Maguire | he stays!

Dont mind him staying another year as a 4th choice. Replacing him will cost 10-20mn out of our limited budget.

Tbh to this day I still don't understand why we gave him that 190k a week contract. He was reportedly on 45k a week at Leicester ffs. And we were the only one who were interested enough to pay the 80m Leicester asked. Even 100k a week and the chance to play for United would be more than enough for him to sign for us I reckon. We're simply beyond stupid when it comes to contracts handling.

Clearly you forgot how bad we were when he played when Martinez got injured

Increase is the wrong way to look at if, every member of the squad took an automatic reduction for missing out on CL.

But it’s another reason to bash Maguire…so the media took it.

errr we would get a fee for him if sold. 30-40mil i reckon

If that was realistic we'd have already heard rumours of teams willing to pay that much.

The truth is that the kind of team that might be willing to spend that much on a defender with Maguire's wages just aren't interested in him.

He has two years left on his contract, right? I think the club will need to bite the bullet and pay off the difference in wage with his current contract to a potential suitor.

Is he gambling on Varane falling apart? The correct footballing decision would be to go somewhere where he can play every week. There are clubs out there where he’ll be one of the first names on the team sheet. In terms of salary, I get why he wouldn’t want to take a pay cut. Annoying for us, but I get it.

I think when we signed Maguire we'd finished 6th the season before, so technically you could argue that was his real wage. We have qualified for the UCL 3 out of the 4 seasons he's been at the club though (including this one) so calling it a wage rise is still quite disingenuous.

He does appear to be quite deluded as well based on his past pronouncements so he may well believe he can get back in the team somehow

If he is then he's naive. We had a period towards the end of last season where both Varane and Martinez were sidelined, and yet Maguire still couldnt get a sniff.

It's as clear as anything that Ten Hag doesn't rate him, so the writing should really be on the wall for him.

Surely there’s another Prem team who wants an England international? I don’t rate him but he is underrated.

Nah, absolutely 0 chance this happens, it's bordering on delusional to think it may. As others have said, clubs which could afford him fairly comfortably are simply not interested whatsoever, and clubs for which this would be a huge financial effort would be looking for a much, much better player for those levels of expenditure. So nope, it's either a free transfer and wage subsidy or keeping him. If we stick to football reasons he should 100% be let go, and the whole squad would be much better for it.

He's a walking meme. No club in the Premier league bar promoted clubs will want him. Oles tenure really screwed this club, some shocking purchases.

Not this England international though, for two reasons: his wages and his performances. The thing is PL clubs have people who watch other PL matches apart from their own.

Atleast we earned a profit on James, AWB has somewhat recovered under EtH and Bruno was a great purchase. Shame Maguire ruins all of that.

He needs Varane and Lindelof to both be injured to have a sniff of the first team. I think he will go in Jan after not playing for a few months to start the season.

Is his salary so high that even on a low selling price no one will take him? I find that hard to believe. Aren't all Premiership teams loaded?

Yeah this is why. He is a walking meme, even if he is a capable enough player those horror moments in a United shirt have killed his reputation.

I blame Southgate. For most players, it important to make sure you get game time with your club the season before an international tournament. But with England, Maguire is basically playing regardless what happens with his club.

Theres a Euros next year and given the fact that he will be 34 for the next world cup, these Euros could well be his last tournament for England.

We might sell him and pay the difference betweem his new salary and the salary he would get here until 2025, which a lot of clubs do when trying to get rid of an expensive player.

Let's be realistic: he's on huge wages, the price tag is not low and he's already 30. So, yeah, there must be some flexibility moves to get rid of him.

Exactly this.
The same applies to Sancho. We were the only one in for him. Even if his salary just got bumped 20 percent the prospect to play for Manchester United should have been more than enough for Sancho to join us.

Beyond stupidity how we deal with salaries. It's a big problem. Now we are stuck with Maguire and we can't replace him, because we need to sell first in order to buy players and this will stunt our progress.

The other thing is any club which does fancy him is going to play it smart knowing he's wanted off the books here. Harry Redknapp would have fleeced us...

I feel that by the time he eventually moves, it will be very late to get a replacement in

It's an automatic salary increase, like the decrease when we went in Europa League.

Nevertheless, he will stay as a fifth CB and play mainly the first cup games and potentially be loaned in January.

He has to play to keep his place in the national team. He won't play much will be under pressure.

We don't have the budget to replace him and it seems that reinforcing the CB positions aren't priority, so it's not on us to find a way out for him.

You're right. It's not a priority.
Our budget is as tight as it is. The only way Maguire will be sold is if we compensate him, but we don't have the money to compensate him AND buy an expensive replacement. The cheaper solution is to let him stay on as a backup. Don't see the takeover finalizing soon, so we are stuck with him. We could have done with a player like Timber who can play CB and RB though. I'm sure that if Ten Hag steps in and gives him a call he will come to us instead of Arsenal. Ah well...

It really is horrible reporting designed for rage bait.

Yeah we're unfortunately.

However another thing I don't understand is imo it's actually not that hard to offload him if we really want to. He's still a decent CB and like many said here would be perfect for a team that sit back. Imo he should worth at least around 30m in the current market.

Let's say his new club would give him a 3 years contract. 30m for three years means 10m a year or 200k a week. So if we give him away for free I don't think it's that difficult to find a club to take him in and pay his current wages. Because even with a 50k a week contract they'd have to pay 30m + 7.2m wages for three years if they buy him.

Imo the clowns at the top are actually the ones who are not only stupid but deluded here for thinking there'd be a team who would pay us 30m and pay him his current wages.

I actually can't envisage a club signing him. The only club I could really see taking him was Villa but they're close to signing a CB (can't remember who, but they've spent a lot of money on him) and Diego Carlos is back who they spent £28m on last year plus they have Mings and Konsa.

Leicester obviously have been relegated so they are out the picture, as well as the other top 6. Brighton won't touch him with a barge pole on the wages he'd ask and I don't think Everton will either due to FFP.

He's 30, on high wages, gone through a horrific extended period of form and will likely still cost more in transfer fees than many other better and younger players.

He's basically the diametrical opposite of moneyball. you're hoping that one of the old school British managers will want an England regular in the side for his deep sitting defence. There's Moyes, Dyche and Hodgson. good luck.

Let him go for 10m.

Either that or he sits on the bench for a few years. He isn't taking a wage cut, don't blame for that.

The salary increase is not the important part of that story, everyone is getting that regardless...

It says in the copy that he is open to leaving, that's the important bit. Up to now the story has been that he wants to stay and fight for his spot. If that bit is true, then he has seen sense and will put playing time above income.
