Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

I tend to agree on that point. However if you listen to that Scholes interview he mentioned VDS got the business education to make the role he has now at Ajax, has Fletcher done the same?

At this point we have a real lack of seniority and experience at management level.
There is no studying one can do to be a DoF tbh. Just has to be a good analyst, manager and have a great football knowledge. No course for it really.

While there is no course to be DOF, the job is that of management. Some knowledge from a degree helps than jumping from playing career into the role.

VDS worked as analyst for sometimes IIRC, then worked as marketing director for Qjax. He worked his way up to CEO position. He wasn't just given in silver plate the CEO role.

VDS did some serious studying in sport management. He set his goal to continue where he left at his retirement.

Couple lads on Reddit with reliable sources saying it's Darren Fletcher as well. Apparently it was between him and Phelan and it's going to be more of a committee rather than 1 person calling the shots.

In other news apparently Meunier is a done deal pending agent fees and medical, for better or worse...

First it was argued that the club needs more football men because it only has business men. The board then interview Vidic, Rio and Fletcher. Now it is argued the football men have no business acumen and need to get degrees and business experience.

You really couldn't make it up.

It's not business degree experience, but management experience. Pretty much giving rookies the new role that nobody to check on them (or Woodward wants it that way so he can chime in).

The talk was always to give Woodward some help with the football matters. They have plenty of experience as players in that regard. Why do they also now need management experience, when Phelan remains at the club?

Many former pro players are plain incompetent when going into management. Here we're talking about guys who yet to try their hands on low level/ less pressure management. This is new role. Even Phelan can fail on his own part, what the hell a committee that one person has to babysit the unproven others. Dealing with Woodward should be enough.

Edit: look it this way, this is a job, not training center. The state of this club means everyone have to carry their own weight. Why would we need more learning on job personnels when even OGS and the like Carrick are on the learning curve themselves as managers and assistants, and never learnt Woodward to boost?

I like what i've heard from Fletcher in interviews in the past. Growing up he was a big fan of Fernando Redondo and Clarence Seedorf. He also knew his limits as a player and his strengths when he broke into the United first team. I'm quite optimistic about him becoming our Technical Director.

Bringing in an inexperienced ex-player into a new role at the club that has less power the Woodward and a broken structure around it.

What could possibly go wrong :)

At least he isn't EW, and anything that isn't EW sounds legit to me!

I'm slightly worried about how it seems we are now going about this. We appear to have moved from bringing in an experienced DOF to oversee things, to now bringing in a bunch of ex players with no experience to form some form of committee. While it may work, it looks like a lot of risk to me, and with the state the club is in, isn't something I would like to see us take.

I'm all for bringing them in for support roles so they can build experience and then potentially move up, but throwing them straight into the deep end isn't a good idea. All that is likely to happen is we have a bunch of inexperienced people playing yes man or scapegoat for the Glazers and Woodward. Which is hardly going to change anything in how the club is being run.

Daniel Levy is not a football man as well. what Ed need is someone who can help him make the footballing decision.

Rio, Phelan and Fletcher is such an uninspiring shortlist but Fletch is definitely the pick of the bunch for me. The problem is it's another huge risk given the position we're in. Appointing an inexperienced manager and technical director could be as catastrophic as the time we gave Moyes the keys and replaced the backroom staff with his men, while fecking Ed Woodward replaced David Gill.

I read an article earlier that suggested a DOF was someone on the same level as Woodward and will have as much authority, whereas a Technical Director works under Woodward, Woodward still makes the final decisions and it could basically be a token appointment to make it look like changes will occur while Woodward retains all power.

So that worries me.

Did you think it was ever going to be anything different? They will never dilute power away from their main aim of making money.

Just what we fecking need, brilliant.

It's already a committee that decide our targets, Mourinho lost his shit over this last season. We have two head scouts that watch players for a manager and feedback to Ed. We had a situation last season where one head scout said the player was good enough to play for United and the other head scout said he wasn't, and they were at an impasse over it, so guess what happened? Absolutely nothing because no one could make their mind up. I think the player was Maguire in the end.

This is also one of the reasons Langley left United.

Are there any indications that we might hire someone? Do we have some relaiable sources? And why does nobody push Woody over this issue?

How fecking hard is it to hire Paul Mitchell Ed!?
The role we're hiring for obviously doesn't have any autonomy. It's just something to appease the fans.

There's talk that the DOF will just be another part of a committee (we already have a transfer committee...) making it about 6 people who have to all agree that the managers target is good enough to play for United...

This is why we're a fecking disgrace.

Two possibilities: One; He's decided to stay at RB as he's begun recruiting already, statement pending. Two; He's not in the frame and never has been.

What do you suggest? Asking him? It's been done a hundred times and we have got the usual answers. He's not compelled to answer questions from the media,he's responsible to the Glazers. We know he doesn't give a shit about the fans, why should he come out and make a statement like some dirty politician who's been found in bed with 2 choirboys and needs the public reassurance.

We have been shoehorning players into positions they are not specialists in, why stop there! Lets do the same with the people making desicions about transfers and the future of our footballing strategies, since it clearly is a winning formula.

Who have we 'shoehorned?' Carrick,Mckenna,Butt? They are all qualified coaches who are not administrators. McKenna was instrumental in bringing through a very good Southampton youth. His U18s still play a brand of football the first team can only dream about.

The people currently in administrative roles have been there a while, that's the problem!

We're referring to the scouting side. We've currently got two head scouts and now we're bringing in a DOF. Too many chefs, not enough cooks.

A blend of various competence and experience is more often better equipped to take good decisions then relying on a one individual decision maker. Doesn’t matter how good you’re nobody gets right all the time. It’s a lot of data to process.

What Crossy1686 said.

We need a better structure in the club and experienced people in the right positions where they are specialists in. Right now it is a mess. We need a few people who can make desicions fast who know what the feck what they are talking about.

But there's no evidence we are bringing in a DOF.

All the names being banded around are pure speculation and conjecture

So we have been looking for a DoF for more than a year and we finally choose an ex-player who was an active football player a weeks ago at Stoke. Of course, I love Fletch but It's really weird. (If true)

Yeah Sounds like Fletcher and Phelan + our current scouts as part of a transfer comitee.

Meunier first signing. No AWB will hurt us down the line when he joins a rival.

AWB isn't the only RB that's good.

Nope but he is very very good. Would say already better than Meunier. Some players just impress you to no end when you watch them. AWB does that for me.

Meunier would be a good signing. Average defensively which is concerning with how bad our defence is but still much much better than what we got. 2 or 3 years later than ideal though.

Won't be complaining if we sign him. As long as it's in the 20-30 mil euro range it is intelligent business.

But you stated that he'll be off somewhere else. If that's the case, then feck it, there'll be others.

PS: don't dream Palace will sell him to us for under 30mill
