Man Utd set to appoint Director of Football (when hell freezes over)

Why are you taking Liveroool as an example when they have been absolute dogshite the last years and only started to become well last season when they started to plan well ?

We need to be like Madrid and Chelsea, have a great base and squad that can succeed under any good manager so we won't be affected by managerial change.
Sounds good.

I want to like Ed, he seems like a nice guy, but he’s so bad at his job.

Our transfer business has been dogshite ever since Fellaini season and under 3 different manager so I don't understand why are you annoyed at peoole looking at the only common factor in these 6 years.

Yes, we should get a DOF and isolate Ed from football side. Mind you pretty sure the next manager will love working with a DOf than to work with Ed.

It’s like you just ignored everything he said. You think Ed picked Fellaini and Co lol.

My point is this is common practice. Liverpool abandoned that moneyball nonsense and just trusted their managers with decisions. Maybe you are right though. I think Chelsea sometimes have conflict with coaches as they present other players the manager don't want. I am all for a change TBH but I think Ed should remain as he can get the blazers to release funds

Nice idea but then explain the thoughts of Ed this summer. Isn’t that basically what he did. Deny targets seemed not good enough. We need a DOF but I don’t actually have a problem with Ed. He’s the perfect CEO for most managers who want full control.

No I didn't. I said he shouldn't be letting manager choose targets or live or die with managers choices. We should have a structure and hire managers that follow it, build a squad that will benefit any manager without needing of overhaul once a new manager arrives. How is that hard to grasp ?

The fact that he lets managers choose targets while he's hiring managers with different and contradicting philosophies is a mistake on its own and it led to the mess we have.

Liverpool have a DOF dealing with transfers

Which is correct, but is also why Jose needs to go. He doesn’t do will with players that are not his. Chelsea proved that.

What I don't understand about Ed is that it literally makes so much sense to hand over football matters to someone qualified to deal with it, yet we don't have a DOF. Does he really like showing his incompetence about this to the rest of the football world? Just hand it over already and get on with the commercial dealings, which is what he's good at.

Maybe he makes a commission on transfers.

Hmm, what else. Make a list, perhaps.

I'm not asking from the point of view of the owners, they'll do what they want, whore the club out as the please, pocket money and end up selling for an astronomical sum having done little to deserve it.

But why would any supporter feel Woodward doesn't deserve the sack? Do people honestly think he's some sort of commercial genius? I'm sure those types are a dime a dozen. It's not some incredible trait.

I want him to be sacked, not demoted, sacked.

DOF. The why’s of it have been discussed to death in here.

I only ask because you've previously said that my criticism of the board isnt justified and when i suggested the board were prioritising commercial success over winning the league you said it wss just my feelings and imagination. As an example.

And it would be rightful to criticse the board if they had taken no action to rectify the things you mentioned. Your criticism of the board would be valid, for example, say, if we persisted with a manager, who just kept us in top 4 for 3 years and didn't investment much. Rather, they have consistently looked to change when things haven't gone well.

If this guy was the one tasked with selling United to Klopp, it's easy to see why Klopp subsequently made the Disneyland comment.

I still feel the board is doing the right thing by sacking now (let’s wait and see) rather than at the end of season when we missed top 4.

To me, if Jose were to get sacked this week, the board cannot be blamed that much for their actions over the last few years, probably this summer?. Well you could say perhaps you that we needed a DOF, but I don’t think LVG and Jose are the kind of managers who would have been comfortable working like that given their massive egos

This is what I said in the days right before the transfer window closed. Writing is on the wall.Glazers and Woodward are not supporting the team and the manager doesn't have the resources to meet the targets. Yes, we lost against West Ham, but again West Ham spent more than United this past window so it's not exactly a surprise. When a team is underfunded they'll under perform, it's true of any organization in any industry in the world.

1. What targets? Did anyone really expect us to win the league this season? Top 4 was a reasonable target But here we are in a place where no one expected us to be in (10th position heading into October). Are the resources given to Mourinho since his appointment derserving of our current league position? Are the lack of resources in your opinion the reason for the appaling football we play every week with no intensity, pressing, cohesion and passion? As I type this; Sanchez, Fred, Dalot, Lindelof are not playing against Newcastle. Bailly wasn't too the last couple of weeks and yet you want to give him more resources to waste? Does Woodward need to ramp up the resouces before the basics are gotten right?

2. And aren't you surpised as well that we lost to Brighton( Week 2), a team we spent more money than in the summer going by your logic? And are we also supposed to be losing to Newcastle?

Anything to defend the incompetence and ineptitude of Mourinho. It's maddening the amount of love he gets considering he has failed in properly utilizing the resources our club have offered him. Smh.

I couldn't have agreed more. Jose has been supported to the hilt and he unfortunately has absolutely nothing to show for it.

Mourinho threads constantly getting bumped when it is here people should vent their anger. This utterly daft clown accompanied with our awful ownership is one of the key reasons we are a sinking ship. Some other poster said that with these people in charge we will become the Dallas Cowboys of football, I couldn't agree more.

Well, that was me.

which particular decisions would the possible DoF make better? Just tell me? Because clowns are only you the posters who with every new bad game under the shocking manager, you blame him.

You probably imagine Woodward making all these decisions by himself not having a team of experts around him, that is very stupid to think indeed. Now imagine that Woodward made all those decisions since his arrival, which of them would the new DOF would make better? I am genuinely curious as to which managers would be hired and other decisions made?

Because unless we hired someone who could predict the future, those were all sensible decision at the time I'd say at least 80% of the people would choose. Hardly anyone would argue against SAF and Moyes, hardly anyone wouldn't snap Van Gaal who is known for his record, discipline, strong philosophy and attacking football and promoting youth, there could hardly be a better fit for us after Moyes fiasco. And hardly anyone wouldn't agree with proven Mourinho, probably the best manager of all times along with SAF after the Van Gaal fiasco, those were all sensible if not the best decisions most of the sporting director would make.

I really don't wanna insult people but it's a tough task with some posters here who can't use at least 10% of their brain capacity and to analyse the situation sensibly. Just blame it all on not hiring a DoF!

It's cuz when he sacks Jose anyway it's going to look like the dumbest move he's made yet.

How long have we been on the verge of appointing a DoF?

I'll tell you why we haven't, Ed Woodward's ego.

feck outta here Woodward.

Feel for him a bit. He might be out of his depth on the footballing side but doesn't deserve the abuse he's getting.

It's truly bizarre, the extreme animosity so many of our fans have towards him. The man hasn't even said anything publicly, so much of it is based on presumptions and people's preconceived notions about how clueless he is.

Yep. I mean, those signs in the crowd today were a bit OTT.

Hasn't he already made plenty of statements and press briefings this season? If he shuts up there will be far less hate for him, but everything he says just backs up the cluelessness.

Varane seriously?

When has he said himself he wanted Varane ?

And even if he did say he would have paid for Varane but not Harry Maguire what on earth is wrong with that?

Plenty of statements? No. Briefings? I recall the one where it was explained why we didn't sign a CB like Maguire, Boateng or Alderweireld. Varane was brought up as a point to say that we are willing to spend big money on a quality CB if he's available. Maguire and Alderweireld (rightfully) weren't viewed as options worthy of big money moves atm.

Fine. Then get a DOF to buy us good players because our manager's have been pissing me off. When I see Fred Bailly Lindelof on the bench and Miki at Arsenal I think £150m right there and what are we showing from it?

Ever considered why we haven't had a DOF yet?

Yup, more incompetence from this man.

Anyway if you knew a thing or two about American sports, you will know Woodward is the General Manager of the team while Mourinho is the head coach. He's supposed to be Mitch Kupchak while Mourinho is Phil Jackson. To get a DOF means he's giving away a big part of his job as a General Manager. That's a demotion, and he wouldn't be able to justify his salary. So this will never happen.

Promote this one, modmins.

Varane is not a realistic target.

We'd never get him from a Real who'd just won another CL title.

But Ed has to run his mouth and try to sound like the big wheeler dealer.

I'll bet he wears lifts.

Which makes the board even more daft than Woodward.

Yeah, it's not like he's proven time and time again how incompetent he is on the football side he thinks he knows. From transfers to selecting and backing managers he's been woeful but he keeps playing football manager with our club for giggles while you guys defend him. :wenger:
