Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

Great second half much more like it. I suspect that it is only delaying the problem. As long as Woodward is calling the shots we will be in trouble more often than not. Mourinho might not be right for us but not many better either. Was reading that the Glazers have spent an average £100m a season less than City and Chelsea since they took over. The money they have taken from United is less than it cost Sheikh Mansour to buy Man City! We are being run by asset strippers who have only really sanctioned big spending sprees when we finish outside the top four. They spend just enough to keep us comparatively competitive and put more value on star names with social media presences rather than a coherent vision for the club. City went out and spent over 100 m quid on full backs alone last season. Jose was not allowed to buy a centre half this summer. Got away with it when Fergie was there but they have been found out since he left. Good to see fans with banners giving off about them and supporting the manager.

Yeah, it's not like he's proven time and time again how incompetent he is on the football side he thinks he knows. From transfers to selecting and backing managers he's been woeful but he keeps playing football manager with our club for giggles while you guys defend him. :wenger:
He's done some silly things for sure. I think he's done some good things with the clubs best interests at heart, too. So, all in all, I think the abuse he gets is a bit too much.

Yes he does....he should of brought in a DoF a long time ago but he thinks he can do it all himself.
Does that warrant abuse, though? Fans holding signs in the crowd and flying banners above the stadium? I wouldn't even want our fans doing that to José who I'm no fan of.

Transfers that were the targets of our managers who he has backed? Selecting managers? He didn't select Moyes, while LVG and Mourinho were the best available options at the time, and the options that majority fans were happy with. There's a lot of revisionist stuff on this forum when it comes to that. How do you know that he's clueless at football knowledge or that you know more than him? Have you been a professional footballer? Just because he was an accountant, doesn't mean that he doesn't know football. People love to pretend that Woodward doesn't have communication with our scouting staff, players, coaching staff, player agents, and other teams' management for transfers, yet somehow he is more clueless than all of us.

Ever considered why we haven't had a DOF yet?

Yup, more incompetence from this man.

Anyway if you knew a thing or two about American sports, you will know Woodward is the General Manager of the team while Mourinho is the head coach. He's supposed to be Mitch Kupchak while Mourinho is Phil Jackson. To get a DOF means he's giving away a big part of his job as a General Manager. That's a demotion, and he wouldn't be able to justify his salary. So this will never happen.

But it may not be his decision to make if Glazers want to go Dof route with new person handling footballing side of the business then Woodward has to accept that or leave he is not the owner of United he is just an employee.

"We don't need new ball playing defenders". Football expert and long life coach Ed Woodward knows the best.

Neville said he was playing against Mou all summer
Neville talks a lot of shit, I realize that he's a club legend, but that doesn't mean we give weight to all the nonsense that he has said over the years. He wanted us to give Moyes more time ffs.

I find it hilarious how Neville, Scholes and Rio are all backing Mourinho as a manager while crucifying him over and over.

“He’s coming out in press conferences, he’s constantly having a go at players, he’s having a go at people above him because he’s not getting what he wants and I think his mouth is probably out of control and I think he’s embarrassing the club[but I back him].”

What a load of rubbish. How do you expect him to look two and a half minutes after the goal? Was Mourinho still celebrating it at the time?
I could be wrong but i thought BT panned to him when we was celebrating the goal.

Well , yes , he was right , what changed afterwards ? Not much .

Things need to be cleared up asap. Which senior club source briefed the press? And then went and briefed the press again to take back what they just briefed previously?

The board need to clarify its position immediately.

For a man that has the power to wield the axe, he’s found strange ways of “not backing” Jose. By all accounts, we hunted for Jose’s CB right up to the last hours of the window. Jose kept his job despite slagging off the club, the players and Ed at every opportunity. Jose has reduced the club to a laughing stock all on his own.

Ed - only thing I took issue with was the article on why Ed didn’t back Jose fully with unlimited funds. Logic seemed fine but wasn’t in great taste. What else has he done wrong?

For all we know, Jose and Mendes insisted on not having a DoF. We know that LvG didn’t want one either. All signs seem to indicate we’ll go for one soon. Let’s hope it’s the right pick.

It's truly bizarre, the extreme animosity so many of our fans have towards him. The man hasn't even said anything publicly, so much of it is based on presumptions and people's preconceived notions about how clueless he is.
He's briefed the press multiple times ..

Link? Most of these 'Woodward briefings' are people randomly reading tweets and concluding it's from him with literally nothing to base the belief on, yesterday's leak being the latest example. The dof one was likely the only one from him and even that I'm not sure of.

What, you think a Glazer leprechaun is briefing the press? "Club hierarchy" is pretty much Woodward and the owners. Hence all the talk of zero footballing expertise in the boardroom. The report on the eve of our first game this season there was a clear briefing from Woodward, explaining why he didn't sign a centre back (mentioning Varane).

If all of those briefings were made up stories by the journos the obvious thing to do is publicly state they are unfounded, would significantly mitigate the damage.

Ockham's razor.

The report at the beginning of the season was his 'official press briefing' scheduled by the club every preseason. It was postponed this year hence why it came after preseason. We don't need any investigation for that because it was a formal briefing. Do you understand? Totally different from reading random tweets and making stuff up in ones head about the source

Like I said, who do you think briefed the press last night and then again, if not Ed or the owners?

Now you're just guessing with this 'who else could it be' reasoning. Plus you do realise the rumour is looking to be untrue. Why are you still trying to pass it as proof? Even if it was true you're still taking a huge leap concluding who the source is

I'm not stating it, I'm seeing it as the likeliest scenario. Senior club sources were cited, then when the story is changed, the same sources are cited. The journalist in question is being destroyed on Twitter. If he's made this up he's finished. We'll know soon enough though.

When something embarrassing comes out in the press that looks like a briefing from an idiot, if it's false, why wouldn't the board react, they can publicly challenge that, deny it, ban journos who make up stories from press conferences, anything really to make a point. But there's been nothing.

No huge leap IMV.

All it takes for you to believe a rumour is see 'senior sources' within the article? Think you need to be more vigilant with how you screen rumours if that's the case

This whole mess of a season started with him. If you don't trust the manager with signings, fecking sack him then and there.

He knew what he was getting into when we signed Jose. You either back him in the market or he'll go out of his way to prove a point.

I don't see why people are so excited to sign a new manager. 2 years on, we'll be having the same discussion again.

It's time for the club to seriously consider changing its structure. Woodward should be in charge of the commerical side, while we hire some football men to look after the transfers and the football aspect of things. Set a proper structure in place where we won't be so dependent on the manager.

No, it's anchored in my strong belief that Woodward is incompetent and the board too. That's the assumption I'm formulating other opinions on.

Mourinho was focused on the game but If Woodward cared about the club in anyway he would’ve had a huge smile on his face after that comeback.

Instead the horrible Cretin is sat there looking like he’s at a funeral. Woodward is the person that needs to be sacked he’s as much to blame as anyone.
