Television Mad Men | SPOILERS

You say that but he kind of already is a dick. Cheating on his wife and just fecking off like he has done.

Oh yeah, he's definitely been a massive prick at times and is far from a good person: he's the classic male anti-hero we've seen in many series in that sense, but I think he's also often demonstrated that he's a broken person, and not a completely awful one, even if he does a lot of shite things.

I saw a theory that the final scene of the series will echo in the final season of the first ever episode: Don putting his kids to bed. Only this time, Betty won't be standing in the doorway as she was at the beginning.

To be fair, they're easy to forget: Bobby's probably have about 0.3 lines for every episode he's been in, and Gene...has he even had a line?

I kind of feel like Betty's death will be a reminder to him that he can't just keep running away forever from his own responsibilities, and the life that he's built as Don Draper. He'll probably want to run away, but I can see him coming back in the end.

Henry's probably spent more of his life living with the kids than Don, but his scene with Sally where he broke down showed that he's ultimately not their father, and will lose most of what he has when Betty's gone. Sally took on a motherly role in what was one of the most depressing scenes of the series as she tried to pretend everything was okay, but she can't raise the kids on her own. I feel like Don will have to be there for them, but yeah, next week will be interesting. Betty's demise takes it completely left-field of what I'd have expected after last week.
Yeah, totally agree on the last part.

Not saying that I think it will happen but I can see the two boys being left in the care of Henry and who's to say that Don even finds out about Betty...

Oh man, that would be an emotional scene :(

With no Joan, Roger or Peggy in that episode it kind of seems like each character other than Don has had their ending already perhaps. It was a great episode but weird that those characters were ignored unless something is in store for them in the last one.

Don's phonecall to Sally showed that he's not completely cut-off from everyone else yet, and he does have a certain closeness to her in a way that no one else has, mainly because she'll often mercilessly call him out on his bullshit. I can't see him cutting any contact with her, and if he doesn't, he'll find out about Betty.

I think she might be the one who makes him come back actually; telling him he's needed. I could even see a confession to her that he's not Don Draper, with her doing something like telling him that he now has to be. But that's all speculation.

It really would be. Would be quite a nice way to finish though, and offer some redemption for Don.

I was wondering myself what we'll see of said characters next week. You could argue that all three had decent resolutions in their latest episodes, but I dunno, I still feel like more could be in store for them, and final scenes with Don even. Certainly, I think we'll see something of Peggy since she was pretty much the female protagonist of the show. Wouldn't feel right for them to leave her story in the 3rd final episode.

I think we might see a bit of a time jump, till after Betty is dead. If that's the case, we probably would have room to see how each of the three have coped in their new lives. I expect that Peggy will be doing very well for herself, and Roger will still be fecking about, acting like a child, pissing off those at McCann, delivering timeless quips, and maybe even just walking out on the job.

My theory on Sally is that from that phone call I think that she recognised that he was 'looking for something' and was 'happy' looking for it and I think she may leave him to it knowing he'll return once he's finished.

Possibly. She does have a good understanding of him admittedly.

One line I noticed that stood out though was Don saying to the young guy stealing the money that the whole new identity thing isn't worst it in the end. Now, admittedly Don is Dick, but I wonder if that could have some potential foreshadowing as to what he does in the final episode.

That's why I thought we may not see them again. It seemed very deliberate that the story concentrated solely on Pete, Betty and Don. I don't see what else they can do with Joan but it would be a real shame if we don't see more of Roger and Peggy.

Yeah - it could've easily been a resolution, but I'd be surprised if we don't see any of them.

I'm paranoid Roger's heart will give way. All he really had was the agency.

I'd have had him down as the main character to die if any of them were going to, but I'd be surprised if they killed another one since Betty's going to die.

I'm surprised how sad Betty's diagnosis made me considering how much I've disliked her

I think I liked her a lot more because she handled it well. Remained fairly strong, and demonstrated at the end of the episode that despite their conflicts, she was genuinely proud of Sally. And even if you don't like her, it's hard not to feel sympathy for her kids.

Plus she was finally starting to do something with her life, and seemed to want to succeed against the gender constraints which have been placed against her. As soon as she does, she finds out she's going to die. Tragic.

Oh, I agree it's really tragic, just never been her biggest fan. Almost felt guilty feeling sad for her

The whole storyline just felt so tragic and harrowing in a kind of disturbing way. The resignation and acceptance; the way she told Sally what she'd want to be buried in etc.

We're only spoiler-ing speculation right? Not discussion of episodes that have aired.

Yeah, only speculation. You can discuss whatever happened this week without spoiler tags since the episode has aired.

Have to say. The ending of last weeks episode has to be one of, if not my favourite ending of a TV show ever. Loved the music choice and the scene was haunting. Brilliant!

Looking back, there's a real irony in the final scene between Glenn and Betty. With Glenn going off to war, we realise it's the last time he'll see Betty, with the assumption being that he'll die in service. Of course, that's not why it was the last time they saw each other...

Betty's dad's a bit of a drag too.
I reckon he was ok, pretty funny at times calling Clara by his own African-American maids name then asking if they knew each other when corrected.

This has been a great season. Can't wait to see what they come up with next season.
Ffs

"'She won't get married because she's never been in love.' I think I wrote that to sell nylons."

"For a lot of people love isn't just a slogan."

"When you mean love you mean a big lightning bolt to the heart, where you can't eat and you can't work, and you just run off and get married and make babies. The reason you haven't felt it is because it doesn't exist. What you call love was invented by guys like me to sell nylons."

"Is that right?"

"Pretty sure about it. You're born alone and you die alone and this world just drops a bunch of rules on top of you to make you forget those facts, but I never forget. I'm living like there's no tomorrow, because there isn't one."

"I don't think I realized it until this moment, but it must be hard being a man, too."

One of the best bits of dialogue in the show.

That was brilliant again, I'm going to miss this show.

Henry telling Sally it's ok to cry, and then breaking down into tears as she comforts him was classic, dark Mad Men humour, I couldn't help but burst out laughing at first.

I like to think Mad Men will end with Pete saying to Don "Hey Draper, advertise this!", then socking him in the mouth before jumping onto a vintage Triumph with Peggy and riding off into the California sunset. Roger kneels by Don and says "there goes the greatest Ad Men I've ever seen" and Don replies proudly "no... the greatest Mad Men".

Fade to black.

This was my theory a year ago. I stand by it.
