Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

This mythical, mystery DOF who's going to make a lot of great signings and everything will be fine.

We need someone like Gary Neville who understands the ethos of the club and has a vision going forward. Some random wanker from Southampton will be overwhelmed by it all.

And then GNev helps pick the coach. If he doesn't think Mourinho is right then fair enough but he'd get rid of the circus and back the coach until the time was right.

Neville would want Pochettino in my opinion. I'm not a massive fan but I'd back it because there would be more of a long term vision about what was needed to be achieved.

G.Nev is on cloud 9 with his preferred vision for this club. No thanks.

Mitchell's from Manchester.

Also, why would Mitchell, someone who's performed well in this job for years, be overwhelmed but Neville, who's never done the job before, wouldn't be?

The next time we shall hear about this DOF hiring, will be when we have another disastrous transfer window or if he is forced to fire Jose before the season ends (ie. he got another managerial appointment wrong, in quick succession).
The DOF statement is issued by the club, when things go wrong and to keep the press/fans quiet.

Woodward is not going to give up the power without being forced into it. And by "forced", I mean when things go disastrously wrong. There is absolutely no reason for Woodward to give up power/authority to a DOF.

I've read this multiple times about the DOF being given full authority and it's absolute nonsense. Woodward is the boss and as such will be ultimately accountable. It's not about him "giving up power". It's about appointing someone who knows what they are doing to drive the football direction of the club.

The aim should be to appoint the right expertise to the right positions within the club to assist Woodward and the Glazers who aren't going anywhere.

Neville knows better than any outside candidate the type of player, personality and vision that United want. He understand the youth and has great links within the game.

He runs a football club. He knows the business side of things excllently.

He has great contacts in the game who would aid with scouting and recruitment.

He's very intelligent about football and has good principles.

He's better than any other candidate in my opinion.

Feel sorry for anyone who actually believes we're going to hire a DOF. Will be in for a surprise.

This.

"Here's the new manager everyone..."

Leonardo Jardim sat there, biggest job of his life and it dawns on him he has to manage the whole football operation with that b(w)anker Woodward sticking his ore in. His only experience being coaching players at a club who average about 15k a week.

Disasterous. Going to be so harsh on the next manager. Mourinho has done a solid job.

All your posts are either about Woodward or Mourinho. It's a bit odd

It's his job to stick his oar in if he thinks the Manager is taking the piss

I sincerely hope you are not basing this opinion on his performance as Valencia manager in which he was sacked after 4 months. May as well just give it to Giggsy in that case.

The only candidate is King Eric the Great.

Gary Neville is absurd choice for DOF. The man who believes that Moyes shouldn't never have been sacked.

Ed, is that you? Blindly defending Jose and now suggesting the worst possible option for DoF Neville. With this guy as DoF we would still have Moyes and probably be in League 1 by now.

The reason Neville won't happen is because he hates Woodward and rightly slags him off all the time. Neville is still a supporter.

The DOF you want is a figment of your imagination.

Nobody on here knows who Paul Mitchell is. They're just trying to convince themselves he's some genius who will sign loads of great players.

Not sure why you bring it up, I have no idea who Paul Mitchell is and I never said I did. However listening to Neville's constant BS on how Moyes deserved more time or that we should have swapped Martial for Willian makes me convinced he would be shocking option as DOF.

He said he wasn't happy with how Moyes' sacking was handled.

Neville has hired and fired managers at Salford no problem. The guy is a winner.

If anybody honestly thinks he'd have given Moyes more time at the end of 13/14 is deluded.

Yep Neville's work at Salford should mean the move to working in a similar role for Utd would be almost too easy for him? Surely he'd want a bigger challenge.

Funny enough, that's the only reason you want Neville as a DoF even though he has zero experience in that role and show no interest in it.

Sometimes the accusations will be false.

I want Gary Neville as I agree with most he says, he has my principles which is United's principles.

He also owns and runs a football club, that is pretty good experience.

What does he have in the way of connections within the game or experience in a high profile role, at one of the biggest clubs on the planet, that leads you to place him above all other potential candidates?

Or is it that he simply shares an irrational hatred of Ed Woodward and the United board of Directors in general (according to you)?

He has loads of connections in the game ffs.

You build them anyway, who does this Paul Mitchell have as contacts?

Ring any top European club and ask them if they know who Gary Neville is and then ask them if they know who Paul Mitchell is.

The reason why I know people are making it up as they go along on here is that I actually know a bit about Paul Mitchell. He's not even a traditional director of football, he's more of a chief scout and player recruitment. He wasn't DOF at Tottenham. Dan Ashworth is a DOF for eg.

I actually said I'd have GNev as DOF and then surround him with good player recruitment people. No reason Paul Mitchell couldn't be one of them.

Saying that Moyes should stay when you're a pundit (when your brother is on the coaching team) and having to make the decision to sack him when you're an actual stakeholder are two pretty different things.

I do. He is a famous hairstylist. I dont know about his recruitment policy but he is badly needed at this club if only to sort out Pogba and Smallings hair.

Shows you how much crap he talks. Easy to talk a big and support managers when he's not involved. You want someone like that in such an important role? No thanks.

It's so silly people seeing people saying Woodward would give up power. Regardless of us bringing in a DoF he would still have the authority over them.
