Maguire | he stays!

Yeah. There was a consensus that Smalling was the one preventing us to score more goals because he couldn't "pass" from the back. Which was just silly. Since we now have 2 ball playing centerbacks, the excuse swift then to DDG.
I thought the De Gea-Smalling-Blind “triangle” was much the most likeable part of the LvG team.

The constant sideways passing was annoying as hell, but that wouldn’t have happened with midfielders ahead of them who actually wanted the ball. Not having attacking fullbacks obviously didn’t help either; Shaw getting his leg broken was desperately unfortunate.

He will leave, probably on loan, late on in the window

We will pay a % of his wage as well.

It’s what we do.

Everyone knows he’s on big wages and we want rid. The vultures will circle later when we are truly desperate.
We will then exercise the option to extend his contract by another year to protect his value. And then he will play 2 League Cup matches that year before he will inevitably leave for free.

We have seen this movie too many times.

many clubs can easily afford up to 200K for 3 seasons on Maguire, like Spurs & Aston Villa which should be an acceptable wage for an England NT player who is experienced at the top level.

We just need to wait and surely someone will come, it depends on what Maguire does but I believe it was made clear to him that he is 5th CB choice behind Lindelof & Shaw, so his chances of getting any game time is almost nil, and Southgate was pressed on the topic multiple times and he had no choice but to answer and say that if Maguire does not play, he will be at risk of not being selected for Euros 24, so I think Maguire will go with the sensible approach of leaving United to get enough game time.

Southgate is an annoyingly limited manager but he isn’t an idiot. We’ll never win anything with him for reasons that have been discussed repeatedly and at length, but he does seem to have put a stop to the long era of England’s getting embarrassed by minnow opponents.

Preserving his record of steady mediocrity will be important to him. He isn’t a Jose who will continue to play loyal lieutenants regardless of loss of form. If Maguire continues to put in solid performances for him despite not getting regular club football he’ll keep his place. And why shouldn’t he? If there’s any uncertainty in Southgate’s mind over whether he can still perform in those circumstances he’ll be dropped.

This may not have registered with Maguire who doesn’t seem particularly self aware.

I'm so sick of this man, he really doesn't take the hint. Read the room Harry, nobody wants you at club. Move on and get game time somewhere else, so we can end the nightmare.

Nobody is paying a reasonable fee and dumping that much money on him every week. Villa just signed Torres for 35m and will more than likely be paying him about 100k a week. Spurs have already spent 140m this summer and unless they sell Kane, they'll not be spending much more and won't be giving Maguire any 200k a week either, Kane gets that and it's more than what Son is on apparently.

There's better players than Maguire out there who will cost much less in fees and wages. Unless Utd subsidise his wages and sell him cheap he ain't going nowhere.

Wonder if our fans constantly making fun of him & turning him to a Meme has reduced interest & potential fees for us. He had a good season for us & been good for England, dont think he is bad not to play for Pl teams under the top 8.

Think it's been opposition fans more. Was chatting to my dad about this yesterday, regardless of how good or shit united are we are generally judged by the standards of a team challenging for the league, and our players get slaughtered when they aren't at that standard.

Think it massively damages our ability to sell players because as well as being on big wages, everyone in the country has heard how absolutely fecking awful they are when in reality they all contribute to a team challenging for a top 4 finish every year. Maguire improves most bottom half teams at the least, probably some lower top half teams as well. Same for mctominay and Fred.

He’s a good defender in the right system but we don’t want to play that way anymore and his time here is clearly over. He should be doing everything he can to leave for his own sake. He’s not caused any trouble or destabilising leaks to date so maybe he’s got his agent going about it all quietly in the background.

There is, its called the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

But even they might draw the line at Maguire
When that African politician is using Maguire as a metaphor of being shit and scoring own goals then there’s no hope for him

We didn't do it with one of our starters who played 60 games. I doubt we would do it with our 5th choice CB if he really stays till 2025.

Are you saying Maguire's too good to be 4th choice? Because if he's willing to stay despite that, that would be a good thing for the club to have somebody on the bench who's better than that.
That is too much common sense for this thread.

Not really, we can’t afford to be paying someone so much to be 5th choice. And he’s still the captain, which doesn’t look like it’ll change. Perhaps if ETH takes the armband off him and gives it to Bruno, he’ll take the hint. Though if history is anything to go by he’ll issue a statement saying he’ll fight to win the captaincy back.

There isn't many clubs outside the top 6 clubs who will be giving 200k per week to any player full stop, yet alone a solid but unremarkable somewhat aging 5th choice center back.

You might find the likes of West Ham/Aston villa go upto 200k for someone truly exceptional. Maguire isn't that though.

I actually would be happy to take him at West Ham as i do think he still has things to offer the right club (and West Ham current style would suit his strengths imo) but his wages are probably nearing 100k higher than what we'd pay for within our wage structure and he is nowhere near good enough to totally wreck that structure. I suspect that would be the case for most other clubs who would realistically be somewhat interested in him

Actual skills and qualities aside, when he steps in the pitch our defense just gets nervous. I don't know if that is a temporary thing but this is how it is. He isn't that bad, but he really doesn't inspire confidence as a squad CB.
I agree he can get nervous but if the side is going to improve he’s not one of the main issues.

Really the first 11 is where Ten Hag should be focusing all his spending this summer. Players like Eriksen moving to squad player will really help and the quality naturally filters down if we add to that first team sheet.

Selling a 4th or 5th choice CB as number one priority does very little when he’s not rocking the boat and can do a job.

I don't disagree with you in general but even if Spurs and Villa don't take him there is a chance of a team taking a chance on him in Italy for example, what I am sure of is that Maguire will not risk his NT spot as it is the only place he looks good playing in, he could very well accept a lower wage and I can see it happening

I think McTomminay is the only one who's easy to sell and probably has quite a few suitors.
Fred has a year left on his contract so I’d imagine he’ll be sold . We need a squad as well and I’d be very surprised if he got rid of both

It's pure delusion from his part - he's essentially 5th choice. Barring a freak scenario where we have a catastrophic injury crisis in defence, or the odd game he's brought on in the last 10 minutes or so to shore up, I just don't see where he thinks he's getting games.

He wants to stay because of his wages, the fact he can call himself a United player, and the fact that twit Southgate seems to perpetually pick him.
That's exactly it, he's still officially ManUtd's captain. He's on big wages and can justify not playing because Varane and Lisandro are ahead.

No top club will be interested, so what happens if he moves to a mid table team and fails there? He loses face. Can't risk it.

I wonder how ex-professionals view the comment "I'll stay and fight for my place" knowing that its really just a euphemism, for "Im happy to sit on my arse and take the £200k per week"

Ten Hag bench the team captain a lot last season. A sign that he has fall down the pecking order.

And i believe Maguire will still be 3 rd or 4 th options next season if he stays.

The biggest reasons why Maguire is doing a lot better with the nation team are.

1. England have a strong and well work collective
2. Maguire has Declan Rice infront of him

Reasons why i think Maguire is a player that will work well for Arsenal too if Rice end up at Arsenal.

Maguire can be like Gary Neville. Neville was just a very good and second best on his best as RB for United. But a strong and dominate United and collective. Neville wouldn't alone will pull down the level of team and collective. But instead the collective were lifting Gary Neville. Same as Maguire or who are just on second best level for England.

England is right now one of the top 4 team in the world. Beside France, Argentina. So that are the reasons Maguire is doing well for England.

Disagree with that. Seriously underrating Gary Neville here. There's a reason why he's always selected in the XI for Uniteds best ever line up. You could even make the case for England

what did rice used to be on weekly? Surely he was one of your top earners. If you’ve got him off your books now paying maguire might not be such an issue.

Surely premier league teams can afford it. They just won't choose to do it for Maguire.

Legitimately thought he’d have garnered more interest. Starting to feel bad for him.

Saudis, come save us from another Woodward catastrophe. He gave Maguire a 6 year contract in 2019 :o:mad:. Unbelievable, Maguire is going to stink on the bench for 2 more years it looks like...
