right now to get us back on track. Not a yes man for Woodward.

Any DOF is a yes man for the CEO... CEO always cuts the cheque

So it took over 18 months to decide on hiring an ex player....

I'm not sure about the link here, being an ex player shouldn't accelerate the process. Ideally even if you have a favorite, you should still follow a thourough process and give yourself the opportunity to see what is out there. Also with this type of hiring, it's a good idea to bring lots of people and let them share their ideas, the more people you bring the more ideas you can potentially steal.

The issue I have is Fletcher was playing this season, so I very much doubt they have been talking with him about this for very long...
Stealing ideas is great, but I have a feeling this is an appointment to appease fans/critics and not much will change

It's an improvement on Ed calling the shots, at least.

In realiity he never actually did, and he will still where he did anyway (deciding budget and cutting cheques)

The thing about Fletcher is that when he was sick, he was around the club and studying for his badges, he is a lot more like Butt than any other player. It's not as if the idea came last week, he has been working on a future in management for years, I don't know if he is ready or even competent but I wouldn't be surprised if he has been in touch with the club during the entire process, maybe he will become a coach or a technical director but I won't be surprised when he is back at United and it won't be to please the fans.

Nope but he is very very good. Would say already better than Meunier. Some players just impress you to no end when you watch them. AWB does that for me.

Meunier would be a good signing. Average defensively which is concerning with how bad our defence is but still much much better than what we got. 2 or 3 years later than ideal though.

Won't be complaining if we sign him. As long as it's in the 20-30 mil euro range it is intelligent business.
Our main problem with signing AWB is Dalot. He's not ready yet and getting Meunier makes the most sense in that he'll be first team and Dalot will probably play EL and cup games, give him time to bed in and improve on his defending. That's if AWB is for sale, he recently said in an interview he'll be at Palace next season.

Hypothetically speaking, if we sign Sancho or any RW this summer along with Meunier, we could sign AWB next summer and have Dalot as a RW roating with Sancho or another RW but then it means Chong on loan for a couple of seasons unless he's used as a LW.

It's an improvement on Ed calling the shots, at least.
He'll still call the shots, don't worry he's not going to give up on that responsibility.

Again who are these fans that are pleased because we have Darren Fletcher. If he was the best candidate so be it. I real don’t care aslong as we are implementing the right change. G.Nev needs to quiet down as he knows as much about these guys as us. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t hang around with Darren Fletcher on a daily basis to know what he is qualified on and vis versa.

Fletcher isn't ideal but I'd rather him than any of our other former players/coaches that were linked to the job.

Not sure Fletcher will be a yes man. He loves United and will have been watching the shamble we have become. He will be determined to get the club back on track.

This is a great example of why we need a director of football to decided it doesn’t matter how old Dalot is, AWB is a clear upgrade and improves the quality of the side. Wait on Dalot for what exactly so we can moan in 5 years he’s not at the level of AWB playing for Man City.

I think Fletcher would be a great shout. I certainly wouldn't have thought Van Der Sar, or Overmars had the same level of credentials for their roles but they made it their own.

A lot of fans very quick to forget the time he had the appearance on Monday Night Football with Carra. He was excellent. Very insightful, very knowledgeable and i remember being quite shocked by his analysis.

A lot of people very quick to detract any credit. Has played at the very top, and the very bottom. Has won titles and been relegated. Hasn't been born with a silver spoon in his mouth and has worked hard and made an impression wherever he has been. If he can transfer that ethos into a suited employment role elsewhere, i have no doubt he will do well. What's the worst that could happen? We won't realise until we give it a go.

Ps here's the Monday Night Football feedback for those who haven't seen it

Would love to see him in the role but he has battered ( quite rightly ) into these players ( and into Woodward )in recent months so would need a lot of humble pie from Woodward to sanction this

It might show us that he's not a spineless, flaccid slab of corporate mush if he does that. Shows that he's putting the club before his own pride. And who fecking cares if the players he's bashed don't like the appointment, what he's said is completely true and they should listen.

He's said he's not experienced enough and doesn't want the job. Also that its a shambles hiring ex players for technical roles if you watch his full MNF rant!
