Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

Whether its a good idea or not, its better than what we have at the moment. Lets give it a chance before we slag it off....if it happens
Whoah! there. You can’t come in here and start throwing around rational posts like this, that’s not how it works.

Behave he's thick as pig shit, this is the guy who had been at Old Trafford for years and was doing a documentary about his time at United, he was being filmed in his car on the route he took from his home to the training ground every single morning and yet he twice managed to get lost, and intelligent people don't forget to take a drug test.
 Honestly not sure what forgetting something has to do with intelligence.

Thanks for this. Interesting read. Reads almost as a Barca promotional piece at times but it is interesting to see all the things they are doing? The thing that worries me is that if anyone tried to implement something similar at our club, the ownership would balk at the cost.

Don't want to stick my nose in but to state the bleedin' obvious United must get this appointment right if the DoF is to be part of the top decision makers at the club (if not, what's the point of the search process?).

If the main priority is to oversee transfers and contracts this is no job for an ex player with few contacts outside of those who handled his career.
The guys you are competing with have a network of top agents and club execs on speed dial. You really need to acquire those skills, preferably a guy that your rivals covet.
The alternative seems to be to get someone who is a populist choice but a big risk as far as efficiency is concerned.
The next round of appointments United make is crucial. Get them wrong and it may take a long time to recover.

We”ve already got the big appointment(manager) wrong.....If we get the others wrong we won’t recover for the next 4-5 years....

The Guardian says Ferdinand is being considered as “Technical director”. so Ed still decides everything while Rio idenfies potential signings for him. I don’t even know the difference between this T.D position and Chief Scout.

Shifting blame to whoever gets this job instead of Woodward.

Nothing against Rio. It’s not as though he’d make anything worse but I was kinda hoping this appointment might make the club look like it was taking things seriously again.

Moving on...

Appointing Rio would be utter lunacy.

The guy has no experience in football outside of being a player. We need to go out there and get the best in class technical director and for god sake don't turn us into Old Boys FC.

Rio given the opportunity twice to shut down the rumours on BT Sport and refused to do so on both occasions :nervous:

Replacing Ole is part of the next round of appointments that I referred to.
Most would agree that only blinkered stubbornness will keep him in the job beyond, say, the end of the year.
It may all right itself with a summer clear out and an injection of fresh players but few outside of United's fanbase expect that to happen.
The DoF whoever they may be would have to be prepared to axe Ole fairly quickly if necessary. Would Phelan or Rio be comfortable doing that?

I'm not sure if this is short sighted but if Rio can convince the likes of de Ligt and Sancho to come here, why not? He has a certain charisma and both will surely know and recognise know him from his playing days

Nothing will change as long as Woodward and the Glazers are in charge. If the stories about who we're linked to are accurate, then Woodward wants a PR coup. Someone who will keep the fans inside. Not someone who is experienced at the job and has his own ideas.

Don't think it is charisma that will decide this. Given the state of the club, players wanting to win trophies will pick other clubs over us.

Right, cool, amazing, might as well. Seems like we're dead set against any boring sensible decisions and are more interested in throwing wild hail marys that might either work perfectly or somehow burn Old Trafford to the ground.

Everything is nonsense, nothing matters, we'll be champions in two years. Or relegated.

Yeah he’s charismatic. He won’t need to have experience of doing contracts, we have people for doing that. Hopefully the job would take over from Ed in terms of convincing players and staff to come to United

Rio’s behaviour on BT Sport means there is definitely something to this.

To be fair to Rio, he's not all clueless. He is progressive and in tune with the modern game or at least the structure you need to have. I can't remember the exact content as it was quite a few years ago, but I remember being impressed with his knowledge. Never thought he looked anywhere outside of England. Maybe he might not be bad. Certainly he's a great networker. However, we need others to work with him if this is happening. I don't understand why we don't get a non-United person to add to the 'group'. Someone with experience who can provide objective feedback and impart knowledge of certain things that our ex players would not be familiar with.

Not worked out badly for Liverpool to be fair...
Was just about to say that. Still think they should have a 'neutral' within that group imho.

Employing ex-players should have been planned before Fergie’s retirement and when were a running success. Several of us advocated that when the club was under public ownership before the Glazers. Our rebuild is going to be huge, and we need experienced and capable people. The problem for these old players is their little experience and have been outside of the club during our difficulties.

Ducker Says Rio is connected to some sports agency? Means he would have the ‘contacts’ that people on here are adamant a DoF would need, he’s also a very charismatic and recognisable figure who would genuinely have Uniteds best football interests at heart.

Don’t understand how us copying the Model of Ajax/Liverpool/Bayern is being received so badly. People just want to criticise everything united do atm, I would see no difference in us hiring Rio to Ajax hiring Overmars or even VDS but because it’s us we’re ‘Finished’

I’m all for it.

Exactly Rio is at least as qualified as those two if not more .
