Maguire | NOT McGuire or MacGuire

Not long ago we were laughing at City for buying Stones for 50m and now we are getting Harry fecking Maguire for 65m. Madness.

If Stones cost £50 million last year, Maguire is going to cost £65 million a year later. That's just the cost of inflation in combination with the 'United tax'.

£65 million for Maguire is about right in the current market.

Not when we've got 3 other centrebacks with World Cup experience. His problem is he can't pick a pair and give them a run. You can't expect any sort of consistency when you're forced into changing up the partnership every week.
FTFY. Maguire has a solid fitness record IIRC and going into the season with 3/5 CBs being constant fitness concerns (Bailly, Jones, Rojo) and unsure as to whether Lindelof will ever fully adapt to English football he would be a good signing.

He's one of the better ball playing CB's in the PL. We're in desperate, DESPERATE need of someone like that. Maguire or Toby would be fantastic.

EDIT: Toby Maguire, heh.

I don't think we'll get him this window. A player who desperately wanted to leave like Mahrez took almost a year to sign for City. I can't see them budging so soon on Maguire.

A waste of money on top of the 60mil + spend on CB's in 2 seasons. We need answers as to why we need another CB and how the ones we got can't be formed into a cohesive robust unit.

Pathetic really that we're in the market for another player in this position when another RB and LB should be greater priorities.

More good CBs available than good full backs.

Don’t see us selling Smalling. He’s a very good pure defender and quick. Having him and Maguire at the back would be a complimentary partnership IMO. We would be immense in the air too.

Except, they might see it as a rare Poborsky opportunity, rather than a struggle to keep the indispensible.

Stones might have his flaws, but I think he has way more to his game than Maguire

Van Aanholt isn't rated in the PL. He's a guy making up the numbers in the lower reaches of the division.

I like him.

He has enormous attacking threat and could be a good addition to most Premier League clubs IMO.

Tbh I don't give a flying feck of how much players cost anymore cause the value of a player will only be at the end of his career here and not the start of it. For me money aside, he's better than pretty much most of our CB's so why wouldn't we want him if he improves us. That said, I'm not convinced Leicester will sell anyway.....

i just want us to get a CB that will stay fit for the whole season - at least he fits the description there!

He's a decent CB, could develop in to a top player but it's surprising we're going for him. Perhaps it's an Aderweirelderiwilderilder-bingle-bangle-dingle-dongle smokescreen? Don't think he's better than what we have already.

I’m not sure, I was sort of thinking the opposite and we’ve probably agreed a fee with Leicester.

We’re presumably not responsible for the fee being quoted. If we have to go back to Levy after our public interest in Maguire, however, he’s possibly going to laugh and ask for £80m rather than crumble and sell Toby on the cheap.

I thought the issue with Toby was that he has some sort of clause where someone could get him on the cheap next summer, so not sure Levy has much chance of getting that much.

Tbh I like Maguire, but it just seems a bit odd us going all bells and whistles in telling everyone about it.

Manchester Evening News are now reporting that Leicester want £75 million for Maguire which may have just scared us away. To be fair I guess Leicester can ask what they want since he has 4 yrs left on his contract

It’s going to be difficult. If Maguire really wants to come he needs to do his bit I think

More good CBs available than good full backs.

It doesn't take care of a problem position in the squad as our CB's are all individually good players and just need a cohesive working formation to play in (apart from Rojo who needs to go). Taking advantage of the availability of good CB's does not solve the problem, in fact it makes it worse as we are overloaded with CB as we speak (we have 6 at my last count) so Maguire would just be coming into an already overloaded squad where he isn't even head and shoulders above what we have.

Good Fb's are harder to find but are available for the right price, we should be focusing our efforts there.

Has it become a bit of meme on here to misspell this lads name? Why are people calling him MacGuire for fecks sake! It's not exactly a difficult name to spell correctly.

This. I'm coming round to thinking that'd be a hell of a combo actually.
You need 2 centre backs who are excellent in the air in our league.
Jones is decent, but just not tall enough to be dominant against giants. Bailly can be erratic, as can Rojo, while Lindelöf I think i'd beat in the air.

So the same price as Alderweireld - we should just go for Maguire then.
Hopefully we can go back for Alderweireld in January.

In a way that is good, as Leicester went from not for sale to 75m, a 60-65m should make the deal go through.

I'm sure McGuire is the misspelling choice of many.

Bailly is our best defender? Surely we're after a partner for him, before anyone else. I know he has his injury issues but all our defenders do...

I'm not sure that's true to be fair. I think Smalling has proven to be the first name in defence when fit, and for all the criminal underrating is a colossus in the air, and in 1-2-1s, and is quick.
