Mafia ii

System architecture wise, the PS3 is closer to a PC, as it does not have shared memory. When you get down to the processor level, that's when you have a problem with PS3, as it's totally different. It has a shitty single core processor, and the XB360 has three shitty processors that are very similar. Oh, on the PS3, it then has 7 (should be 8) little monsters stuck onto it.

If you don't use those little monsters, you are going to have a problem. RSX in theory, unified shaders aside, is a more powerful GPU than XGPU, however, it does not have that eDRAM so it has a problem, not with shaders, but with its fill rate. Why when Sony used eDRAM in the PS2 and the PSP they allowed nVidia to do this without I have no clue. RSX with eDRAM would be a very very capable GPU even by today's standards.

From Metacritic:

Playstation Official Magazine UK

'70'

There are moments when it feels like it's on the cusp of greatness, threatening to make you an offer you can't refuse, but the inevitable letdown is never far behind. [Sept 2010, p.104]

So, source considered, this game is likely garbage. feck.

I don't give a shit about the 360 version, Carol. Beat it.

Apparently the team who ported PC version to PS3 is new to this and this is their first game so Playstation version is kinda gonna suck compared to PC one.

So don't base your decision on PS3 reviews, if you are going to play Mafia 2, do it so on PC.

No shit.

2K have responded to complaints that Mafia 2 on the PlayStation 3 is graphically sub-par.

Low quality textures for grass and no pools of blood are some of the stand out flaws being flagged up in the PS3 version.

Here's the explanation:

"Hey guys,

When designing Mafia II, we optimized for each of the three different systems the game would run on to make sure the core experience was the best it could be. Because of this, there are some differences from one platform to the next.

In terms of the PS3 version, I wanted to clarify a couple points you have been asking about: There will not be highly detailed grass or large pools of blood, the cloth movement is less noticeable than, for example, the PC version, and the visual fidelity in the demo is generally representative of what you'll see in the full game.

Our aim is to make a cohesive and immersive experience and optimize the game for each platform so that it could run its best. And while there are some differences between each version, I'm sure you'll find that the core gameplay and the heart of Mafia II remains no matter whether you play on PS3, 360, or PC.

Thanks for your patience while I checked with the dev team on the specific issues you were asking about, and I hope you see you in Empire Bay next week."

Yeah it doesn't make a whole load of sense to us either. We wonder why, if all versions are supposed to be "optimised", the PS3 version falls so far short of its optimum output.

Mafia 2 has done just fine when it comes to reviews on other platforms. PC Zone was happy to award 80% to the game despite its crushing linearity.

All games are going to suck compared to the PC one. The lead designer and production manager on the other hand has made it clear that both the XBOX and PS3 versions look almost identical side by side. People need to remember that within that interview Elizabeth is talking about high end computers using their knew physx engine. Its shits on both consoles to an amazing point.

hoping to pre order. never played the first one, does anyone know if story continues

The first one had an incredible charm, although I never finished it.

Getting great reviews. Slight screen tearing Sparky but not as bad as the demo.

to be honest, I don't care. Its a game and massive blood pools and grass will not deter me from purchasing it.

Where? Link?

Sitting on 77%, from nine reviews on Metacritic. It will be interesting to see in which direction that score ends up going. Down, I would imagine.

When talking about Mafia 2, consoles and PC are totally different experiences, if you want a great game, play it on PC, lower console reviews are not exactly right.

After reading various previews and reviews, this for me has gone from a must-buy to a rental-only.

I'm sure it's still a pretty damn good game, but most reviews tend to suggest that the whole emphasis is on the story, with little to no diversions of worth. Nothing wrong with that of course, but just means it shouldn't really warrant a purchase.

It's not really the ten hour thing that bothers me, but rather the lack of diversions, replayability and online*. Read Dead Redemption was a 'ten hour game' but it's mini-games, exploration and frantic online modes made it last well beyond that.

*I do stress that I prefer games with an emphasis on single player unlike most games released nowadays, but again if theres very little content in sp then some online aspect DOES help.

Well, the added content on PS3 supposedly consists of another 20 missions, with a bit more freedom than the standard SP.

I wouldnt look too much into this "20+ missions" content, from what I read they're simply a collection of quick, arcadey sub-missions that dont last very long. Besides, I'm not comfortable with opting for an inferior port on the PS3.

10 hours? That really is not enough regardless of side missions.

Eh? What are you guys on about?
So what if it's 10 hours?
Better 10 hours of brilliant game than for example GTA IV that becomes boring after a while.

I completed first Mafia in less than 10 hours but it's still one of the best games there is.
And besides, it is probably 10 hours if you are speedrunning the game, if you are taking your time and enjoying every bit of it there is at least 15 hours in it.

4/10 and reasons for that...:wenger::lol:

People are either stupid or can't recognise good game anymore, seriously,

It is a sad day when a game like GTA IV gets 100/100 everywhere and masterpiece like Mafia 2 gets low review because it's "linear".

It is funny how the reviews are near identical. Complaining about driving a lot, complainaing about the handling of the cars (not that it's bad but that it's realistic), moaning about the checkpoint system, getting killed by bullets is too easy, breaking the law ie driving too fast makes the cops come after you (again the whole realism thing is lost on them).

Yeah, they probably would give it good reviews if Vito could jump around from building to building, throwing cars at everyone and makes rampage like Hulk, drives Ferrari and Porshe at 300 km/h breaking everything and everyone in front of him and going around corners without letting off the gas button, and listening to techno-trance-crap music instead of this "boring" one.

 From looking at some of their other reviews i think you're right.

The Gundam: Dynasty Warriors got an 8, and that's just a mindless hack and slash with it's main selling point being that there are hundreds of feeble things for you to hack at mercilessly (although granted it can be fun co-op).

I've decided that the reviewers there are idiots.

The playing time seems to be a joke, though.

A quick comparison. I'm playing The Saboteur at the moment and here are my stats: total game time: almost 35 hours, mission progression: 98%, freeplay targets progression: 25%.

I've been playing that recently, there are a shit load of freeplay targets although i wouldn't say they're the most exciting diversion.

To be fair Eurogamer are bunch of spazzers, hardly anyone takes them seriously. I'd agree that the first Mafia game was a masterpiece, it was well ahead of it's time and both the gameplay and story were out of this world.

However nowadays these type of games are hardly in short supply, besides the story there's not much else unique this game can offer. After you've clocked your 10 hours or so completing the story, what next? There's little to zero else you can do in the game.

I'd also agree that GTA IV was just above average, but you're forgetting that GTA was packed with diversions and an frantic online mode that added longevity to the game.

As I said, I still think Mafia will be a great game and I really am keen to experience the epic story. However I don't think I can justify spending £40 just for that when I can just as easily see the whole thing through in a rental or two.

Gamespot gave it 8.5/10; PC, xbox and PS3
