Seeing as we are Mad Men Giffing...

The first couple of episodes of 7b are strange, in a classic Mad Men way. All of the Don scenes have a weird, Lynchian dreamlike quality to them, they're both surreal and really tense. It's hard to see a successful ending for him, he's given up on so many possibilities of having a settled and happy life while he gets older and more broken each year. If the show finishes with him in California (or anywhere that's not New York in the 70s), and Peggy and Sally loving him, I think that's as good as it gets.

And someone punching Harry Crane would be most welcome.

What happened to Cutler?

Jesus, Thierry, just watch it already.
Done!

Thought the penultimate episode was the classic of the final run, though that may have just been because it hits you the hardest emotionally (re-watches will confirm I spose). The Betty/ Sally scenes, and Don coming clean at the table with all the veterans were all just so raw... I cried at one, already forgotten which. The final episode was a bit too much of a box ticking exercise, giving each character a pleasant send off (while showing Harry continue his slow transition to a 1970s New York Pimp*), except for the Drapers, whose scenes were all superb. Don's future seems pretty mapped out with Coke. You can imagine he'll remarry and divorce a couple of times, and run away to California a few more times, but Sally, Peggy, and maybe even Bobby will pull him back eventually... he's not that terrible a guy to ever leave them for good.

Feel like Peggy's ending especially could have been done better, but I'm not sure how. It definitely makes sense for the character for her to stay at McCann and not jump straight in with Joan, but the Stan scene didn't get me as much as it should have. But then I loved Pete's unrealistic happy ending, so I dunno. Can't really criticise Weiner.

The Wire's the best show I've ever seen, but I enjoyed this a lot more. I've never come across better written characters in any media.

p.s. Peggy having a cactus to remember Pete by seemed oddly perfect, I loved that.

*Now thinking the show actually should have ended with Travis Bickle shooting Harry Crane.

It really was.

Most other shows would've probably gone for the high drama approach of having their past with the child etc unraveled, but instead they have a mildly touching final scene and Peggy gets...a cactus.

As for the Peggy/Stan scene, I remember thinking at the time that it'd have made a little bit more sense if they'd been drunk/high, or having an emotional heart to heart on a late working night or something. It felt like it kind of came out of nowhere in the middle of the day, but it was not too bad anyway.

i started a rewatch as soon as it ended and i'm at the mid point of season 2.

i have to say second time round i'm enjoying the early seasons so much more. i remember on the first view it took me pretty much the entire first 2 seasons to really get into it and i wasnt even sure if i'd stick at it. Now that i've grown to love it i appreciate it so much more, it really is a work of art. without getting all brokeback mountain every shot is just perfect even the tiniest scene is framed so well its a feast for the eyes and second time round you spot so many little touches that you missed at first. If anything knowing what happens has improved the experience as you can sit back and take it all in. I'm starting to believe this show might actually be mankinds greatest achievement

last night I watched the episode where Salvatore has Cosgrove round for dinner and its such a great scene. Sal is really a great character who plays the closet case so well, its a shame he was 'killed' off as there was a wealth of potential there

Sorry ifi t's been asked in here before but I'm trying to avoid spoilers so haven't read through this thread. I'm at the end of Season 6 and have the start of Season 7 downloaded (first 7 episodes) via the Sky Box Sets package. They haven't got Series 7 Part 2 up yet though and I don't think they're putting it on anytime soon. It's the same on Netflix (US) they have first part of 7 but not second. Does anyone know where I could watch it when I get round to it? Apologizes again if been asked and answered loads of times already.

Probably nowhere legally right now, it will take a while for the HD to come on. I think the AMC sight might have it if you want to use a Proxy. Or easier just google "Watch Mad Men Online"

Cheers they're on AMCs website til next Tuesday....going to have to get through it quickly then I think. Hopefully it comes on Sky soon, usually they put them on quite quickly. I know it only recently just finished though so might be a few months.

Just finished season one. Not sure what took me so long or why I delayed until now - it's fantastic.

My Mum is obsessed with this, but says that she feels she's missing out on a fair chunk of what probably makes the programme so popular in that it's about real American advertising from the past. Being English, she obviously wouldn't know about famous American advertising campaigns.

They should make a British Mad Men and dramatise the makings of the "I can do it too with Kandoo" or the safestyle BOGOF adverts. Truly brilliant and pure genius.
Lol

Nah, its a character piece, the advertising becomes more of a background noise as the show goes on. I knew little about advertising beforehand and honestly don't know that much now but understood the program fully and this its the beat show ever made.

I'm currently re-watching it (just finished the Shoot episode in season 1), and I'd forgotten how many good episodes there are so early on, though that serves to explain why I was hooked so soon. I'd also forgotten how misogynistic it is right from the start and how objectified the women in the office are, when you go from season 7 to 1, you see that in those 10 years so much changed - it wasn't quite yet ideal for women and the old guard even at the end had this deep rooted idea of the housewife-woman, but there were changes in many characters in how they addressed and treated women.

Whoever said that the evolution of the place of women in the workspace wasn't really dealt with was silly, it so obviously is.

Casual racism is also addressed right from the first scene and from many little scenes here and there, though it's not the core of the show.

The acting is superb right from the start also, Betty is a really interesting character at first in her relationship with Don, and she's very well acted. Oh, and that Shoot episode, where Don and Betty are approached by Jim Hobart who then offers Betty to do some modelling for Coca Cola is an absolutely brilliant re-watch in the context of the finale. The contrast between the shoot she does for Coca Cola showing an incredibly conservative idea of a family but wearing a flowery dress and the ad right at the end of the show is great.

And the show is so well shot. The cinematography, the framings, it's all so perfect and well studied.

What a show.

I love the little nuances that are delicately placed in and then just not touched for a while. I'm on episode 5 of season 2, but nothing has been brought up referencing Betty's shaking hands - it just serves to show there is some psychological instability within her. Her character development is so intriguing. Another moment is when Don goes to watch a foreign movie during day and it's just panned in on him, in the cinema, for a good minute and a half.

Arriving at the end of season 2, and I think it's my favourite show full stop, all things considered. I think it might be even better than The Wire...

Just finished it. It's absolutely fantastic.

Re-watched 'The Suitcase' last night, what a superb episode. I'd forgotten how brilliantly consistent seasons 3 and 4 were actually, so many excellent episodes. Also, it's probably one of the shows with the best rewatch value: seeing all these episodes knowing how it unfolds is great and brings a lot to the experience. What a show.

This show really is amazing, I binge-watched the shit out of it. The dialogues are so incredibly well-written and Don Draper, let's be honest, is the kind of guy lots of men want to be. Not just because he gets women pretty easily but because he is so intelligent as well, very sharp and smart overall. I can't think of any single bad season. A few favorite scenes of my are the Carousel scene and the scene where Betty meets Glen in the car and cries and tells Glen how adult people can be evil.

On season 5 now, and there are some absolute gems in it. Far Away Places is incredible (the whole LSD scene is hilarious), At the codfish ball is great as well and ends with quite a poignant image and the whole theme of Lady Lazarus, Don being out of touch with the 60s is very well developed throughout the episode and is perfectly shown in the conclusion of the episode with Tomorrow Never Knows. This show definitely knows how to finish an episode.

Finished watching it this weekend with the wife, God it's a wonderful show. It's really much better when watched without the 1 week break and in between and when you know how everything unfolds (the hints to Coca Cola all through the show and especially in the final episodes are huge). Choice of music, cinematography, acting, writing, there's nothing about it that isn't top notch, and loads of really laugh out loud moments actually. Also, it's the show with the best women characters, the whole reflexion on the place of women in society at that time is very well done and has a very modern connotation.

I think it's my favourite show, full stop.

It is great indeed, my second favorite show after The Wire. Very mature show with excellent dialogues.

I may have to rewatch this soon. It'd probably be the only TV show of this size that would get that treatment from me, bar The Wire. Game Of Thrones too, actually.

Finally watched the last 4 episodes. Didn't really like the ending of him giving people hugs and doing meditation. I was hoping to see him tell Sally about his true past. Anyway, one of the best TV shows I've seen along with The Sopranos and The Wire

Just finished this. I enjoyed it more than The Wire, though both are a class above anything else I've watched (though I'm yet to watch The Sopranos).

As mentioned before, the use of music is brilliant throughout, I think 'Don't Think Twice it's Alright' at the end of season 1 was my favourite.

Edit: Actually, I think my favourite was probably this:

I'm on my rewatch and I was wondering when I managed to get hooked the first time around. I think it's clear now to me it was Season One Episode Six: Babylon. Probably in my top five.

Speaking of top five, what would make your guys lists?

I'd say:
1. The Suitcase
2. The Crash
3. Shut The Door, Have A Seat
4. Signal 30
5. Babylon

Honourable mentions to In Care Of and The Other Woman.
